Joined by his son, Prince Carl Philip, the King marched into the courtyard to the tune of the military band before received flowers and well-wishes from the crowd that had gathered to wish the King a happy birthday. There was also a 21-canon salute for the King. Viewing the celebration from above was Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and her fiance Daniel Westling, who were standing on one of the Palace balconies.

King Carl Gustaf and Prince Carl Philip later joined the trio on the balcony before the group headed back inside the Palace following the conclusion of the celebrations. The only family member not present was Princess Madeleine, who is currently in the US for a World Childhood Foundation event.
