King Felipe's Ex-Girlfriends

It was a very big story all over Europe. In the days before the internet the general public expected them to marry. Tatjana attending school in Madrid only fuelled the flames of the rumours since it was said that it was part of a plan set up by their mothers to let them get to know each other better in private and have Tatjana learn more about Spain before the engagement was announced.

It was on December 13, 2001 that Prince Felipe announced the end of his relationship with Eva Sannum.

Felipe on Eva Sannum:
"We have decided - the Prince affirmed - for strictly personal and particular reasons, that each one will follow their own path in life". Later, he added: “His strength, his dignity, his sensitivity, his serenity, his ability to excel, his sense of justice and his determination to achieve excellence in what he sets out to do have always impressed me”. "I have always enjoyed, the trust of the Kings, my parents, in my criteria, in respect for the will and in making any decision".

I believe the king and queen were most pleased this came to an end.
I wonder what they made of Isabel Sartorius?

Her parents were divorced, I dont think this will have played a role Felipe went on to marry a divorced woman. Isabel was a few years older and all in all rumored not to be Princess material with regard to the hard work that is expected in Spain.

I think at that time they had higher expectations for the future Princess of Asturias which they had given up by the time Letizia appeared.

According to Isabel herself, Queen Sofia was very kind to her and supportive of her because of her family situation. On paper she as the daughter of the Marquess of Marino was the perfect girl for Prince Felipe, but her mother's drug addiction and her parent's divorce spoke against her. In the end the relationship ended because they were to young.

I think that of all of King Felipe's girlfriends, the kings' favorite must have been Isabel Sartorius, because she was from the Spanish aristocracy. I doubt that the kings liked or sympathized with Eva Sannum; she wasn't the wife they dreamed of for their son.
As for Gigi Howard, who had a brief relationship with Felipe in the 90s, I don't know if she would have been accepted by the Kings of Spain.
I think that in the end, Letizia ended up being the right choice for him, and the fact that she has a career and wants to assume the role of princess and queen in a country like Spain may have helped the kings accept her at the beginning. But we know that Juan Carlos never really liked Letizia, and even Queen Sofía had a complicated relationship with her for a while.

They gave her a hard time and threw her under the bus for almost a decade, in JCs case even to this very day. They had fought off all these girlfriends until after Eva Sannum Felipe said, no more. At the time of the engagement, he was almost 36, it was time to settle, some pressure to get a wife and heirs on the way. No way a decade earlier Letizia would have gotten a foot in the door at Zarzuela.
