White? That woman is such an embarrasment.

It seems I have to apologise to Mrs B. The audience was a suprise one. His Holiness heard she was in the Vatican and invited her for a private audience so she didn't have time to change.

Even though it was a surprise, she still would have had time to change. According to this article she exercised the "privilege du blanc" even though she is not a Queen. That's pretty offensive. She has worn black in the past (apparently), so why not now? Anyway, the article could be wrong since it mentions Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte as one of the monarchs who can wear white, and she is no longer with us.

Apparantly, Mrs Blair was in the Vatican giving a speech to seminarians when she got a message saying that the Pope could see her for 10 minutes but she'd have to go there and then so really, she didn't have time to change. It was just unfortunate that she happened to be wearing white on that day. I loathe the woman but she was in the right on this occassion.

Polfoto 18-05-2006 Workers prepare Poland's holiest shrine and pilgrimage place of Jasna Gora for the following week's visit of Pope Benedict XVI, in Czestochowa, Poland on Thursday, May 18, 2006. Dozens of thousands are expected for the May 26 prayer that the Pope is to lead at the 14th century Pauline monks cloister that house the holy icon of the Black Madonna. Benedict will be in Poland, the homeland of the late Pope John Paul II, from between May 25 and 28

That might be true technically but I wonder if it was not foreseeable that maybe the pope would ask her to come and see him? If protocoll is so strict I would never wear white in the vatican in case I came across the pope by chance. And I'm not even a catholic...

OTOH Joseph Ratzinger has never been one to be too keen on protocoll and formalities, so I don't think he minded much, especially as he knew that Mrs. Blair had no time to change. But maybe officials should have a black mantilla and some sort of overdress ready for a case like that, because it is not pleasant for the guest to be confronted with the pictures of such a faux pas.

The thing is, Cherie would have had a black outfit with her just in case something happened in the UK and she had to come back in black.

Warsaw, POLAND: Pope Benedict XVI blesses the crowd after landing at the International Airport of Okecie in Warsaw, 25 May 2006. The Pontiff arrived in Warsaw for a four-day visit in Poland that will take him to key places in the life and papacy of his predecessor, John Paul II, as well as to the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau
