The Fail again attempting to create some drama where there isn't any! These so called journos are guessing about a Harry/Meghan Royal tour in September and making it seem as if they are raining on the younger couple's parade.

We don't know what other engagements members of the BRF have in September that can't be put off. However, we do know that the Queen goes up to Balmoral in August and spends most of September up there in recent years. Eugenie knows this, Jack knows this. IMO they (as did Harry and Meghan) preferred to make arrangements when Eugenie's very elderly grandparents are back at Windsor and there's only a negligible distance to move from Castle home to Chapel for the ceremony.

If grandma has a hard time to come around the idea that her not so intelligent grandson is marrying into the royal family, I wonder why she didn't pay attention the last 7 years. Dating a princess is a pretty clear sign that that could be in the cards...

And it is said tgat she only met Eugenie a few weeks ago for lunch (probably to share the engagement news) for the first time. Rather late I'd say but of course it is all DM, so could be completely made up.

I don't quite get the "no september" thing just because The Queen is in Scotland. It's her granddaughters wedding, she only has to come down for the weekend.

In September the Queen will be 92 years old and Philip will be 97. They won't want to jaunt down to Windsor for the weekend from Balmoral. It is over 500 miles-travel at their age is tiring-even by plane.

If they really wanted September they could have chosen Edinburgh for the wedding. That's only a 100 mile trip from Balmoral.

That whole article was weird though--what grandmother would tell a reporter "He’s a charming boy and all that but not the most intelligent and I would never have thought this would happen.”

:previous: She is a proud granny. Its not like she watched them for seven years and doubted they would get married. Its like when your son becomes an Olympic athlete and you think 'wow I never thought my son would win gold'. Because the mom is picturing the little boy playing t-ball and never expected he would be on the Olympic baseball team. I doubt very few parents, or grannies, would dream their child/grandchild would marry royalty. Unless you are royalty. She is just surprised her 'ordinary' grandson actually fell in love with a princess, the male Cinderella story.

As for the lunch, I didn't take it as it was the first time she met Eugenie. Simply that she mentioned her grandson and Eugenie had come to lunch. Eugenie spoke of how close she had come to the family in 7 years. I have little doubt she had met granny over the years.

DM of course trying to cause issues with the whole tour thing :bang:

The 92 year old woman and her 97 year old husband (at the time of the wedding) ONLY have to try down from Scotland for a weekend? Yes, that does sound more reasonable then waiting a few weeks for an October wedding.

Thinking of my Nana, actually I can imagine her saying just that

This is a 91 year old granny, who is obviously very happy for her grandson. She was just saying her grandson was just an ordinary kid, not the kind of person you'd expect to land a princess.

Maybe so, but it didn't seem very nice to me. A grandmother basically telling reporters she thinks her grandson is not very intelligent.

This is a 91 year old woman who may or may not be as sharp as the queen is at that age (many are no where near). She likely didn't think twice about saying something to a reporter. Its nothing a lot of grandparents don't say about their kids or grandkids honestly. Work in medical clinics and hospitals with seniors, and you will hear plenty. Unfortunately she just said it to reporters.

I highly doubt she meant he was stupid. Or as an insult. But just that he is 'just her grandson', nothing special. He isn't some highly educated successful lawyer or something you might expect to be rubbing elbows with a princess and marrying her. Its hard for her to imagine her grandson, who she probably saw playing with worms as a kid, is marrying a royal.

I would also imagine that this is a woman that is going to be very, very excited to meet the Queen. I wouldn't be surprised if she takes it to the Grandmazilla level. Everything needs to be just perfect. She's meeting the Queen.

Its kind of neat when you think about it. Both grandmothers are 91 and both are on equal footing when it comes to being related to the couple getting married. She's got to be the envy of every person that she knows and talks to. I could imagine my grandmother at that age hardly being able to contain herself in her excitement and my grandmother lived to be 95 and was as sharp as a tack until the day she died.

I think if grandparents wanted to be there then they would be there no matter their age. Its not like the 2 of them don't travel already.
If Eugenie wanted September I don't think anyone's schedule should interfere with it especially if there isn't anything particularly going on. I hope it's not true they had to postpone for that reason.

Sorry but still don’t see the issue right now, they both travel in the finest of luxury and a trip down to Windsor for a long weekend perhaps wouldn’t be that taxing. Eugenia shouldn’t have her wedding dates dictated by the fact her grandparents (and only her grandparents) spend September in Scotland.

It’s not like they’re travelling on horse and cart down to London....

LoL that's exactly what I was going to say but you did it so much better. Just seems like not wanting to stop a vacation imo. People in their 90s are able to travel.

People sometimes make "candid" comments when they are 91, but, having said that, it is the DM and we don't know the context of that comment.

Going back to a question I asked in another thread, I wonder though if the granny's comments also reflect the frequent (though by no means necessarily accurate) assumption nowadays that a male from Jack's social class who probably didn't excel academically in school and never went to university must be "not very bright".

In any case, under that assumption, none of the members of the Queen's family would be considered particularly "bright", as, if I am not mistaken, they were all mediocre students and many of them (Anne, Andrew, Harry, etc.) don't have university degrees either. William and the York girls were actually the best in that category as they graduated from university with the equivalent in the US to a B average perhaps.

Thanks so much for saying this. Academic success, being "bright" or not, intelligence and capability are all very different things. I know lots of academically successful people that struggle to work with people or to take risks or to learn hands on skills. We all have something we excellent at and things at which we are inept.

Jack seems a fine chappie! Plus she loves him and he seems to love her. A recipe for life success!

Indeed, Jack is definitely not slow and I think any woman in love would be happy if her man looks at her the same way Jack looks at Eugenie.

I think his grandma was just joking. Eugenie, by all accounts, is a young lady of substance and I expect that she would be attracted to someone similar. I thought Jack was darling in that interview, quite handsome, articulate, and sweet and clearly besotted with his bride-to-be.

I think it would be adorable if Maud Windsor would be a bridesmaid, and it would also be nice to see Viscount Severn as a page boy as it seems that Eugenie is friendly with the Wessexes as IIRC Lady Louise is particularly close with her. I suspect there will also be someone from Jack's family chosen (perhaps one of the Branson grandchildren), and maybe a child of their friends if they have children. It wouldn't surprise me if Beatrice was chosen as the maid of honour either.

I agree! :flowers:

Or, a nice bridal party would be Beatrice as MoH, and Jack's brother Thomas as Best Man.
Then pair Savannah Phillips with Viscount Severn, and Maud Windsor with Prince George.

That way they'd have a range of ages.

Page boys seem to be a similar age. James and George are pretty far apart. I also don't see George being a page boy in both weddings this year.

MOH and Best man: Thomas Brooksbank and Princess Beatrice

page boys: James, Viscount Severn and Vinze Makim (may be a nickname, older son of Seamus Makim. Seamus is Fergie's nephew, he was in the York wedding as a page boy). They seem similar age.

flower girls: Isla Philips and Maude Windsor- 5/6 years old, good age pair.

I could also see either Etta Andrews or Eva Branson (Richard Branson's granddaughters) as younger flower girls. They will be 3 at the wedding. Perhaps there is another friend or family member with a little girl of similar age to be paired with one of them. Nice to see a Brooksbank side included. Or even use Mia. Zara and Peter were both in Sarah's bridal party.

No, I meant pair George with Maud and James with Savannah.
Boy-Girl.

That's how they did it at Andrew's wedding, paired William with Laura Fellowes.

Otherwise, it wouldn't look nice , having George and James walking together.
I think the Boy-Girl pairings are better than 2 girls together, or two page boys.

There are two approaches pair a boy and girl with similar aged partner like Andrew and Sarah’s wedding or have a pair of older boys with a mix of girls like Charles and Diana, William and Kate.

You have a handful of different age girls between the older Louise, Margarita, slightly younger Savannah and Isla and then the 3 to 5 year old crowd of Mia, Maud, Charlotte. There are probably some Kent and Gloucester grandkids that you can throw into the potential pool plus non royal godchildren are always an option.

Yes, that's what I meant!
At Prince Andrew's wedding they had four pairs, Boy-Girl, and it looked nice.

I really hope they go with that first option, because I like it better.
But of course, Eugenie and Jack are not likely to consult me.

I think it would be nice to have Beatrice acting in the role of Pippa for her sisters wedding; the only adult attendant and leading the really young kids.

I think they should be more imaginative with wedding venues. I'm fed up with Westminster Abbey and St George's Chapel.

I think the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace would be an excellent choice for a change.

It would certainly make for a small, intimate wedding. The guest list would be tiny since there is only seating for 100 people.

I'm sure the Chapel Royal would be a splendid venue. Only problem is that most likely, using that chapel, the guest list would have to be severely limited or people would be packed in like sardines.

Westminster and St George's are used often for very practical reasons-

1. size
2. proximity to a royal palace for a reception venue

The chapel royal is quite small. St George's is small for Harry's wedding and much larger then the chapel royal is. I would have loved for him to marry at the cathedral near highgrove and use highgrove for the reception, but not shocked they didn't.

Eugenie on the other hand has grown up at Windsor. Before she went to Marlborough, she attended St George's school, Windsor which supplies the choir to the chapel. Its her home church.

There isn't a descent size church near either Balmoral or Sandringham to use.

Zara had approx 400 guests so not exactly a small wedding, although about half what Meghan and Harry could invite to theirs at St. George's. It wasn't at Balmoral though--it was at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh with the reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

400 is quite small for a royal wedding. Even smaller then her brother's which was private as well. Edward and Charles (second) were considered small and were closer to 600. Eugenie's will be around that size most likely.
