The Countess of Sutherland, the 24th holder of a peerage created in 1235, died in London on 9 December, four days after 50th death anniversary of her youngest son.
The countess, one of Scotland's biggest landowners, was seated at Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, and House of Tongue, by Lairg, Sutherland. Her London home was in Edwardes Square.
She was born Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland Leveson-Gower on 30 March 1921 as the only child of Major Lord Alastair St Clair Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1890-1921; he died just three days after she was born) & his wife Elizabeth Helene Demarest (died 1931) [daughter of Warren Gardener Demarest, of New York, United States].
Her grandfather was Cromartie Leveson-Gower, the 4th Duke of Sutherland, KG (1851-191). She succeeded as 2th Countess of Sutherland and Lady Strathnaver on the death of her paternal uncle George Grainville Leveson-Gower, the 5th Duke of Sutherland, on 1 Feb, 1963.
Elizabeth Sutherland-Leveson-Gower [who later assumed the surname of Sutherland only] married on 5 January 1946 Captain Charles Noel Janson (died 15 June, 2006) [son of Captain Charles Wilfrid Janson, of Wilton Crescent, Belgravia] by whom she had three sons: twins Alistair and Martin (b.1947; they will turn 73 on 7 January) and Matthew (who died in 1969, aged 14) and a daughter, Lady Annabel (b.6 May 1952).
The Earldom of Sutherland and Lordship of Strathnaver now pass to her eldest son 9elder twin), Alistair Charles St Clair Sutherland, styled Lord Strathnaver.

Small correction, her father died almost a month after her birth.
Elizabeth was born March 30. Her father who had been hunting in Rhodesia and contacted Malaria, died on April 28th. Still horribly sad he died less then a month after she was born.
She was an orphan by 10. Her mother remarried but died 3 months after her wedding. Elizabeth was raised by her Uncle George, the Duke of Sutherland, after her mother's death.
The title Duke of Sutherland was a title though in the peerage of GB which meant it could only be inherited by a man. When Geordie (what her Uncle was known as) died, the title of Duke went to a very distant cousin John Egerton, who was Earl of Ellesmere (the sad fait of titles in an attempt to promote male inheritance). John also died childless and went to one of his distant cousins, the current Duke.
While the senior title went to the Earl of Ellesmere, he got nothing else. The land and Dunrobin castle went to Elizabeth. Though shortly used for a school, Dunrobin remains a private house for the family, though the grounds are open to the public.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunrobin_Castle
Elizabeth was not only Countess of Sutherland, she was Chief of Clan Sutherland. It is why she dropped the last two parts of her name. It was required of her to be chief, that she only carried Sutherland.
She was pre-deceased not only by her son, but by her husband Charles in 2006 (he was a journalist) and by a grandson James. James died this year in September. He was a member of a Kurdish group the YPG and was arrested in 2018 for possible terrorism. He was still awaiting trial when he committed suicide.
