Events and Athletes Discussion 2012 London Olympics

A young man has been arrested for malicious tweets against diver Tom Daley. The tweets started off as just nasty and mean "I hope you know you let down your father". Tom's father died of cancer in 2011. Then the tweets progressed to " I am going to find you and drown you in the pool". Malicious and threatening tweets can lead to prosecution in the UK.

Now there's something to make one feel warm and fuzzy. I don't understand the need to be so nasty at any time, but especially when a person is going through something stressful, such as a major competition. Glad there will be some legal action taken against this lunatic.

Michael Phelps just lost his 'main' event the 200m butterfly to Chad LeClos.

Team USA win 4x 200m freestyle relay. Michael gets his 15th gold.

Great swim by Le Clos. Phelps is not the dominant swimmer he was 4 years ago, although he has now tied the record for most Olympic medals.
Princess Charlene's offer of training facilities in Monaco for the South African team prior to the games may not have helped the SA team ( no way to really know) but it certainly did not hurt them. The SA swim team is having a pretty successful Olympics so far.

At first I was stunned at you for saying this. But then I read further into this 'case' and read that he also threatened with death (not just to Tom Daley) and racist towards Asian people. There should indeed be some kind of legal action.

Yes. It was not just a tweet to Tom Daley. I read his whole timeline and it was truly vile. Can't repeat them but to lots of different people too . Tonight the police say they are investigating the other tweets too . It's sad someone this young can be so full of hate. Needs help .

He sure sounds like a piece of sh.t, for sure. I can't imagine they can really punish him though. The internet is a free medium for anyone to use.

Not entirely, you are still responsible for what you write and can be sued for libel or in this case prosecuted for uttering death threats.

I've worked with kids, and you'd surprised at what they say (and the sad part is, they bring it from home). The quote from a song from 'South Pacific' 'you've got to be taught to hate and fear' rings very, very true. Hate is not something we're born with. It is something that is taught, and modeled even. I'd say that this person has seen his share of hatred, either at home, or among his peers. Very, very sad indeed, and at a time when people are supposed to come together in peace, to celebrate accomplishment.

Congratulations :britflag:! Well done. I remember when USSR was dominating this sport, and am so glad to see other countries on the podium.
USSR Olympic team used to be comprised of the best talent available in the republics. I think that the Russian federation still has got the strongest gymnastics and figure-skating schools.

Eight badminton players have just been disqualified from the games for purposely loosing their matches last night so as to get a better draw in the next round.

As they should be. You've come to the Olympic Games, and you purposely throw matches so you can win more medals for your country (which was the Chinese aim - instead of the two Chinese teams meeting in the semi-final, they would have met in the final)? Talk about disgusting sportsmanship. Had I been in the crowd there last night, I most likely would have booed them as well.

I hope the IOC stands firm and dismisses the South Korean and Indonesian appeals - whether or not they were "in it" from the beginning is not the point, once they realised what was going on, they then joined in.

As I understand the situation it is actually the Badminton Federation that did the disqualifications not the IOC. This only disqualifies them from womens doubles. As things stand now they could still compete in singles and mixed doubles events. We will know the result of the appeal in about 1 hour.

Thanks for the correction NGalitzine. Good on the Badminton Federation then. Our commentators here said that it was IOC who disqualified them, but it honestly doesn't surprise me if they got that wrong.

Personally, I would ban them outright from the Games - who is to say this isn't their game plan for the singles and mixed doubles?

Agree completely with the disqualification; their actions were against the very code of conduct for sportsmen.
Quite "interesting" matches to watch though, with all participants trying to lose. The spectators probably wondered whether the rules have changed.

 Congratulations to Bradley Wiggins from Team GB!

He is the first man to win both Tour de France and Olympic cycling gold in same year.

Bradley Wiggins took gold in Mens Cycling Time Trials. Bradley had won the Tour de France a couple of weeks ago. Team GB Chris Froome took bronze in the same event.

It was hard to watch in how much pain Fabian Cancellara was. He is such a great person and a great cyclist.

The Badminton appeals have been rejected. Don't know yet if they will be allowed to continue in singles and mixed doubles events, or if the IOC will now step in and just remove them entirely from the Olympics.

bradley has made us all so proud what a wonderful man he is well done

Bradley Wiggins is amazing!
