I was looking at photos from Christmas of the Norwegian royal family and it got me to thinking about the snapshot-like "semi-official" photographs coming from the Norwegians and the Danish in particular. They're not always terrible, but the British and the Swedish families, for instance, seem to have a better handle on consistently good pictures.
At holidays and weddings it appears that Norwegian/Danish family members are arranged haphazardly in the corner of a room without much regard to composition, shadow or anything else. The shots are charming in their candid quality, but it almost looks like they're going to the prom or something and mom took the picture with her Nikon. Very amateur feel. Am I the only one who thinks hiring a first-rate photog like Mario Testino would do wonders for official(ish) photographs? Or maybe I'm being overly critical (which I will preemptively blame on my Los Angeles provenance).
