The court has translated its announcement about the military elements of the festivities into English.

https://www.kongehuset.dk/en/news/the-defences-role-in-connection-with-the-succession-of-the-throne

When HM The Queen and the future King and Queen are driven through Copenhagen by coach in connection with the succession of the throne on Sunday, 14 January 2024, it will, in keeping with tradition, be done with an escort by the Guard Hussar Regiment’s Mounted Squadron. Along the route, the Defence will also be present and visible with flag formations and honour commands, just as The Royal Life Guard will be attired in the red gala uniform at both Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palace.

[...]

When the coach rounds the bend at Holmens Canal, an honour command consisting of 18 service personnel from each of the three services (The Army, The Navy and The Air Force) and a flag formation with the Defence’s royally consecrated flags and standards will be set up. In extension of this, honour commands and royally consecrated flags from the Home Guard and the Danish Emergency Management Agency will be set up.

[...]

At Christiansborg Palace, a King’s Watch from The Royal Life Guard will be formed to meet the royals upon arrival and departure.

[...]

Before the proclamation, an honour command will be posted by The King’s Gate at Christiansborg Palace Square. The honour command will be positioned centrally under the balcony and consist of 48 guards, 16 drummers, a flag lieutenant and a flag bearer as well as The Royal Life Guard’s royally consecrated regimental flag.

Firing of salute

Immediately following the proclamation of HM King Frederik X, a salute will be fired from the Sixtus Battery. The Navy’s Military Police Guard will be in charge of firing the cannons located on Holmen in Copenhagen.

The salute of joy consists of 3 x 27 shots, which are fired at 5-6 second intervals. There is a tradition that 27 shots are fired for the monarch. Historically, in Danish warfare, three shots known as a “dansk løsen” have been fired to indicate the position of the Danish units. The salute has its roots in this “dansk løsen”, so there is a tradition that it can be divided into three parts.

[...]

Fact about red guard gala

The Royal Life Guard’s red gala uniform is worn only for specific occasions, including 1 January, the sovereign’s birthday, state visits and special celebrations in The Royal House of Denmark. The red gala uniform will also be worn on 15 January 2024, when the King’s Watch carries out the changing of the guard towards Frederik VIII’s Palace for the first time since January 1972.

The court has also translated its explainer about the royal jewels into English:

Danish Crown Jewels

:flowers:

Dansk Løsen is an archaic expression and it simply means an ID signal. Be it vokal or as in this case a salute.
Three shots were fired by Danish ships to ID them. When the king was around it as nine shots. In the same way that it is always nine cheers for Denmark at QMII's birthdays, and come May Frederik's B-day.
And when it's a really big event, like tomorrow it's 3x9 shots = 27 in total.

Will it be broadcasted in Germany perhaps? I could not find anything in the programing of the ARD (sports) and the WDR.

ARD (Das Erste) will broadcast from 14:05 CET.

DR.dk might stream it non-geoblocked though. They seem to switch their geoblocking on and off according to the program that is currently on. I can usually watch their royal coverage.

A great read on the DRF and Greenland
https://polarjournal.ch/en/2024/01/...-in-greenland-but-the-new-king-will-be-loved/

"The Queen was respected in Greenland, but the new king will be loved"
"Despite increasing criticism of Denmark, the royal family has secured a special place in Greenlandic hearts through their understanding of differences. On Sunday January 14th Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will leave the throne to her son, Frederik, who is even more popular in Greenland"
"Since the annoucement my Facebook has been flooded by people posting their own photos, standing arm in arm with Frederik. He really is a man of the people, and as the king, he will be loved in Greenland"

BT has compiled a number of anecdotes of chance encounters between ordinary people and QMII.
Most of them are from the 70's back when DK was much more innocent and provincial (= no one came and nothing happened.)
https://www.bt.dk/royale/ups-gav-dronning-margrethe-en-mavepuster
https://www.bt.dk/royale/turister-tabte-underkaeben-da-dronningen-uventet-dukkede-op-i-butik

A Mir tells about his/her mother who came to DK as a political refugee (judging from the name Eastern Europe.)
After work the mother sometimes went into a somewhat posh (back then) department store. Here she leaned forward to study something in a montre and turned around headbutting QMII in her belly. The mother was only 1.59 and QMII is 1.82.
That didn't bother QMII. The mother was always proud that she lived in a country where the head of state could walk around without being surrounded by security.

----

And Ole tells about how he back in 1977 went into watch comedy, The Olsen Gang (for Scandinavian and German members).
The then 25 year old Ole sat next to a lady who had a good laugh (QMII is very fond of the quirky humor in the Olsen Gang series) and when the light went on he discovered he sat right next to QMII.

-----------

A Benedicte worked in a high class glassware store in Copenhagen in the early 70s where she was helping a couple of American tourists, when suddenly QMII went in only accompanied by one security guard.
The tourists, with their jaws dangling between their knees, whispered: "Is that the Queen?"

--------

A Janes mor, tells about her mother who gave QMII a cigarette outside a church in Copenhagen, because QMII had forgot her bag.

------

A Morten was a first-year apprentice in the beforementioned department store, when the then Hear QMII and CP Sonja to look at a pen for toddlers. An older retail worked asked whether she should take over. QMII responded: "No thank you, we are pleased with this young lady here." - That was a boost for the self-confidence!

-----------

A Lene tells about her father who was a little late in attending a service in a not particular crowded church in Aarhus. He sat on the front row but had forgotten his book of psalms. An elderly lady sitting next to him shared her book with him. Only to discover it's QMII.

-----------

The former PM, Helle Thorning reveals that QMII master almost all dialects in DK. (And you'd be surprised how many and how different they are!)

-----------

A Henrik worked for many years in a photo store in CPH (Copenhagen) and had previously served QMII and Joachim. One day Frederik came in alone with a camera that needed a repair. When asked what he should write, Frederik smiled: "Just write Rex."

-------------

A Snap remember QMII from the early 90s when he was 17. He saw QMII wearing rubber boots/wellies in an archeological dig that took place at the square outside the Cathedral. (Aarhus was founded in the 800s, and that area is among the oldest parts of the city.) She was totally absorbed!
Snap though she was a cool queen.

-----------

An Aase Dunker attended a service in the Danish Church in London during the Olympics in 2012. Present were also QMII and Benedikte.
At the alter Aase kneeled beside QMII and Benedikte thinking: "When I was kneeling next to the Queen of Denmark, I felt we were equal before God. When we rose up I was again the Queen's subject."

The government will increase the apanage for the DRF as a whole.
Partly because QMII will retain a court befitting of her status. She will not be retiring into a meager life.

At the same time the government envision a different role for M&F, when they become the regent couple.

Were these plans (increase in apanage and change to role of monarch) announced by the government, or reported in the press? In either case, would you or someone else share the link to the source? :flowers:

Yes, that was Minister for Finance, Nikolai Wammen. A very senior minister and at some point in the not too distant future very possibly a prime minister.
He spoke to Ritzau news agency and that has been widely quoted by the press.

The key words in his statement was increase funds to the DRF, including the state taking over more responsibility for the upkeep of the palaces. And increase in the overall apanage and development and added responsibility for the new regent couple.

It was among other places quoted here:

I’m sure this has been asked before but will all of this be broadcast in the US? If not what’s the best online stream to watch?

Thanks.

Fred and Mary are good for the economy, it's an investment that pays itself off in no time and absolutely less expensive and more stable than the opposing forms of government. They will be the First Family now and deserve a raise.

Thanks.

I'll be checking YouTube first to find one channel with an English translation. I believe there's a German online English language channel we used to see the coverage of Charles coronation when the UK and USA channel hosts became too messy talking over the transmission.

I'm able to see DR's coverage right now (8:45 PM Eastern U.S./2:45 AM Denmark) in the United States. I don't know whether it will keep streaming throughout the day tomorrow, but here's the link: https://www.dr.dk/drtv/kanal/192099

:previous: Oh yes, balmy.

That's good news. That means clear and good photos and a big crowd. You can always dress for the cold, but snow or rain has a tendency to ruin things.

So excited for you Danes..I can't wait to tune in!?

In the week leading up to the Danish throne change, DR has met both Crown Princess Victoria and Crown Prince Haakon for an interview, where they lavishly pay tribute to Queen Margrethe and her long period as regent. The interviews are from the program 'Frederik X - konge af Danmark'.
For Sveriges Victoria og Norges Haakon har dronningen været 'et stærkt forbillede' _ Indland _ DR

King Carl Gustaf's message to Queen Margrethe:
"When you step down today from Your high office as Queen of Denmark, I want to express my warm thanks for the good cooperation over the years. You now enter a changed role, but the friendship between us remains – heartfelt and constant.”
From H.M. The King's Telegram to H.M. Queen Margrethe on Her Majesty's Abdication Day.

Is there a list of the mottoes chosen by past monarchs, in order that we could compare Frederik's choice?

Queen Margrethe II's motto is “Guds hjælp, Folkets kærlighed, Danmarks styrke” (God's help, the people's love, Denmark's strength).

Thank you! I personally don't perceive a suggestion in the Minister's comments that the role of the monarch will change; his comment "so that our royal house with the new kingly couple can continue to develop and be active for Denmark" suggests continuity of activities to me.

it may be a language thing, but to me there is no question in the Minister's statements that M&F are going to travel a lot more and do a lot more work for Danish commerce and that the DRF will become a lot more digitized.

Is it also for you impossible to reach kongehuset.dk? The website shows me "the service is unavailable".

Overload it seems. - It'll be back on later.

Broadcast in the U.S.? Why? If it was Charles III abdicating, that might be aired here, only because of the relationship between the U.S. and the UK, but I can guarantee you, outside of the American members of this site, no one here cares that the Danish queen is abdicating today. Your best bet is to watch a stream online.

Would she. I think it was mentioned at the time that after her abdication she is constitutionally dead so to speak. and what when the Monarch is ill for a longer period of time like it was in Denmark last spring?.
