Queen Lovisa
Lovisa was the daughter of prince Fredrik of Netherlands and Louise of Preussen. 1850 she married with crownprince Carl of Sweden and Norway. At Oscar I:s death in 1859 Carl and Lovisa became King and queen of Sweden. The following year Lovisa was crowned queen in Stockholm and Trondheim.

Lovisa died in 1871 at the 30:th of Mar. As she was a woman of the people in heart and she was patron of the poor she was much loved by the people.

She founded and protected crownprincess Lovisas hospital for children, femöresföreningen (a society meant to found childrens homes in the north part of the country), Lotten Wennbergs fond, Queen Lovisas understödsförening, Allmänna institutet för dövstumma och blinda, tysta skolan, and many, many more institutions. She also founded similar institutions in Norway.

Victoria was the daughter of great duke of Fredrik of Baden. and Louise of Preussen. 1881 she married crownprince Gustaf of Sweden in Karlsruhe. At Oscar II death 1907 Gustav V and Victoria king and queen of Sweden.

As she had a poor health she often had to get out of Stockholm. 1906-1919 she lived three to four months each year at Solliden, Öland. After 1919 she spent long periods on Capri. During the first worldwar she once was at the castle in Karlsruhe when it was attacked by french bombers.

At the end of the war she was forced to flee Karlsruhe and eventually she ended up at the castle of Mainau which she became the owner of after her parents deaths. 1919 She returned to Sweden where she kept herself occupied by her interest in art and literature.

1926 she moved to Villa Svezia in Rome where she died in 1931. Queen Victoria was a talented person in art and Literature ad she hade a high work moral. At the breakout of war 1914 she founded the queen vicotira centralkommité in order to organize the work to help the suffering people. She also founded Drottning Victorias Vilohem near soliden. She worked for the red cross and for the defense of Sweden.

She gave birth to three sons: Gustaf Adolf, Vilhelm and Erik.

Queen Sophia of Sweden and Norway

Queen Sofia

Sofia was the daughter of duke Wilhelm of Nassau and Pauline of Württemberg, The 6:th of Jun. 1857 she married in Biebrich with Crownprince Oscar of Sweden. 1872 she became queen of Sweden and Norway whereafter the crowning took place the following year.

Queen Sofia was strong person with religious interest. 1877 she went under a large operation which forced her to withdraw from the public life for some time. 1907 she became a widow and 1913 she died on the 30:th Dec. at Stockholms castle.

She spent a lot of effort on charity, she founded 'hemmet för frigivna kvinnor', Sophiahemmet and Kung Oscars och Sofias Guldbröllopshem. She got four children, the sons Gustaf, Oscar, Carl and Eugen.

Josefina was the daughter of prince Eugéne de Beauharnais, vice king of Italy and Augusta Amalia of Bayern.

1822 she was bethrotted to Crownprince Oscar of Sweden and Norway in Eichstedt, Germany. The following year she married him par porcuration in München. Soon thereafter Josefina wnet to Stockholm to get crowned queen of Sweden and Norway.

Josefina became a widow in 1859 and she died in 1876, 7:th of Jun.

She founded Josefina hemmet (for nursing of poor and handicapped in the catholic church), the institution for nursing of the 'defenseless and fallen', the institution for education of women and the society for 'tender and moral maternity wellfare'. She got five children, Carl, Gustaf, Oscar, Eugénie and August. The marriage between Josefina and Oscar seems to have beeen a bit stormy now and then as Oscar had his mistress Emilie Hägqvist.

And when I couldn't find the word "porcuration" in my dictionary. I did a Yahoo search and one of the searches gave me the link that I just posted!

porcuration doesn't mean anything unless if it's a hand word for the process in which you cure a pig! But the word should be procuration which means by power of attorney or by prozy. That means in this case, Josefina wasn't at her wedding or the groom wasn't there!

Queen Louise of Sweden (1889-1965) was born HSH Princess Louise of Battenberg, the daughter of Prince and Princess Louis of Battenberg. Her father was a son of the morganatic marriage his father, HRH Prince Alexander of Hesse made with Countess Julie von Hauke, later created HSH Princess of Battenberg. Louise's mother was born HRH Princess Victoria of Hesse, daughter of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and his wife Princess Alice of Great Britain, second daughter of Queen Victoria. Louise's parents were first cousins once removed.

After World War I, the Battenbergs, due to anti-German sentiment in Britain, anglicanized their names to Mountbatten and gave up their German princely titles for British peerages. Thus, TSH Prince and Princess Louis became The Most Honourable Marquess and Marchioness of Milford Haven, and Princess Louise became Lady Louise Mountbatten.

Louise was engaged to an artist, Alexander Stuart-Hill who was nicknamed Shakespeare by the Mountbattens. Her family disapproved of “Shakespeare,” and Louise eventually broke off the engagement after learning that her fiancé was homosexual.

In 1923 at age thirty-four (an “old maid” by standards of the day), Lady Louise Mountbatten became Crown Prince Gustav of Sweden’s second wife. Tragically, she gave birth to a stillborn child in 1925. The couple would not be able to have any more children. The couple became king and queen in 1950; Gustav was nearly seventy when he took to the throne. Queen Louise died in 1965 and King Gustav VI Adolf died in 1973, succeeded by his grandson, Carl XVI Gustaf, Sweden’s current monarch.

Louise was closely related to many other famous royals of the 20th century. King Gustav’s first wife, Crown Princess Margaret, whom he married in 1905 and died in 1920, was Louise’s first cousin once removed thus also a descendent of Queen Victoria. Born Princess Margaret of Connaught, she was a daughter of Queen Victoria’s third son Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught. Gustav and Margaret’s only daughter (Louise’s stepdaughter) Ingrid became the Queen of Denmark. Ingrid named her eldest daughter, Denmark’s current monarch Margrethe, after her mother. Both Margaret/Margrethe share the same nickname “Daisy.”

Two of Louise’s Hesse aunts (her mother, Victoria’s younger sisters) both married into the Russian imperial family. Elisabeth Feodorovna (Ella) married Tsar Nicholas II’s uncle and became the Grand Duchess Sergei. Victoria and Ella’s youngest sister, Alexandra Feodorovna (Alix) married Tsar Nicholas II and became Russia’s tragic last Tsarina.

Louise’s uncle Prince Henry of Battenberg married Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter. Henry and Beatrice’s only daughter, Victoria Eugenie “Ena” married King Alfonso XIII of Spain and was the defacto Queen of Spain until the Spanish royal family went into exile in 1931. Ena was Louise’s cousin twice-over: on their Battenberg fathers’ side, they were first cousins; on their mother’s side they were first cousins once removed. Ena’s grandson is the current Spanish monarch, King Juan Carlos I.

Louise had two famous siblings of her own. Her elder sister, Alice of Battenberg, Princess Andrew of Greece, was the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who is Queen Elizabeth II’s husband. Louise’s younger brother was Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was a British naval hero (their father was also active in the British navy) and last Viceroy of India. He was Prince Charles’ mentor until his tragic death in 1979 as a result of an IRA bomb.

Well, Denny, the pics of young Louise are from "Advice to my Granddaughter." Older Louise are CDV's I found at ebay (of course, didn't win any).

I absolutely love this thread about queens from the past.

The pictures of Desideria and Josefina are truly epic. From a different time and place.

I just wanna share a few aha's that I've had while I read about these queens:

The recent queen Louise (who died 1965) and queen Lovisa (the princess from the Netherlands in the late 19th century), neither of these two brought any blood into the Swedish royal veins.

Lovisa did have a daughter, but she married the Danish crown prince and thereby she ensured Dutch blood into the Danish royal veins.

I think I can see the Lovisa look in some of the Danish princes / princesses.
(prince Ingolf and princess Elisabeth).

Queen Victoria, she must have had a hard marriage. According to Josefine's text she didn't spend a lot of time in Stockholm with the King. I can see the explanation being that, as it's often said, King Gustav 5 Adolf was a homosexual. I hope they will give us a rerun of the TV-series that was made some years ago about all these queens.

Let me just say then, that Victoria is said to have been unfaithful too. It was a weird marriage. It was happy in the beginning, it seems, but it just got worse and worse. Victoria spending a lot of time abroad didn't help either. Gustav V's "lover" was also a compulsive liar. We simply don't know what went on a century ago.
