British Royal Family Engagements: 2022 - 2023

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
A good bit of research, Iluvbertie; just goes to show that those reporters who write articles saying that the rest of the RF are stepping up in the absence of the King and Princess have not done their due diligence.

I guess for the queen it is not so much the number of engagements but the type of engagements she is undertaking. Some of them are more high profile.

None have been 'more high profile'. They have received more coverage because Catherine isn't around for the media to write 20 articles about what she is wearing. They are basically the same type of engagements:

Anniversaries, Visited places, Received people (last year the President of the Republic of Cyprus but no one of that profile in 2024); met people, opened things, attended receptions.

The list is quite similar in types of engagements.

Weekly Update to 3rd March, 2024

Sorry for the delay - my family is dealing with my brother's cancer diagnosis and one of the consequences is that both my nieces are now planning their weddings to be sure that their father is able to be there. We are hoping for the best of course but planning for the worst and I have been involved in some of these arrangements (largely I have been taking my brother to and from chemo and then being with him while his wife and daughters do the actual planning).

Do we have enough working royals?

Perhaps Prince and Princess Michael should be given official roles?

Alternatively Beatrice and/or Eugenie could finally be utilised on a part time basis.

The issue is more to do with the age of the current working royals. So many are of the current ‘retirement’ age in the UK (66+) . This is worrying for a potential disconnection with younger generations and of course the possibility of further ill health in the next few years. Adding Prince and Princess Michael wouldn’t solve this. Including Beatrice and Eugenie would help the immediate problem, but I can’t see how it would be easy to be a part-time working royal.

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent 'retired' from public life just after Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee. There was an official announcement to that effect. Prince Michael has never been a working royal.

Beatrice and Eugenie were told when they were teenagers they would never be wanted or needed and now Charles and William have to live with that concept.

It isn't necessary for there to be a large number of working royals. Officially only the Sovereign is needed and the rest really just do 'make up jobs' such as getting involved in charities. They could easily have real jobs and no one would really miss them.

Charles, and even more William, want to go back to the days before WWI when largely the Sovereign did the constitutional stuff and the heir might do a few things (Queen Victoria made it clear that there was no role for the heir and her heir had to wait over 40 years before he was able to actually do anything official. He didn't give his son much to do during his reign either).

George V really pushed the 'charity' idea in the years after WWI to justify the family - given the overthrow of a number of royal families.

The move is now for smaller royal families across Europe with younger siblings being sidelined and cousins simply not being needed anymore.

They only need more working royals if they want to keep doing the 4,000 odd engagements the RF did back in say 2012. Charles seems to have indicated that isn't the way he sees the RF working.
Constitutionally the sovereign is the only one with anything to do day to day. We already have it that almost half those eligible to be Counsellors of State aren't "working royals" (Andrew, Harry, Beatrice aren't whilst Camilla, William, Anne and Edward are) so its also clear there is no need for all of those eligible for that role to be "working royals".
Charles wants to do things differently, its a new era.

Anne and Edward were added to the list of potential Counsellors of State precisely because Andrew, Harry and Beatrice aren't working royals (anymore), so, they needed more working royals to fulfill that role if they would be called upon.

However there is a precedent for non-working royals to serve as Counsellors of State e.g. the late Earl of Harewood often did so in the early years of the late Queen's reign. He even said it was often easier for him than for his mother as he could simply say to his boss 'I have to do something for The Queen' and no one would be disappointed that he didn't turn up while his mother would have to cancel an engagement.

Edward and Anne were added to avoid needing to call on Harry or Andrew and not because they weren't working royals. Although Charles indicated he would try not to need to call on non-working royals he is able to do so if needed (and given how rarely they are even needed these days it is possible that the position itself could be done away with altogether). The late Queen showed that everything that the CoSs have done in the past can be done a) by someone else e.g. the State Opening of Parliament which wasn't done by a royal in 1960 or 1964 or b) via zoom or telephone as she did during covid when she had her weekly audience with the PM via phone and run privy council meetings and received incoming High Commissioners and Ambassadors via zoom.

The King made a formal promise to Parliament not to call on non-working royals to serve as Counsellor of State going forward. See the thread on the topic for more information.

Harry and Andrew are non-working royals for a reason... Had that not been the case, the situation would indeed be different and there would have been less reason to try to avoid calling on those that are not working full-time for the monarchy.

This is a very good point about CoS. They are quite likely to be needed less and less. We saw even the late Queen signing faxed copies of documents "until the originals arrive". As technology gets even better it is only going to get easier and easier for the Sovereign to do much more from anywhere in the world. The days of the sovereign heading off for months at a time as was done as the start of QE2's reign are gone. More and more CoS are very much a "just in case" and even the instances where they would be used then are less and less barring some big emergency where everything would be torn up anyway and Camilla and William could step in.

This is why in the future I don't think all, indeed many, of the people eligible to be CoS will be working royals, because the likelihood is whey will never be needed to act as CoS. We see that now, yes Charles added Anne and Edward but that I suspect it because they were there to add and it makes sense to add them as "working royals" rather than having "non working royals" acting as CoS when Anne and Edward are available. Without going off topic I suspect the issue around two of the three "non working" royals will have played a significant factor as well. The media and MPs raised the idea of Andrew or Harry coming back to step in, over Anne and Edward, but no one batted an eye lid really at Beatrice being one of the CoS.

I don't think in the future the need for CoS will mean needing to include them in the "working Royal Family" which I suspect will become the Sovereign and Consort, heir and partner and maybe children of the sovereign at a push.
