Solliden Palace launched its new website a couple of days ago.
Välkommen till Sollidens Slott på Öland

”Welcome to the beautiful park of Solliden with its luxuriant trees, shrubs and flowers. Solliden is a part of our cultural heritage, which is of special concern to me. It was built by my great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, and was completed in 1906.
When my great-grandfather, Gustav V, died in 1950, I inherited the palace. It is my intention to preserve Solliden, so that future generations will be able to enjoy its unique and glorious gardens.”
– Carl Gustaf –

The exhibition of the year
This year's exhibition at Solliden will be about H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf's life here at Solliden, from childhood to today. We will display both public and private images.

Themed Gardens competition
Themed Gardens 2020 - Balcony: Theme Hemester
For the sixth year in a row, we are organizing a Themed Gardens competition in Solliden Palace Park, on Gustaf V croquet floor. The idea is to give the Palace park a new dimension and a contemporary element as well as give visitors inspiration and new ideas. This year too, it will be about balconies, this time with the theme HEMESTER, ie. the new word for vacationing at home. Participants are free to interpret the theme.

Solliden's operations manager Carolina Thaysen has good news, Solliden will be open during the summer.
- Yes, we will be open! We open the Palace park for visits on May 20, and our Kaffetorpet (Cottage Cafe) will open in June, she tells Svensk Damtidning.
- We are an outdoor visit destination and everyone will be able to keep good distances to each other. And at Cottage Cafe we will slip between the tables, and table service of course.
- Then of course we follow the recommendations of the authorities very, very carefully. And should there be any other directives, we will take a new position, and take any action based on it, says Carolina Thaysen
She also offers another news: This year's exhibition in the Solliden Pavilion focuses on the king and his 70 years on Solliden. After all, he was only four years old when he became the lord of the palace.
- It is a photo exhibition and I can already promise private pictures that have never been shown before! says Carolina Thaysen.

When Gustav V inherited Solliden from his wife Victoria, he became very involved in the development of the park. He, for example, let to open the park for visitors. Here he is seen together with his personal physician Axel Munthe who also spent a lot of time here at Solliden.

Swedish Press Agency SPA publishes at its Facebook today photos of Solliden, which they have taken last week.
"New exclusive Pictures from the Royal Greenhouses at Solliden Palace on Öland. SPA was there last week to take some new shoots. Here the royal family grow flowers and vegetables which are then planted out in the palace park. The royal family is almost self-sufficient on vegetables during their stay at Solliden during the summer. There are cucumbers, tomatoes, several types of chili and lots of other things."

When the King's summer Palace Solliden finally opens its doors on Wednesday, it will be without the Lord of the Palace - for the first time in several years. According to Margareta Thorgren, the king follows the recommendations of the Public Health Agency and stays at Stenhammar.
But he probably does it with sadness in his heart. That traditions are broken is always deplorable to the king, and to Crown Princess Victoria.
But now they have seen one tradition after another being cancelled: the King's birthday celebration, Victoria's name day, National Day. Yes, even Victoria Day. And so the latest setback concerns Solliden.
There everything was ready for a real success season. The king has paid a new website at his summer Palace and this year's mild island winter has been extra nice to the flowers in the royal family's large gardens.
- We are an outdoor visit destination and everyone will be able to keep good distances to each other. Of course, we follow the recommendations of the authorities very, very carefully, says Solliden Operations Manager Carolina Thaysen.
All islanders - and those on the mainland who live close enough - can therefore enjoy the spring flowers around the Palace. And to see new unique pictures of the king!
- This year's exhibition at the Solliden Pavilion is about the King's 70 years as the Lord of the Palace and I can promise private pictures that have never been shown before, says Carolina Thaysen.
The plan is also to open the King's own nice summer café Kaffetorpet, which is just outside the Palace gates, in June.

Is Villa Skönvik privately owned by the Bernadottes?

It is at the Solliden Palace area, which the king owns, it is his private property. The swedish press has written, that Victoria and Daniel paid the building of Villa Skönvik.

Is Villa Skönvik privately owned by the Bernadottes?
Yes, the whole Sofiero estate was willed to King Carl Gustav by his great-grandfather King Gustav V who in turn had inherited it from his wife Queen Victoria

I guess Gustav V decided to make sure it went directly from him to Carl Gustaf to avoid double taxes - as at that point Carl Gustaf was only 4 years old (but it was clear he would be his grandfather's heir)?

So, will it go to Estelle (or even her firstborn) next?

Perhaps Gustav V willed Solliden to Carl Gustaf, because his son Gustaf (VI) Adolf already had Sofiero, which he and crown princess Margareta had got as a wedding gift from king Oscar II in 1905. After Margareta's death Gustaf VI Adolf remained true to Sofiero and spent his summers there until his death in 1973. On his death, Sofiero was bequeathed to the city of Helsingborg.

Although members of the Royal family had some inheritance tax privileges at the time of the death of Gustav V I'm sure that was one of the reasons behind him leaving Sofiero to Carl Gustav. Maybe it had been the intention of Gustav and Victoria to leave it to Gustaf Adolf. Another reason might have been that he was very close to Princess Sibylla who held his hand when he passed away. She was given the use of the property until her son reached maturity.

There was "Solliden meets Italy" theme days yesterday and today in Solliden.

Svensk Damtidning has an article about Solliden at its latest issue.
"Solliden is our paradise in the summer and our dream in the winter", the king usually says.
"The king has a very healthy view of how the palace should be preserved, he is keen to keep the simplicity from Queen Victoria's days", palace governor Leo Eriksson has previously told.
This is a big estate, and here is one of the few times you can see Queen Silvia driving a car. Inside the high iron gates at Solliden Palace there is relaxation and joy for everyone in the royal family. The king is allowed to drive his tractor and dig in the garden, the queen can work in her perennial flowerbed, Estelle can take long rides with mother Victoria or aunt Madeleine. Prince Oscar is happy with his football while prince Daniel runs on Alvaret in the afternoons. A dream world for a royal family that rarely gets their own time together.

Flowerbed 2021
Flowerbed of the future by Jan Rundgren
The Garden Flowerbed is a collaboration with garden designer Jan Rundgren and Elmia Gardens and it was created based on Elmia Garden Trends which tells us how a really trendy flowerbed should look like in 2021. Jan Rundgren made three different proposals based on the trends. These proposals were presented to the King and Queen who then chose the proposal based on the trend "Flowers & Crafts" here to Solliden.

A dream world for a royal family that rarely gets their own time together.

In my perspective the royal family seems to spend quite a lot of time together - especially compared to other families. I know very few families where three generations would yearly spend (several?) weeks of vacation together next to seeing each other once in while either for work or other private activities.

Or is it common for Scandinavian families to do so? And do the royals truly spend a lot less time with each other than the average family would do?

Just my opinion, but I think they spend more as they both love and trust them, even better they can relax and totally be themselves.

Friends and staff can often be indiscreet or just plain greedy.

The Royal family do spend a lot of time away from their children on long trips both domestically and abroad and have several nights a week when they're not at home for bedtime. This is something that both Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Madeleine & their parents have spoken about as putting much emotional strain on the family and all of them have mentioned how it affected Madeleine in particular.
Naturally many others spend a lot of nights and weekends away from their families working. Especially those in healthcare that often work every second weekends and have early mornings and late nights. I'm sure they'd like the opportunity to spend a few weeks together as a family each year.
