Looking back on British royal history, it's proven to be fragile and accidental. And I couldn't help but wonder last night "if certain events had or hadn't happened, how would the succession proceed?" And here are the would-be monarchs today under particular circumstances.
If George, Duke of Clarence followed Henry VI per the attainder on Edward IV:
Simon Abney-Hastings, 15th Earl of Loudoun. 'Acceded' in 2012 as "Simon I".
17x-great-grandson of George, Duke of Clarence.
If Henry VIII's will had been followed, barring the Seymour children due to the shaky legitimacy:
George Child-Villiers, 10th Earl of Jersey. 'Acceded' in 1998 as "George VII".
14x-great-grandson of Princess Mary Tudor.
If Lady Katherine Grey's marriage had been public on top of Henry VIII's will being followed:
Teresa Freeman-Grenville, Lady Kinloss. 'Acceded' in 2012 as "Teresa I".
15x-great-granddaughter of Princess Mary Tudor.
Had the Monmouth Rebellion succeeded with evidence of Lucy Walter being royally wed:
Richard Scott, 10th Duke of Buccleuch. 'Acceded' in 2007 as "Richard IV".
9x-great-grandson of James Scott, Duke of Monmouth.
Scotland's king had the country voted against the Acts of Union and Sophia of Hanover as Stuart heiress:
Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 16th Duke of Hamilton. 'Acceded' in 2010 as "Alexander V".
14x-great-grandson of James II of Scotland.
Had 'The Forty-Five' succeeded:
Franz, Duke of Bavaria. 'Acceded' in 1996 as "Francis II".
8x-great-grandson of Henrietta Maria Stuart.
If Edward, Duke of Kent was not Queen Victoria's father:
Prince Ernst August of Hanover. 'Acceded' in 1987 as "Ernst I".
Senior male-line 4x-great-grandson of George III.
Those are all the alternatives I could think of, but I'm sure there would be more dependent on certain historical butterflies.
