Good,two important regions!

Only Queen Maxima in this working visit:

"King Willem-Alexander will not participate in the working visit to California and Texas, which will take place from September 6-9, 2022. This was decided on medical advice. The King is recovering from pneumonia ,air travel can hinder a full recovery from pneumonia. Work in the Netherlands can continue, albeit on a more limited scale. "

I do hope the King make a swift and full recovery from the pneumonia. Meanwhile, I am sure the Queen will do a fine job of representing the King on the trip.

Apparently the king was coughing quite a bit during his visit to Ter Apel (center of the asylum seekers crisis in the Netherlands) yesterday and explained it was because of pneumonia. Otherwise people would surely have been concerned about him spreading Covid.

I'm sure the queen will do a marvelous job and wishing the king a speedy recovery!

I wish the King a good recovery. Certainly Queen Maxima will do a good job representing the King.

In most countries these visits aren't done by the royal couple themselves but by either a younger sibling or the heir. Given that Amalia is to start university study, it makes sense that they aren't sending her yet but I expect that in the future she might be tasked with these type of trips - just like for example Guillaume is doing them for Luxembourg.

So, no problem at all that the head of state is not participating. Sending the queen is still a pretty high representation. The only other country in which they have done comparable visits seems to be Germany in which the king and queen made sure the visit the various parts (Bundesländer) since the inauguration.

According to the previous schedule there were a few times when the king and queen were expected to have different activities, so those might need to be rescheduled:
- Wednesday: the king was expected to visit Berkeley University while the queen has a business visit to a Dutch company
- Thursday: the king was to visit Fort Hood a military training center where Dutch military have been trained for decades, while the queen would visit the Hogg Foundation - focused on mental health.
- Friday: a discussion on coast protection for the king and a lunch for business women followed by two medical-oriented visits for the queen.

It would have been good for the Princess of Orange to attend this visit . I could see her for example benefitting from the visit to Berklee as she would encounter university students much like herself.

Queen Maxima has arrived in San Francisco today:

The weather will be a factor - it is unbearably hot in the Bay Area right now. The temperature in my backyard was 106F, and a friend of mine had 115 on her thermometer just 10 miles further south. It's miserable - still over 90 at 10 p.m.

Wonderful to hear Queen Máxima giving such a spontaneous reply in English and Spanish (from 4:00 minutes onwards).

The trip seems off to a great start. Queen Máxima shined as we knew she would!

Kudos to Mayor Breed for rolling out the red carpet and giving the Queen such a warm welcome. I like the hoisting of the Dutch flag at city hall and her accompanying the Queen throughout the Castro visit.

Rare occasion of having so many Queens in one spot ;-)

She IS fabulous!!Nonesuch!! Really, there is nonesuch!

Queen Máxima looks so much better with the hair up. I think she would have worn a hat when accompanying the King. Now the head-of-state is not there, the protocol is somewhat scaled down: also the ladies in the Queen's escorte wore no hats.

At all similar regional visits with the King, the Queen and the ladies in her escorte wire hats. But it really, really is so neat with a nice updo.

I was wondering about this and couldn’t remember if hats were a requirement. She looks fine with very good hair. It would have looked odd.

Hats are no requirement (see Queen Letizia) but when Máxima is accompanying her husband then she steps up a bit.

See earlier events in the USA:

At the White House, accompanying her spouse = with hat and jewels

The mission continues in Austin, Texas, today, September 8, and the day started with a meeting with Governor Greg Abbott:

She's happy with the cowboy boots :D

Lovely pictures!

Liesje Schreinemacheris stunning and all too often reminded me of the young Queen herself.

According to the NOS Máxima discussed abortion with the Governor of Texas expressing that the Dutch delegation supports choice for women and specifically the importance it attaches to the right of a safe abortion.

This is very political but members of the Royal House do not need to be impartial. They just need to be backed by the Government.

What Queen Máxima told might sound partial in Anglo-Saxon ears but is completely in line with the the policy pursued by the Netherlands' Government.

Good for her! As an American woman- I feel as though it is a basic human rights issue.

Queen Máxima has always championed the upward mobility of women whether through education or financial inclusion. As such it does makes sense for her to mention abortion rights as it affects women in many ways especially economically.
