He kind of acts like her '(little) man' . I also saw him opening the door of her car for her and carrying home the grocery they bought at the supermarket. He's really very protective of her. On the beach lying in the sand he caresses her and jumps to fetch things whenever she wants something. Maybe he doesn't want her to suffer from badly-ending relationships anymore.
That's really sweet, and it's good to know she's still has someone there for her after losing her father and the badly-ending relationships that she's been through.
