Prince Christian's 18th birthday, October 15, 2023

Interesting.

The studio hosts were just talking about how not only the royal families ask each other for advise but also exchange experiences. - That has been confirmed by QMII.
But the court-official also talk to each other to exchange experiences and ask for advise. That has just been confirmed by the Christian Eugen Olsen.

- That's good to know. And I hoped they would do just that.

The whole point of the gala is to loosen things up. It's mostly the younger generation attending and they knew what they were invited to. I wouldn't think for a minute that anyone felt wronged because they were not seated according to rank. Also the DRF also has these round tables for galas and I believe the seating is always arranged so that there is a mix of people sitting together.

Didn't one of the royal houses post publicly once about a yearly meeting between the European RF heads of courts (or whatever we want to try and call the most senior executive in the royal court / household) once?

Yes, from what I've seen the Danish often do galas like this with royals spread out one per table as much as possible.

A lovely 18th birthday event, nice to see most the guests were the other teenagers invited. Christian did seem quite nervous but I guess they'll be plenty more speechmaking in the future for Christian.

Ingrid is clearly enjoying the lyrics to the song that is being sung right now.

- The musical train is about to speed up from now on, I suspect! :D

They may have annual meetings. I can't recall having read about it. And if so, it's great!

I didn't see the video of the foreign royals shaking hands with the DRF. I assume they were the last in the line. Is that correct?

I think the danish RF almost always used the round tables at last at Christiansborg. Onle for one of QMI.:'s jubiless they had along table.

it is also done in Sweden like we could see at the recent Golden Jubilee but there they had one Main table with the Guests of Honour.

Thank you all for the pictures and links.
What a joyful day full of love. All week we have seen the highlights from the Danish youth invited and it's so wonderful to see them in this experience.
I don't think the Queen, Frederik and Mary could be any more proud. Christian seems like such a good person.

Photos from the DRF

I won't lie, a bit teary eyed seeing Frederik and Mary with Christian.

A few years ago the heads of the different European courts were together in the Netherlands to watch the Prinsjesdag ceremony.

Yes, that happened after the ordinary guests had finished saying hello. When the doors were closed and before the processions.

--------------

When the whole thing ends in a couple of hours a drummer and a fifer from the Royal Lifeguard will enter the hall and play taps = Tappenstreich = Tappenstreg.
The DRF and other royals will follow the drum out, and that is the signal that the party has ended and all other guests will quietly depart as well.

The tradition goes back the 1500s where soldiers could be scattered all over a town - often in inns and other venues where refreshments were served. But when taps was played it was time to return to the camp.
Taps is simply a command to plug the beer-barrels.
This is how it sounds and looks:

-------------

The DR1 coverage has ended, but I understand BB will cover the guests leaving in a couple of hours.
Otherwise it's time for our resident newsdiggers to take over.

Just read the speech (thanks to Google Translate); he surely had help writing it but it seems a genuine and fitting for a prince his age. It's good to see how the various heirs take their heritage and the responsibilities that come with it seriously but also know that they might mess up but still try to do the best they can.

Elisabeth seated next to Felix (and at the same table as actress Safina Coster-Waldau – daughter of Game of Thrones' very own Jaime Lannister ).

Amalia seated at the same table as Isabella (a former Danish Bake-Off winner is seated between them ).

Pavlos seated next to his aunt Benedikte.

Gustav seated next to his aunt Anne-Marie.

Mette-Marit seated next to Joachim (with Athena at the same table).

Haakon seated next to Mary (with Vincent – and the young participant from Fanø in folk costume! – at the same table).

Victoria seated next to Frederik (with Josephine – and one of the Greenlandic youths! – at the same table).

Daniel seated next to Marie (with Estelle and Henrik at the same table).

Marie-Chantal and Carina seated with Christian's godfathers Jeppe Handwerk and Hamish Campbell.

Glad that all his godparents (uncle prince Joachim, aunt Jane, his father's cousin crown prince Pavlos, crown prince Haakon, crown princess Mette-Marit, crown princess Victoria and his parents' friends Jeppe Handwerk and Hamish Campbell) were able to attend this important milestone in his life.

That was the end of this low-key celebration of Christian. He is after all still only a Prince, so for example the government was only represented by a minister.

All in all I think the DRF as a whole, Christian's parents and QMII can look back on this day with a mix of delight and relief.

I think Christian won the Danes today.
He behaved well and came across as genuine and his speech was longer, less formal and more personal and not least relevant than could be expected.

Frederik also did well with his daddy-speech - managing to very much look like a middle-aged dad in his dark-framed glasses - where he interjected a "do put your phone down for a moment"-remark.

Christian took center stage and he did it in a very authentic, humble and human way. He can't go much wrong if he stays on that path.

Is one of them married? As she has a different name than Donaldson

Interesting to watch that, other than their mother, neither Princesses Isabella nor Josephine curtseyed to their grandmother, The Queen! I thought this was, more or less, obligatory within royal families....?!

Is it unusual that CP Mary did not give a speech too?

Christian is tall! But Elisabeth and Amalia ain't short either, even if we factor in high heels.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. That's something they need to work on.
Perhaps especially with Isabella as she can expect to attend official functions (doing a Benedikte) in the future.

Not really. Nor would it be at a "normal" celebration.
The host.
A parent.
The birthday-child (as we call it in DK regardless of age).
- And the tipsy aunt/uncle but we were spared that one.

Had Christian been crown prince then the really big show had been rolled out and here a speech by the PM might be expected as well. Speaking on behalf of Denmark and the Danes.

QMII's speech was fairly short though. I guess standing up for longer periods doesn't become her.

Anyway, despite Mary's talent for speeches I think it would have been overkill.
Christian and Frederik's speeches were memorable on their own.

I wonder if it feels awkward for Christian to be the only male heir in his generation ( unless we also count George Wales, who is much younger).

There is also Prince Jacques of Monaco and Prince Charles of Luxembourg who is much younger then him

I wish there was another male heir of his age whom he could bond with. Even if he is close to the princesses, it is not the same hanging out with the girls and the guys.

According to people I know in Copenhagen there is a large number of finely dressed people waiting in line to get into Amalienborg. There's apparently a big garden party taking place in a tent put up for the occasion.

Jacques is a Hereditary Prince, not a second in line like George, Charles and Christian.

Elisabeth and Amalia are also both not second in line but first
