Royal Transport: Land, Sea and Air

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
:previous: Blog Real, Thank you for all the fun photos! It is nice to see many royal ladies behind the steering wheels.

I wasn't sure where to put this so mods please move if it's in the wrong place.

It's strikes me as wonderfully dotty but anyway.:D

It looks really posh to have a royal train although the UK no longer has a royal yacht as still do Denmark and Norway.

I had the thought the royal train was older but the article above stated the current one only came into use in 1977 to mark the Silver Jubilee.

It's my impression "the royal train" has been around since Queen Victoria. I think over the past 150 years or so there have been several iterations of the royal train. It's been fascinating to learn more about the train. I especially learned quite a bit from the documentary "The Secrets of the Royal Train" as well, thank you to Irish Royalist for the Daily Mail articles.

Queen Elizabeth has a new burgundy coloured Range Rover (new model, only just released), which she used yesterday when driven to the royal Windsor Horse show gala event for the Platinum Jubilee.

Do the Belgians have any state/vintage cars at their disposal?

I do not think I have seen them in one. The King and Queen tend to usually be seen in Mercedes S-Class cars.

Queen Margarethe of Denmark and Princess Anne, The Princess Royal have both been using Bentley Bentayga SUVs as their principal cars for royal engagements.

Not the most elegant of cars, IMO, but I guess they are practical and comfortable. I wish they would both just use Range Rover's instead.

I was surprised Anne swapped to the Bentayga from the Flying Spur she use to have which is more like a proper saloon car. I wonder if it was because the Bentayga was the first to come in hybrid (the Flying Spur now comes in hybrid so maybe she'll change back?) I read somewhere Daisy chose the Bentayga in part as it was better for her back (but so would a Range Rover)

I wonder whether for Anne its because she and her family drive Range Rovers as their" everyday" cars

Now that Frederik is King, Mary and he are starting to use the Bentley Mulsanne previously used by Queen Margarethe. In recent years, QMII had started to use a Bentley Bentayga, perhaps because of her back issues.

A lot of more elderly people seem to prefer 4x4 style cars, they are easier to get in and out of as they don't require bending down or stooping half as much to get into as a saloon car.

I do love a good Bentley. However, not very "environmentally friendly" which I'd have thought Frederik would go for.

Whilst a Bentley may not be very environmentally friendly, surely it is more environmentally friendly to use a car that is already in the garage than buy a newer, "green" car!

‘In movement. Vehicles and carriages of Patrimonio Nacional’ shows their evolution over time and the role they played in the representation of the monarchy from the 16th to the 20th century.

Yes tbf I agree. i’m obviously getting cynical in my old age and was surprised they didn’t have a new electric car to proudly display on the occasion. Not that they should…. Just that its the pr move i wouldn’t have been surprised by.

And a lovely new Royal Claret lotus too!

It is a lovely car, but I am worried that in these hard times that it does not look good for the King to buy a new £160,000 car. I do accept the car is environmentally sound, but times are getting harder in the UK, with families struggling, even those people who previously have been doing well. Taxes are increasing, wages are stagnating. I do worry that it may not be a good thing for Charles to be seen to spending so much money. The respect granted to HLM has not, in my opinion, fully translated to Charles.

I do wonder whether this has actually occurred to the King's advisers? I see he was photographed in a very old overcoat - perhaps it was part of a strategy to try to emphasis 'frugal Charles, with his environmentally sound lifestyle.

A lot of electric cars are around the £100,000 mark these days. Audis, Mercedes BMW and Range Rover all have electric cars that are around or past £100,000. William drove an electric Audi worth over £100,000 when he went to see Catherine in hospital. It also isn't as if anyone truly believes the King doesn't have funds to buy ten such cars - despite the fact he probably either got a hefty discount or is leasing it on favourable terms.

Not quite sure where the DM got the £160k number from. Had a look at the Lotus website, most Eletre's are around the £100k mark. I appreciate that is a fair amount of money, but that is what a good Range Rover costs these days as well. Also, most people lease cars these days, so the actual capital outlay is less.

Do we know, that the King bought this car? I doubt it.

I doubt too, that Prince William bought his Audi or something. The Royal Family gets this cars for free, I am convinced.

I expect you are correct about the King not buying the car outright. The British Royal Family don't as a rule accept freebies but many Royals and their families do indeed lease their cars. Land Rover [Range Rover] in particular offer the BRF and their families particularly favourable terms when it comes to leasing cars - Pippa Middleton and Carole Middleton and James Middleton all drove leased Range Rovers which attracted some press comment because there were participating in 'royal' deals.

Whether they paid the full amount or got a beneficial lease arrangement is not the main point for me. It's the optics of the King being seen in such an expensive car when many people are struggling at the moment...
