Crown Princess Mary Presents Research Communication Award

Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary today was present at the opening of the 2015 Festival of Research and presented this year’s Research Communication Award.

After arriving at the Danish Technical University, the Princess – alongside Education and Research Minister Sofie Carsten Nielsen – delivered the prize of 100,000DKK to Aarhus University Professor Lars Østergaard for his research into infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS.

She was then given a tour of the university’s research facilities, where she was shown the current projects underway focusing on smart cities and health technology. In another area, Mary was told about marine research and got to see some plankton under a microscope.

The Crown Princess was particularly impressed with a visually controlled hearing aid, contemplating “what it can mean for so many who have difficulty hearing.” She also told the media that she hopes to be able to bring her children to the festival one day, as it “arouses one’s curiosity and gives a slightly deeper understanding of the importance of research.”

Crown Princess Mary has been patron of Research Day since 2006.
