Well, all went well. Of course it did, QEII is thoroughly professional and the best trump-card any British government has.

And all according to the protocol. A working visit by a foreign head of state = A cup of tea with QEII - and a parade a an extra courtesy in this case. So no British snub there. Even though some demonstrators pointed out that Trump "only" got a cup of tea, while Obama got a dinner. - Yes, but that was a state visit.

When Presidents Trump and Putin meet in Helsinki they will also drop in at the Finnish President - for a cup of coffee perhaps.
Can't remember off hand whether the Finnish President has executive powers though.

For one, a curtsy is never an obligation. Secondly, Melania Trump is an American citizen and not required to bow or curtsy to any foreign head of state or monarch. I didn't expect her to and she didn't. :D

President Sauli Niinistö hosts the meeting of presidents Trump and Putin. President Niinistö has also a bilateral meeting with president Trump, president Trump asked for a bilateral meeting. President Niinistö will also have a bilateral meeting with president Putin.
American and Russian presidents to meet at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki - The President of the Republic of Finland

May I ask why Mrs Trump didnt have to curtsey?

She doesn't have to curtsy if she doesn't want to. As the First Lady of the United States, it would probably be politically embarassing to the president if she curtsied to the Queen.

Heads of States and their spouses doesn't bow or curtsy to each other.

I agree, Melania does not need to curtsy. As regards "politically embarrassing" events, I guess we are increasingly getting used to them ?

My apologies to QEII and to the British behavior for his boorish behavior and rudely walking in front of a reigning monarch (or any 91 year old, for that matter!).

As for Melanie curtsying to the Queen … not only doesn't the spouse of the president need to curtsy, but no American (Meghan being the exception) should curtsy to any monarch.

I wasn’t surprised that the DoE wasn’t there, but I expected that another senior royal might have been invited to ‘escort’ Melania- don’t know who the well-dressed gentleman who eventually walked alongside her was. The

He really didn't know what to do. You could see him abruptly stop when he realized the Queen hadn't come around the side he expected. Kinda funny. (Monty Python could do a hilarious skit on this). He may have been briefed but he just didn't recall (not unusual for him).

I did notice the Queen do something interesting: she placed Trump in the middle on the dais, so that when she leaned over to say something to Trump she was able to include Melania in her glance. Subtle but I think that's what she was doing so she wasn't always turning her back on Melania, plus she gave Trump pride-of-place: two birds with one stone.

All in all, a discreet little ceremony to please.

I did feel for the Queen having to stand so much and walk for so long on knees that hurt.

The man with Melania is Lieutenant Colonel Sir Andrew Ford, the Comptroller of the Lord Chamberlain's office.
I was a little surprised no other royal attended, I could understand if the President had come alone but knowing the First Lady was going to be there I'm surprised no one stood in to be "second". In fairness I guess as the main part was tea behind closed doors maybe there didn't seem much point.

It doesn't take rocket science to see that President Trump was kind of at a loss of what to do when inspecting the Coldstream Guards. There were a few times that the Queen was directing him on what to do. Everything and anything that did happen, the Queen took in stride with ease. Some reports are stating that Trump stopped abruptly and the Queen had to go around him. Even with the seen bloopers, you have to realize that it wasn't intentional disrespect towards HM but rather an old pro and a tenderfoot doing something together. :D

You know you're watching someone very adept at these kind of things when you see the Queen standing there and waiting for the arrival but also can see the ease of the conversations she was having on the dais with the two military personnel that joined her. HM most certainly lived up to President Trump's description of her as an "incredible woman".

I've never seen such awkward situation between the Queen and a US President.

Y'know, I actually timed the length of the ceremony outside at the dais from the arrival until they retired into the castle for tea. I may be off by a minute or two but it took no longer than 15 minutes. Very short and sweet and over and done with and they moved on. From what I understand, the tea was to last no longer than 25 minutes. So just about everything was done in about the span of an hour.

According to news I just read:
President Trump was ten minutes late.

The tea, i.e. the scheduled time for small talk and tea with QEII was set at 30 minutes, but lasted around 45 minutes.

Thank Heaven that is 'done and dusted', without incident...

He stopped abruptly when he realized she was neither to his right nor left. You can see him trying to figure out where she is. (It's really funny on a certain level. He's so big, she's so tiny by comparison). She hadn't made the corner with him like two horses in tandem. ;) She was chatting a lot, unclear with whom. I've seen her do this before, at Westminster Abbey in the last week or so (chatting and moving back-and-forth in place). Initially she places herself on the side near the guards, and then scoots behind Trump to the other side, leaving a big gap that Trump never closes. I thought the whole was funny.

Someone compared The Queen having to explain things to him as she'd have to train her corgis. Obviously a joke, but he did seem quite out of place and lacked basic manners as to what to do. Given the number of people he brought, I'm surprised no one went over basic things with him before this. I'm also quite baffled by the tardiness.

He was late to Blenheim Palace, too, not so?

baffled by the tardiness.

I understand he kept Prime Minister May waiting too..it seems to be a habit..

We obviously need to put a bell on him. He also needed to slow down to her pace.

I love the part where she was just chattering away at him as they reviewed the troops. He interrupts everyone, so it actually says something about how he saw the visit that he did not break in with Trumpian play-by-play and shut her up.

I'll be so glad when this visit is over.

And keeping the other party waiting is a negotiating ploy that supposedly sends the message that the on time person is of lower stature than the person who is late. Cheap, childish one-ups-man-ship.

Here is the thing. Let's not even consider the fact that she's the Queen. She's a 92 year old woman who is his host, how does he not have enough respect to let her take the lead? If he doesn't know what to do, just don't do anything.

Yup

It's definitely a habit. Not only in UK either. I continuously to be baffled by it every time. Quite disrespectful to others' time.
Tardiness is a true pet peeve of mine.

IMO its a sign of disrespect...not respectful of anyone's time.

Doesn't matter if you are President, Queen, cashier at the local McDonalds, etc.

Oh well....it went as well as to be expected. I guess we will really know the details when/if he tweets about it right?

He actually has existed as 'royalty' in his own little bubble. All revolves around him, on his timetable. So not unexpected though puzzling as how would he be able to impact a motorcade's timing through streets?

Noteworthy that both at Blenheim and Windsor there were no public crowds. Every ceremony was well insulated from the public. They were taking no chances. They made it all 'look good' for a camera, but clearly theatre.

He wasn’t actually, he was due at 5pm and pulled into the quadrangle at 4:59pm. The afternoon tea also over-ran by 17 minutes. Whilst I truly hate the man, he did arrive on time. Whether he was late to Chequers I am unaware.

The Queen is 92. I believe other Presidents/First Ladys have bowed/curtseyed even if a small indication of respect. Someone tweeted about it earlier.

I get how average people can run late occasionally, but how does a Head of State, with aides to help with everything and motorcade that doesn't have to deal with traffic, continuously be late?:bang:
