I think its quite new for royals wearing the miniature for a black tie dinner or during daytime, i cant remember seeing Queen Elizabeth II with an miniature order at a daytime event in Germany or France.. Queen Maxima for example choose the France and German miniature order for every event, a bit to much IMO.

The miniature (a bâton) is for day events, the miniature medal is for evening events (black tie). It actually shows respect to the hosts to use these.

Here you see an example: the bâton of the Ordre National du Mérite (daywear).
