Dubawi scores emotional win

Reuters

Ireland:

Dubawi, a son of the late and much lamented Dubai Millennium, gave Dubai's Godolphin stable an emotional victory yesterday in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

In a battle of Europe's top two racing stables, Dubawi ran out an effortless two length winner from home hope Oratorio. Democratic Deficit finished in third, six lengths further back in the eight-strong field.

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, and the inspiration behind the Godolphin team, was clearly moved in the paddock to see the much touted son of Dubai Millennium show his real class.

"God took him but gave us his progeny," Shaikh Mohammad told reporters after a jubilant Frankie Dettori leapt off Dubawi in his traditional flying dismount.

"Of course it was a great day because of Dubai Millennium and how he went. You can see his father's face in Dubawi's eyes," Shaikh Mohammad added.

Dubai Millennium succumbed to grass sickness and died in his first year at stud in 2001 after a racing career of nine wins out of 10, including the 2000 Dubai World Cup. Asked if yesterday's victory was one of the sweetest moments ever for his Godolphin racing empire, Shaikh Mohammad replied: "Yes, definitely. This is history."

Dubawi, never at ease on the fast ground when a disappointing fifth in the English 2,000 Guineas last month, was much happier on the easier surface at The Curragh, headquarters of Irish racing.

Amazing acceleration

"When I pressed the button, the acceleration was amazing. He is fantastic," said the Italian, inevitably remembering his great victories on the majestic Dubai Millennium.

Dubawi was immediately cut from 12-1 to 4-1 second favourite for the Epsom Derby on June 4 but Shaikh Mohammad would not be rushed into making a decision on whether to run him.

"I think he'll get a mile and a quarter and sometimes mile-and-a-quarter horses win the Derby," he said.

Asked what went wrong at Newmarket when Dubawi failed behind the O'Brien winner Footstepsinthesand, Shaikh Mohammad said: "He's just like us flesh and blood. Anything can go wrong. This, today, was the real Dubawi."

Mohammad orders work on housing project to begin

WAM
Published: 23/5/2005, 08:03 (UAE)

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Minister of Defence, has instructed work to begin on a housing project for UAE nationals in Dubai on a fast-track basis. Shaikh Mohammad's orders were made while he was reviewing the project's master plan yesterday.

The project, part of the Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Housing Programme, involves construction of 10,000 housing units in selected areas in Dubai at a cost of Dh10 billion.

The areas selected for the construction of the buildings are Al Warqaa 4 (523 plots); Oud Al Mateena (942 plots) and Jebel Ali (5,500-7,000 plots).

Khalfan Hareb, Director of the Dubai Ruler's Court, said Shaikh Mohammad issued his directives to build housing units that conform with the economic and social requirements of citizens.

"According to Shaikh Mohammad's directives, the project will include houses reflecting the UAE's Islamic and Arabic identity, mos-ques, social and cultural centres and entertainment facilities," Hareb said.

He said applications will be received from UAE nationals from June 4 at the main office of Emaar Properties on Shaikh Zayed Road.

Emaar's shares shot up on the Dubai Financial Market yesterday in heavy trading activity worth more than Dh600 million.

Police suspect arson at Darley’s Church Hall Farm near Newmarket

A fire this week that caused significant damage at Darley’s Church Hall Farm, a satellite farm of Dalham Hall Stud, near Newmarket, is being investigated as a case of suspected arson.

Racing Post reports that three separate fires broke out at Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Church Hall Farm, which is used primarily for mares and foals. No people or horses were injured as quick-thinking staff led group-winning mare Papering and her Singspiel (Ire) foal to safety moments before flames engulfed a large hay shed. Two other buildings also were severely damaged.

More than 50 firefighters from Newmarket and surrounding towns fought the blaze. "We were very lucky that nobody and no horses were injured," Darley Stud Manager Liam O’Rourke told Racing Post. "The blaze was very promptly attended to by alert staff, as well as local brigades, who brought it under control swiftly, so we were fortunate."

Mohammed’s horse claims award
From A Correspondent

23 May 2005

QUEENSLAND — An Australian based endurance horse owned by General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence, scooped the coveted award for Best Condition in the 160-km 3-Star FEI ride at Gatton in Queensland recently.

His eight-year old Arabian gelding, Jordanvale Red Cloud, ridden by Kristie McGaffin, a member of the Australian slver medal team, narrowly missed winning the ride by a mere nose.

The crews and spectators saw two riders emerge out of the darkness holding hands as they rode the last few metres. In true racing fashion the grey mare China Doll stuck her nose out as she crossed the finish line to claim first place for her rider and owner Meg Wade.

This leading duo are both trained by Wade and rode the 160 km together. With temperatures just above freezing, 41 riders lined up at the start of the 1 ride at 5am in the morning.

In customary fashion, Howard Harris, riding Harmere Turfan, went to the front over the opening 40km but he had a bunch of riders on his tail which included Wade and McGaffin.

By the end of the second leg of 33-km, Harris had built up a ten minute lead but shared it with Bill Ward on Flashing Ra who was vetted out lame after the next stage of 34-km.

Over the fourth leg of 24-km, Harris lost his advantage and was one of five riders travelling at the front, he went on to finish fourth. A quick presentation by the wining duo gave them the advantage at the start of the penultimate leg of 17-km which they maintained and started the final stage of 12-km with six minutes in hand over Robert Sutton on Zenith Park Quigley.

But Sutton’s horse was full of running over this final stage finishing four minutes behind the winners. It could have been a closer call as Wade admitted after the finish. ”We thought it was impossible for Robert to make up six minutes over 12-km but we got quite a shock when we saw the light of his helmet closing on us, so we pushed really hard then.” Just 15 riders completed, many of whom rode in the dark for a considerable time. The last home was the Japanese rider Yuko Hori in a ride time of 15.06.34 compared to the Wade and McGaffin time 9.39.00.

The 90-km FEI 2-star ride attracted a massive entry of 91 who left at 10 am just as the temperature was creeping up to the high twenties. The winner was New Zealander David Marshall, ex assistant trainer at the Royal Stables Abu Dhabi. Marshall took the ride wire to wire in a ride time of 5.34 on the Arabian gelding Brasch. Amongst the other 57 riders who finished was another New Zealander Trevor Copeland, 29th on Sergi owned by Shaikh Fiasal bin Saqr Al Qasimi. The last rider to finish was Joy McLean on Fernside Chenoah Tatanya in a ride time of 10.38.49, almost double the time of the winner.

Brasch owned and trained by Sue Crockett won the award for Best Condition.

At the prize giving, attended by the Mayor of Gatton, gratitude was extended to FEI Rides sponsor Gheerulla Stable
