After the death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1886 his uncle Prince Luitpold assumed the Regency for Ludwig's younger brother, King Otto I. Otto was mentally unstable and reigned as the nominal King of Bavaria for 26 years until his deposition in 1913. Luitpold acted as Prinzregent until his own death in 1912, his successful regency overseeing Bavaria's most prosperous era. As the "affable old man" as he was popularly called, his death led to an outpouring of public grief.
"Memories from the Royal Photo Albums" shows us rare pictures of the Prince Regent and for the first time, the most complete collection of portraits of members of the Bavarian royal family. It also includes photographs of related dynasties of the time.

This work was published in time for the 100th Death of Prince Regent Luitpold, on 12 December 2012. Prince Luitpold was the third son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and his wife Queen Therese, née Princess of Saxe-Hildburghausen. His eldest brother was the future King Maximilian II, his second brother Otto was from 1832 to 1862 King of Greece.
The focus of this book is Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, his family and his time. The book begins with a short, two-page biography about the life of the Prince Regent, following this the the Photo Album, with captions identifying the persons depicted.
Photos inlude not only Luitpold's ancestors, his wife Auguste (born Archduchess of Austria-Tuscany) and his four children, Prince Ludwig, Prince Leopold, Princess Therese and Prince Arnulf, but represent all members of the Wittelsbach family who lived at the time of the Prince Regent, including the two kings Ludwig II and Otto. As Prinzregent, Luitpold led the Adalbertische line of the royal house and the side line of the Dukes in Bavaria.
A section of the book called "Images of everyday life of Prince Luitpold", shows images of the Prince Regent's home in the Munich Residenz and outdoor activities such as duck feeding and hunting.
After the death of Prince Luitpold, the book covers the "post-Prince Regent era" and includes images of the families of his children. The eldest son, Ludwig follows his father as Prince Regent and in November 1913 is proclaimed Ludwig III, King of Bavaria. Ludwig's first-born son Rupprecht will be the last Crown Prince of Bavaria and the album is completed with photographs of his children, the grandchildren of the Prinzregent Luitpold.
