Thanks for the pictures, is always good to see them. Somehow I feel connected to them they are like MY ROYAL FAMILY and I wish more people here (in Brazil) pay attention to the imperial family.

But they ARE our Imperial Family (the Republic doesn't really matter ).

I've known the Imperial Family since always, as my parents are long time monarchists. One of the Princes is my godfather.

I worked during the campaign for the 1993 referendum and I even remember Prince Rafael and his siblings when they were just kids. (You can guess I'm really old ).

About the coxinhas, I have a biography about Empress Teresa Cristina that says Her Imperial Majesty invented it.

What a shame that Dom Pedro Alcântara Henrique had to renounce to marry his noble lady. These days old-fashioned European monarchists like me would jump in the air when a Prince would come home with a lady and an illustrious ancestry like that... On his turn however, Dom Gabriel seem to have married a "commoner" Luciana Guaspari, so on his turn he would probably have lost his place in the line of succession anyway...


Is there more news about the "relationship" of Dom Rafael with Talita Vaccaro? I see that Talita is often pictured with others, not only with Dom Rafael. With Filippo Renner, with Bernardo Sued, with Felipe Guga, with Paulinho Freire, with Diógenes Queiroz and yes... with Dom Rafael de Orléans e Bragança e Ligne but all these pictures are made in a party-setting. I wonder how serious we have to take these rumours? It looks "a Chelsy Davy / Cressida Bonas"-sort of story to me.

All the five brothers who renounced their rights - Princes Eudes, Pedro de Alcantara, Fernando, Francisco and Alberto - married ladies from the Brazilian Aristocracy. One of the sisters, Princess Maria Gabriela, married a Brazilian nobleman, while her twin, Princess Maria Thereza, married a Dutch nobleman, Johannes Hessel de Jong.

As father, the late Prince Pedro Henrique approved the marriages of all his sons and even regarded his daughters-in-law as his own daughters. But, as Head of the Imperial House of Brazil, he believed he had to maintain the standards established by his ancestors.

The lady is six years older but would HSH Princess Elisabeth Margarete Maria Anna Beatriz von Thurn und Taxis be a good candidate? She is very catholic (she wrote for the British Catholic Herald and for the English edition of L'Osservatore Romano, she petitioned for the return of the Tridentine Mass, she is a Lady of the Order of Malta and has repeatedly volunteered for pilgrimages to Lourdes. She wrote a book about Catholic aspects like devotion to Saints, the receiving of the Holy Communion on the tongue, the existence of Purgatory and the way a Rosary should be prayed...). Despite her conservative ('typically Bayern') worldview she looks quite modern and trendy.

If he loves her and she's a Catholic Princess, why not? I'd love to see him marry one of the daughters of Prince Nikolaus and Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein, although they are second cousins.

But I just hope he finds the right girl and that they'll have a solid and beautiful marriage, like his parents.

There is no plain 'de Jong' noble family in the Netherlands and Mr. de Jong is not a nobleman. There is one noble 'de Jong' family with two branches, that are 'Josselin de Jong' and 'de Jong van Beek en Donk'. Both branches became Jonkheer -untitled nobility. There is a patriciate family with the name 'De Jong' but 'De Jong' is one of the most wide spread last names of the country so I do not know if that is the same family as of the husband of the princess. It is likely that the patriciate 'de Jong' family is an old side branch from the mentioned Josselin de Jong/ de Jong van Beek en Donk family.

His great grandfather was Cornelis Johannes de Jong. Mr. de Jong is considered 'the second founder' of Douwe Egberts coffee company. The company has grown into the largest coffee blender of the country. The family is still partly involved with the company AFAIK.

And she is a socialite with a dubious sense of humour. I always heard he was from the Dutch untitled nobility. I even remember that, by the time of his wedding with Princess Maria Thereza, people saying he was a nobleman.

The monarchists here even call him Fidalgo Johannes Hessel de Jong, which I guess is interchangeable with Jonkheer.

Prince Francisco of Orleans-Braganza celebrated his 60th birthday on April 6. His long time friend, Omar "Catito" Resende Peres, gave a party on his honor, on April 11.

The party was held on Omar's farm, in Rio das Flores. Prince Francisco was accompanied by his partner, Valeska Silveira, and two of his daughters, Princesses Maria Elisabeth and Maria Thereza of Orleans-Braganza, from his first marriage, to Claudia Regina Martins Godinho (the other daughter, Princess Maria Eleonora, Princess Maria Thereza's twin, is currently living and working in London).

Eight of Prince Francisco's eleven brothers and sisters were present: Prince Antonio of Brazil and his wife, Princess Christine (née Princess of Ligne); Princess Isabel of Brazil; the Princess (née Princess Eleonora of Brazil) and Prince of Ligne, who came all the way from Belgium; Prince Eudes of Orleans-Braganza and his wife, Mercedes; Prince Pedro de Alcantara of Orleans-Braganza and his wife, Princess Maria de Fátima; Prince Fernando of Orleans-Braganza and his wife, Princess Maria da Graça; Prince Alberto of Orleans-Braganza and his wife, Princess Maritza; and Princess Maria Gabriela of Orleans-Braganza and her partner, João Marcos Pilli.

The siblings who were unable to attend were Prince Luiz, Head of the Imperial House of Brazil, who doesn't travel anymore, on medical recomendation; Prince Bertrand, the Prince Imperial of Brazil, who was in Rio de Janeiro doing a series of engagements; and Princess Maria Thereza, Mrs. de Jong, who lives in Belgium.

The dishes served on the dinner were taken directly from recepie book used at the Brazilian Court during the 19th century, while the cake was topped by a replica, made of chocolate, of the crown of Emperor Pedro II (Prince Francisco's great-great-grandfather).

I think they're not divorced, just separated. Prince Francisco lives openly with Valeska, while Princess Claudia (who never ceased to use her princely title) also lives openly with partner, Alvaro Carrilho.

Yes, the Imperial Family lives in Brazil. They were exiled in Europe, after the coup d'etat that established the Republic, but were able to return in 1945.

Most Brazilians know about the Imperial Family, they know their are nice people and very humble, an interesting link to Brazil's Imperial past. But, for almost a century, it was illegal to be an openly monarchist in Brazil.

There was an referendum in 1993, but it was a joke. After a century of persecution, the monarchist had only a few months to campaign. The republicans invented an awful lot of lies and the Head of the Imperial House and his immediate heirs were forbidden to appear on television. In the end Monarchy received 13% of the vote. A moral victory, I'd say.

Nowadays, there's no official numbers, but I'd risk say there are around 15-20% monarchist among the Brazilian population. Not that the number of republican are much bigger. The majority just prefers to status quo.

The Head of the Imperial House of Brazil and heir to the Brazilian Throne is Prince Luiz, who is 76 years old, unmarried and childless.

His heir presumptive is his younger brother, Prince Bertrand, who uses the title of Prince Imperial of Brazil. Prince Bertrand, who's 74, is also unmarried and childless.

So the next in line to the Throne is their younger brother, Prince Antonio, who is 64 and is married to the forme Princess Christine of Ligne, a Belgian noblewoman.

Prince Antonio's eldest son, Prince Pedro Luiz, was killed in a plane crash over the Atlantic, in 2009. His younger brother, 29 years old Prince Rafael, is now the direct heir of his father and uncles.

Prince Antonio and Princess Christine also have two daughters, Princesses Amélia and Maria Gabriela.

Count Louis-Bernhard of Stolberg has made his debut!

On the 17th, his mother, Countess Isabel of Stolberg (née Princess of Orleans-Bragança) was received into the Imperial Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Glória (Our Lady of the Glory) do Outeiro, as a Sister Protectores during a Mass celebrated at the Imperial Church of Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro, in Rio de Janeiro.

Following her Family's tradition, the Countess also consecrated her five months old son to the protection of Our Lady.

Also present were Count Louis-Bernhard's paternal grandparents, Prince Fernando and Princess Maria da Graça of Orleans-Braganza, and aunt and godmother, Princess Luiza of Orleans-Braganza, who's a Sister Protectress of the Imperial Brotherhood since 2007.

Dr. Guido Schäffer and his wife, Maria Nazareth, were also present. Their late son, Servant of God Guido Schäffer, was a Brazilian seminarist who is in process of beatification by the Vatican. Princess Maria da Graça and Dr. Schäffer are cousins.

Princess Mia Isabel of Orleans-Braganza was christened on Saturday, at the Church of the Imperial Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro, in Rio de Janeiro, following the tradition stablished in 1819, when the future Queen Maria II of Portugal, daughter of Emperor Pedro I and Empress Leopoldina of Brazil was christened there.

Dr. Pablo Trindade de Souza (b. 1 May 1980) [son of Evandro Romeu de Souza and his wife Isis Maria, nee Trindade] & his wife Princess Maria Elisabeth of Orleans-Braganza (b. 1 March 1982) [eldest of the three daughters of Prince Francisco of Orleans-Braganza (b. 1955) and his former wife Princess Claudia Regina, nee Lisboa Martins Godinho] are expecting the birth of their first child, a daughter, sometime this year.

The couple married on 6 August 2011, at the Church de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro, in Rio de Janeiro.

It's the first grandchild of the maternal grandparents. Their two other daughters, twins Princesses Maria Eleonora and Maria Thereza of Orleans-Braganza (b. 1984), are still unmarried.

Dr. Jaddo Barbosa Bokel has died yesterday in Rio de Janeiro, at the age of 94.

He was the father of Princess Maritza of Orleans-Braganza, the wife of Prince Alberto, younger brother of Prince Luiz, Head of the Imperial House of Brazil. Prince Alberto and Princess Maritza have four children: Princes Pedro Alberto and Antonio Alberto and Princesses Maria Beatriz and Ana Thereza of Orleans-Braganza.

Dr. Jaddo was married to D. Mariza Bulcão Ribas Bokel for 64 years. Besides Princess Maritza and her family, he lefts to other daughters, designer Mônica Conceição and journalist Marcia Peltier, and their families.

Even with Princess Maritza's family being of Brazilian noble descent - they are descendants of Brazil's earliest noble, the Viscount of Torre de Garcia d'Ávila - Prince Alberto had to renounce his rights to the Brazilian Throne when he married her in 1983.

Imperial Family Of Brazil

Is there a Brazilian nobility in the same sense as in the European meaning of nobility? I've always thought it was more of a gentry kind of social class if you understand what I mean?
I know many families are descended from Portuguese noble families but does that automatically make you a member of the Brazilian nobility?

The noble titles were not hereditary, but the descendants of the nobles usually incorporated the titles of their ancestors into their surnames (the descendants of the Viscount of Ouro Preto now uses "Ouro Preto" as a surname, for example).

It's still quite easy to identify who descends from a noble here in Brazil, as many of those families are still part of the high society.

All siblings of the Head of the Imperial House who married Brazilian nationals married aristocrats.

But to be included in the nobility you have to be of Portuguese noble descent or be descended from people ennobled by the emperors?
