Marguerite was a French Princess,the daughter of Francois I & Queen Claude,she was a younger sister of Henri II.Marguerite was also a close personal friend of Catherine de Médicis.

Marguerite was the longest lived of all of King Francis I's children. The title of Duchess of Berry gave her material and financial independence.

Marguerite de France was named in honour of her aunt and godmother, Marguerite d'Angoulême later queen of Navarre.
