And in 1851, his nephew Louis-Napoleon Bonaparate, President of France, led a self-coup ending the French assembly. The following year the French empire would be re-established with Louis as Emperor Napoleon III. Louis' father was Napoleon's younger brother Louis (King of Holland at one time) and his mother was Josephine's daughter Hortense.
1723- death of Philipe II, Duke of Orleans. He was a nephew of Louis XIV (his father was Loui's younger brother Philipe). He married his first cousin, his Uncle Louis' daughter Francois, the child of his mistress Madam de Montespan. Philippe would later serve as regent for Louis XV until he came of age.

Charles was born at l'Hotel Saint-Pol in Paris which was at that time a royal residence which was later abandoned and sold off by King Francis I. Located beside it was l'église Saint-Paul-des-Champs .The church was closed in 1793 and demolished in 1799,nothing now remains of either.

December 10
1489- Birth of Gaston of Foix, Duke of Nemours. His mother Marie D'Orleans was the elder sister of Louis XII of France (both children of Charles, Duke of Orleans who was a grandson of Charles V of France). Gaston had one older sister Germaine who was the second wife of Ferdinand of Aragon. He was a well known French military commander. He died in 1512 in the Battle of Ravenna in Italy.
1508- death of Renee II, Duke of Lorraine. In 1528 his son Claude was made Duke of Guise (first person not a prince of the blood to be made a duke in the French peerage). Claude was the father of Mary of Guise, wife of James V of Scotland making Renee the great-grandfather of Mary, Queen of Scots. Renee was Duke of Bar, inherited it from his maternal grandfather. He also inherited a claim to the throne of Naples and Jeruselum from his mother Yolande. Naples instead was claimed by Charles VIII.

Renee II, Duke of Lorraine was buried at l'Église des Cordeliers de Nancy which was the ducal burial site ,his wife Philippa de Gueldre joined him there in 1547.
Sadly the Ducal tombs were desecrated in 1793 during the Revolution.

At time of his birth he was not destined to be King of France ,the son of Jeanne d'Albret and Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme was named in honour of his maternal grandfather ,Henri II of Navarre.
His godparents at his Roman Catholic baptism were :
Henri II de Navarre (Grandfather)
Henri II de France
Catherine de Médicis
Isabeau d'Albret,Viscountess de Rohan (Great aunt)
The ceremony was carried out by his paternal uncle, the Cardinal de Bourbon.

Maria and Henri were married by proxy at the Duomo in Florence in October 1600,the bride came with a dowry of 600,000 crowns which was welcome news to a bankrupt French Monarchy.
Henri's 1st marriage to Marguerite de Valois was dissolved in December 1599.
