The New Year's Rose by Louis D'Aragon

Do you know the moon-rose
Do you know the time-rose
One is like the other
As in the mirror of the lake
One the other shows

Do you know the bitter rose
Made of salt and refusal
Which blossoms on the ocean
Like rainbow after rain
As the tide ebbs and flows

The dream-rose and the soul-rose
At market in bunches sold
Gamut of love forbidden
The game -rose the gamut- rose
And the rose of wasted steps

Do you know the fear-rose
Do you know the night- rose
Both of them seem painted
As sound is painted on lips
As fruit on the tree grows

All the roses that I sing
All the roses of my choice
All the roses I devise
In vain I sing their praise
To the rose before my eyes

dedicated to the memory of HSH Princess Grace and her everlasting love of roses.

I am sorry if I am posting something that everybody here already knows, but I was able to leaf through the latest Grace Kelly Picturebook with an intro by Tommy Hilfiger at my local Borders bookstore this afternoon.

It is a serious collection of photos. Of course, forum members are familiar with many pics. It is thick and heavy, and costs $40.00.

Despite our general knowledge of Grace's beauty and spirit, going through those pages have made me appreciate her more, and become more convinced of her legacy and unmatchable place in Monaco, Hollywood, and popular culture.

It does have some serious mistakes though -- I wish the editor was more detail-oriented. Unforgivable mistakes include identifying Lizanne in one of the pics as Mrs. Peggy Levine (it was a beautiful photo though of her and Grace walking at the beach) and wrong dates. Believe me, it would have been flawless if the forum members were responsible in supplying the dates and anecdotes.

Another thing I did not agree with was ending it with a chapter on Grace's death and funeral. I mean, if the book were meant to celebrate Grace's life, it would have been appropriate to feature as a last chapter Grace's children and grandchildren, as well as Monaco and its recognition of Grace's legacy, such as important landmarks and statues of her, and official portraits in the palace. I don't think it would have been difficult to get photos such as those especially since Tommy Hilfiger has friendly connections with Prince Albert. He mentioned this in an ABC interview.

Here is the online article with featured video: ABC News: Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures

The bottomline, nevertheless, is buy the book :)

I agree Iceflower, I wish there was a better version available. Great clippings, the pic where Grace is on the sofa is one of her best pics ever! It amazes me to read that she said that jeans were forbidden on her home.

Thanks for that insight on that book Royrules. I would really like to see it and why not buy it too! Does it have any pictures of her that we haven't seen?

You're very welcome monaco70s.

To answer your question, I will compare this new book with that of Howell Conant's, as both have the same concept.

The previous picture book by Howell Conant features more intimate photos especially since Howell was a friend and was the official photographer of Grace's. Also, Howell offered personal anecdotes or behind-the-scenes stories for most of the shots, giving us readers a more personal glimpse of the story. And who else can offer that wonderful compilation of all those annual family photos which showcased the changes of the Princely Family through the years besides the man who photographed them?

This new book however features more candid shots of Grace. The way I felt after going through it is that it is a more reverential take on the Princess. It was lovingly made, as all pictures were really flattering. The photographers who took the pics were obviously awed by her, as they didn't know her personally. There was this shot even of Grace leaving the Montreal hospital after suffering a miscarriage, and she looked so radiant and flawless -- nobody would have imagined that she just went through a traumatic and critical medical condition.

I have issues though of the way the pics were arranged. Not chronological. Like I was going through pages of Grace the actress, then the next page shows Princess Grace in the 60's. It could have been better arranged in my opinion.

Also, I think Stephanie could have been featured more. I think even Howell Conant failed in that regard -- more photos of Grace and a teenage Stephanie would have been significant. Especially since Steph has two misfortunes in this light: first, she was with her mom when the accident happened, and second, whe was the child who had her mom the least amount of time.

But again, no shortage of Grace Kelly worshipping in this book. The foreword by Tommy Hilfiger (very appropriate too that a leading fashion designer speaks about one of the most significant fashion leaders of recent history) also is a very articulate and learned assessment of the legend that is Grace Kelly.

I'm glad you liked the clippings, Monacos and rorryrules, thank you very much for that interesting book review,
it helped more than any official one :)

Here are two more clippings, on the first one you can see Grace with her sister I think, on the second one she's
back on stage with Frank Sinatra:

Clipping 1
Clipping 2

Great pics Iceflower, the ones with Sinatra were taken on his concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1971, she was the presenter that night. I remember seeing this concert available on DVD and it said that Princess Grace was the one who introduced Sinatra. I believe it's still available in case anyone wants to buy it for the footage of Princess Grace.

Thanks as always for the additional information, Monacos :flowers:

Here are two pics of Grace - the second one is a bit ruined ;)

Great photos! The first one I see a lot of Stephanie and the second one I see a lot of Charlotte.

Great pics Iceflower :) and you're welcome ;) The second pic is from a late 19th century masquerade ball held in 1971 at the Casino.

I just saw on the news that Vanity Fair Magazine has cast Claire Danes as Grace Kelly in it's upcoming edition. {removed off topic part of post- Lady Jennifer}

She Walks In Beauty by Lord Byron

She walks in beauty like the night,
Of cloudless climes and starry skies,
And all that's best of dark and bright,
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light,
Which heaven to gaudy day denies
One shade the more, one ray the less
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face,
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure how dear their dwelling place
And on that cheek and o'er that brow,
So soft so calm yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent
A mind at peace with all below
A heart whose love is innocent.

dedicated to the beloved memory of HSH Princess Grace and her love of poetry.

Oh God, no... :bang:
I can't stand that Claire Danes person... She was ok until she started to act like fashionista wanna be. The girl is trying too hard, doesn't belong in those (socialites) circles and looks ridiculous... but JMO.

I agree. Claire Danes...no. Scarlett Johannson...yes.

Someone asked me if Grace had learned to speak french before she got married, I wasn't sure, then I remembered in the movie High Society (My favourite) there is a scene where Tracy Lord (Grace) walks into the room and speaks in french to her younger sister Carolyn Lord. Firstly, is she speaking french properly (She probably was) and then does anyone have that clip?:)

Hey Dori,
You could try YouTube - that may have a clip of High Society for you. I use it quite often and they seem to have a lot of clips of almost everything.
Hope this helps,
Patrick.

Jaya, thanks for the poem, Grace would have loved your thoughtful present. Who knows, maybe she even read it during one of her poetry recitals ?

Thanks for the nice clippings and pics, Tosca and Kate12 :flowers:

Here are two fantastic pics of Grace I had not seen before:

Grace - 1

Grace - 2

Hi Duke of Windsor,
I did search youtube thanks, I didn't find anything on High Society, but found great wedding footage which I then posted on old, new, royal and blue.
Thanks for you help:)

Hi Dori,
Well, I'm glad I could be of some help! YouTube is an excellent place to find clips of royalty doing all manner of things, such as the aforementioned weddings to some really bizzare stuff! You just have to filter through all the junk people put on YouTube to find some really good stuff :)
Patrick.

Grace in that very strong pink, that's an impressive appearance, thank you very much for the two pictures, Iceflower,
I also like the close up portrait - Grace in all her beauty!!

I got another picture of her that was made in Paris in 1959, so at the beginning of her time as a princess

I have attempted to select poems I either knew she liked& possibly recited or ones we can define Princess Grace by.For we did define ourselves by her wondeful presence on this earth as a barometer for excellence when among us. Glad you appreciate.
