I read only 12 people turned up to welcome him and some reporter had to make signs for them to hold, that can't be right can it?

Prince William's official January 2010 trip to New Zealand-itinerary

Sunday, 17 January: Auckland, New Zealand
  • Arrival on private flight around noon. The welcoming committee includes Governor-General, Sir Anand Satyanand, and New Zealand's Prime Minister, John Key.
  • Tour of construction site for Eden Park, a signature rugby stadium to be opened in 2011 and which will serve as the heart of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Meeting with members of All Blacks team. Watching rugby players.
  • Boarding of New Zealand yacht at Auckland harbor. New Zealand won the 1999-2000 series America's Cup, and this was a trial boat for that event. The Prince will sail out into the harbor as part of or guest to the crew.
  • Hangi (feast with food cooked in traditional Maori fashion, using hot stones in the ground). This event will be at the Governor-General’s Residence, Government House, in Auckland. The Prince will meet several young New Zealanders.
Monday, 18 January: Wellington, New Zealand's capital
  • Visit to the National War Memorial to lay a wreath for fallen members of the New Zealand Armed Services, inspection of 100-strong Guard of Honour and 21-gun salute fired by the New Zealand Army
  • Traditional Maori welcome (hongi, or pressing of noses) at new Supreme Court building. Tour of building, address in the new court room, and unveiling of commemorative plaque. Possible meeting with public outside. Here, he acts as representative of Queen Elizabeth.
  • Private lunch with judges and members of the government.
  • Visit to wildlife sanctuary. Meeting with a kiwi and with members of the local Maori iwi (clan, or tribe).
  • Barbeque hosted by Mr. Key, the New Zealand Prime Minister. Meeting with more young New Zealanders and friends/acquaintances from his previous visit to New Zealand in 2005.
Tuesday, 19 January: Wellington, New Zealand
  • Visit to children's wards at Wellington Children's Hospital. Unveiling of commemorative plaque.
  • Leave-taking of Governor-General and Prime Minister at Wellington Airport, followed by Royal New Zealand Air Force flight to Australia.

Well, there were certainly more than a dozen people there.
I don't think it's fair for them to compare this trip with the Queen's trip many many years ago. The video footage shows when the Queen and Philip did a walkabout through the community. William hasn't done anything like that. And I think security is really tight, which is understandable.

Another thing to remember that it is summer down under and waiting around in the hot sun to see some foreign prince is not high on the agenda for a lot of people - going to the beach or a pool is a much higher priority.

Many people are still on their summer holidays as well, with schools in both countries still on their summer breaks (not returning in most cases until next week or even the first week in February)

I am sure that when he is an area where the public can see him that there will be crowds there.

Awesome pics Iceflower! I'm amazed that he doesn't even look jet lagged. And to go straight into his visits. It looks like he has a busy schedule. Thanks Michael1992.
