Queen Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh Current Events Part 27: June 2018 -

I put this in the honours thread but here it is as well;

The Queen will confer a knighthood on Captain Tom Moore at Windsor Castle on Friday 17th July. Captain Moore’s family will be in attendance but it will not be available for public view.

Also a short video of The Queen being amused by the pilot of the Jamaican Bobsleigh team (who was on her Armed Forces call yesterday).

This is so lovely to watch. Sir Thomas Moore must be bursting with pride.
At sixteen years of age his King - George V passed away in 1936, then he saw King Edward VIII proclaimed King, then in the same year of 1936 a young Thomas saw King George VI take the throne and the coronation in 1937.
And now his Queen - Elizabeth II has made him a Knight for doing his very best to help his countrymen in these tough times. His family must be bursting with pride too. I am so pleased that Her Majesty was able to perform this honour despite the tough restrictions.

Many thanks for the video clips.

It warms the heart to witness this. It is after all an HONOUR. We don't see a lot of honourable things these days as monetary value appears to be attatched to almost everything.

Wow, it doesn’t get much better than this !

The ceremony even made the local news here in the midwestern United States!

Wonderful to see him honored today for his work for fundraising. :flowers:

The things he has seen in a 100 years, and 4 monarchs.

No doubt his family was so proud to be there with him for it. He can be a true inspiration to them and many others during this.

100% agree with you.

Sir Tom and the Queen are a part of a generation that lived through a terrible war and then worked tirelessly to lift up their country, the embodiment of honor and patriotism.

I think it was a great gesture for the Queen to knight him herself, she hasn't done it as often lately but I think she wanted to honor a man who has literally served his country his entire life, even now that he's old and frail.

The fact that HM left her granddaughter's wedding to knight Sir Tom is so lovely. I'm sure he resonates with her as they both played an active role in the war. Congrats to Sir Tom! He's made an impact with his charity work, too, as lots of other people, including young children with disabilities, have also decided to go on charity walks in lockdown inspired by him:

The Duke of Edinburgh was in fine form as he ended his 67 year term as Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles Regiment which was transferred to The Duchess of Cornwall.
A wonderful service of many years.

Thank you for the link to the article, which showed some snippet to the book Prince Philip Revealed by Ingrid Seward (release in early October). Prince Philip certainly put royal duties and reputation as top priorities, which is not surprising, given that he had to leave Royal Navy and support the Queen. He also have to overcome courtiers and staff, who were very hostile/antagonising (even snobbish) towards him due to his background and finances.

To me, he exhibited the qualities of "stiff upper lips", "tough love" and "no nonsense/ telling every as it is". I do not think this approach is ideal, especially looking from hindsight and perhaps he should have been more flexible. An example from the article is that "When Philip feels that his advice is being ignored, he reverts to the cold man he is frequently portrayed as being."

However, I do think the younger royals could learn a lot from Prince Philip, based on his past experiences. Even Philip himself was very welcoming to his daughter-in-laws by writing letters and in some occasion having conversations with them.

It must be hard for a man of his age to see the lack of sense of duty of nowadays.

Fascinating stuff! I love Philip, even though I know he was harsh with Charles as a child (not to be mean, but because he honestly thought he was doing the right thing for him) and never really got him. He’s 99, a man from another age, and I respect and admire his incredible devotion to duty.

Given that the Queen has said that her husband runs the household, I’m surprised that he allowed Andrew to be as indulged and spoiled as he was.

Does Philip have a decent relationship with Camilla ? Certainly HM does.
