Ridiculous. I'd suggest they worry more about Africans starving, Tibetans being slaughtered into silence and Arabic women being oppressed by tyrannic war lords rather than Britain's internal affairs.

I dare the UN to call for the abolition of the monarchy in Saudi Arabia and the creation of a republic there. Why pick on the UK, where the royals are largely limited by the constitution?

The Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in Geneva wishes to contradict several inaccuracies and distortions contained in a report in the London Daily Express, which seems to have been echoed by certain other news organizations, to the effect that Sri Lanka called for the abolition of the British monarchy. There was no such call, not by Sri Lanka and not by the UN Human Rights Council. Indeed the quote cited in the Daily Express does not include such a call. It recommends only that the UK 'consider' the holding of a referendum on the desirability or otherwise of a written constitution, preferably republican, with a bill of rights

It's curious that a "recommendation" for the holding of a referendum would also state the preferred outcome!
More likely Sri Lanka's Permanent Mission in Geneva felt aggrieved about something a British diplomat said and this was their way of getting one back.

Our government is probably considering it, just because the UN suggested it and they know that Britain wouldn't go so far as to tell them to get lost!
