King Carl Gustaf was interviewed by SVT on Friday. He expressed his admiration for the swedish efforts.
- It has been fantastic. You have really set the bar high, but you have to do it, otherwise you go nowhere. Some things we should not talk about, where it did not go exactly as you wanted. But then you have just take another chance.
The king also thinks about the different sports, where some seem to fall more into the taste than others.
- Here (in ski cross) it goes quite fast. The long distance ski races last longer and curling competitions end almost never. They are quite long. But I heard that they might change over so that in the future they only run eight rounds, because it takes insanely long time.

On Saturday king Carl Gustaf was watching curling final for men. Sweden got silver, USA won.

It looks like King Carl Gustaf was bored by the length of the curling game. Personally, I was surprised the US team beat Canada in the semi and Sweden in the final. Both Canada and Sweden are normally ranked higher than the US in world championships.

Me too Mbruno! Curling on TV in the US has often been at 5 or 6 AM. So my pattern has been to wake up and hit the channel covering curling in the last weeks. It's a (mostly) gentle, honorable sport and it's a lot like chess in that one throws a stone in anticipation of what your foe will throw and how it will play out for several stones. It's, frankly a genteel background to greeting the day for me. I will miss it as I will go back to US news, which is never fun these days...

And let me just say congrats to ALL the curling teams this year. There has been a changing of the guard, which is hard for the stability of the sport. But Curling has all the elements to endure for the future. It is social, it is technical, it is athletic and it definitely has a psychologic element. Frankly, curling makes me HAPPY!

I had never really paid attention to curling before the Sweden vs. USA for the gold match. It reminded me too much of cleaning. The other half filled me in on what goes on and the strategic moves being made and it actually started to be a bit interesting. Of course, like baseball and chess, its slow and I could easily be doing something else on my computer too but I know more about curling now than before. It grows on you.

I grew up in a country where rugby, cricket and soccer are religion, and where we have little snow. Currently we share our time between living in South Africa and Canada. Consequently, I have been introduced to the wide range of Sports making up the Winter Olympics. And I love all of them! Having tried my hand at skiing and knowing how difficult it is to just stay upright, I can only admire the skill and fearlessness of those athletes. Speed and aerobatics seem to be key elements in many codes and it takes my breath away just watching them.

We are currently in SA, and though we had only one athlete there, there was continuous coverage across 4 channels! Curling reminds me a lot of Lawn Bowling, the aim and skills required being similar.

Canada has enjoyed their most successful Winter Games to date - well done to all. A pity about the Hockey and Curling, next time!

I am sorry I missed P Albert’s commentary at the bobsled events- he gets so excited!

Congratulations to the top 3 countries in the medal table: Norway, Germany, and Canada. The United States finished 4th and the Netherlands were 5th. Using the number of gold medals as ranking criterion, Sweden would come 6th.

I really enjoy the curling. Sadly didn't get to see as much of it as i would have liked at these games. Just enjoyed the closing ceremony. Wonderful.

I used to like the Olympics so much more in the past! When it seemed athletes came out of nowhere to turn in an amazing performance, and there were fewer events.

Now, people end up with 20 medals or something. It seems somehow less special.
There's all sorts of corporate sponsorships.
When Peggy Fleming won skating, I read she competed in a dress that her mother made for $8. Now costumes are all designer and cost thousands.

AND, there's been a lot of poor sportsmanship in these particular games.

Maybe it is just me, but I think past games were far more true to the Olympic spirit.
(But perhaps I'm just being grumpy).

Perhaps the thing that has detracted much from the Olympic games for me is that if an athlete is representing a country, its very common that the athlete does not live in or train in his country.

For example. Figure skating. We saw Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu take the gold medal and Italy's Javier Fernandez taking silver. Both of them are coached and trained by a former US Olympian himself, Brian Orser, in the US.

Even the Olympic Games are becoming more and more globalized.

I am able to follow the Olympics quietly closely this time, thanks to the Lunar New Year holiday and very less time difference

. I agree that there are some acts of poor sportsmanship, but there are also many moving and inspiring moments. Everything has its good side and bad side :flowers:

. (Actually I think the past always looks better than it was, there were many controversies and scandals in previous games too but because of many reasons people don't know them)

And Brian Orser himself is Canadian!
(At least, he was when he competed).

I think they should change the rules. Athletes must train in the country they are representing.

Javi is a bronze medalist from Spain and Brian is your northern neighbour, a Canadian and they train in Toronto

I think the problem is winter sport really depends on natural environment and facility. If you participate in snow sport then you need a snowy weather, if you participate in ice sport then you need a rink or a track. When your country don't have what you need the only thing you can do is training in other country.

I think it will kill the winter sport and the Olympics will become a monopoly of particular countries. In this Game we only have one athlete, she participated in alpine skiing and of course she has to train outside Hong Kong as we don't have snow. And for figure skating (and some other sports) training in other countries and having a foreign coach is very common for these skaters from "small countries" because good coaches would not appear out of nowhere when your country doesn't have a good foundation and development (even North Korea had send their pairs to a Canadian coach for a short training).

This is easy to say when you come from a country like the US or Canada. But when you’re an athlete from a country like mine, which doesn’t have a bob or a luge track, the only way you can train is to travel to Germany and use the facilities they have. This is far from easy or cheap, so not many get the opportunity to even try.
And even with a sport like skiing, all European skiers train on glaciers in the Alps during warmer months, there is simply no snow in the rest of Europe.

You may want to read up on Esmee Visser, the winner of the 5k women's speed skating. She is NOT a professional athlete (yet) and had never even competed against all the big 5k riders (prior to the Olympics she only raced internationally twice (first in the 'B' group and second at the European championship skipped by all big riders in preparation for the Olympics), when she qualified for the Olympics she asked 'when are the Olympics?' and still she won the gold medal!
