Crown Prince Frederik (R) and Crown Princess Mary (back) of Denmark look at works of art by the Queen of Denmark at the official opening of the Wild Swans Exhibition, Meridian International Center in Washington DC, USA, 03 June 2010. The exhibition features artwork created by Queen Margrethe of Denmark, including the Queen's decoupages and costume designs used in Jacob Joergensen's film 'The Wild Swans'. It is the first time for the Queen's artwork to be exhibited in the United States.

why THIS school ? who invited them and what was the purpose of today's visit?
thanks.
For a year the children in 5th grade at John Eaton’s Elementary School have been studying Denmark and Danish society, culture and history as part of the Embassy Adoption Program.......The Embassy Adoption Program is a global education program, which pairs area embassies with fifth and sixth grade classrooms to engage students in cultural and international enrichment activities.....John Eaton Elementary School is the Embassy of Denmark’s ‘adopted’ school for the school year 2009/2010.

I just love what her hair stylist has done with her fringe. Theres a light wave to it. Very chic and sets her face off beautifully.

She seems to be wearing the Georg Jensen "Daisy" brooch in her hair, the same brooch that Victoria wore on a white dress at the lunch reception for Queen Margrethe recently. I think it is a nice tribute to Margrethe at this exhibition of her art. (The "Daisy" series of jewellry was created in Margrethe's honour when she was a child or something like that. Don't remember the exact details. Also Margrethe's nickname is Daisy.)

I too noticed that. Quite the lovely gesture towards her mother in-law.

Lovely pictures so far, the weather is being good to them.

Mary looks very suntanned. Does anyone know what the temp is in Washington?

Mary looks very suntanned. Does anyone know what the temp is in Washington?

Yes she does, its in the high 20's - low 30's.
The busy agenda they couple had yesterday I doubt she had anytime to tan

I was just wondering because of her choice of dress and skirts.
I imagine the suntan has come from her recent holiday.

The paper Jyllands Posten has a photoseries as well: http://foto.jp.dk/fotosite_albumview.php?serie=1042
From the visit it the school.

And an article: http://jp.dk/blitz/kongelige/article2087566.ece

Kejseren uden klæder på amerikansk - the emperor without clothes in American.
Written by Jørgen Ullerup. JP's US correspondent.

Well, the visit has at least led to ten year old Christian Calhoun, to declare that he will now pursue a career within the windmill industry.
The pupils at the school has for a year leading up to this visit had Denmark as a theme, now culminating with the visit by M&F.
Mary admitted she knew very little about Denmark, when she met Frederik, but stated that it's important to learn about other cultures because it can inspire and provide new ideas in how we can enrich our lives.
Mary also touched the subject about obesity among children, a subject Michelle Obama is also involved in.

The children had split up in groups and each group performed something in relation to Denmark. All of that ending up in all the children singing in Danish and as the journalist observed: "It may be debatable what an American child will achieve by singing: "Så går vi rundt om en enebærbusk", but the sang sounded beautiful, exposed to American accent".

And the conservative newspaper Berlinske Tidende has a gallery and an article as well: http://www.berlingske.dk/billeder/kronprinseparret-paa-skolebesoeg-i-washington-dc

This appears to become a very well-covered visit.

http://www.berlingske.dk/danmark/bare-hele-verden-var-som-danmark

In this article, eleven year old Charlene, she was the one in folk costume who presented flowers to Mary, confided to our reporter, David Trads: "They were just so sweet. We've learned so much about Denmark. How you are so green and how you help the weak. If just the whole world was like Denmark". - Well, thank you, Charlene. Unfortunately it isn't that rosy.

And in honour of Frederik perhaps, four boys impersonated four Danish football players. (*) One of the boys, Gavin aged eleven, stated: "I think Denmark will beat Holland on the 14. June". (**)

Eleven year old Grace had a good impression of the Danish welfare system and that may explain why we are considered the happiest people in the world. (***)

(*) Real football. Not the American version, where you grab an oddly shaped ball and carry it along the field and taking a break every two minuttes. Genuine football.... :p

(**) Thank you, Gavin. Now we only need to convince the players. They complain that the balls behave oddly in the thin air and that the African spectators toot annoyingly in plastic horns. :whistling:

(***) Yeah, yeah, yeah. I Know. It's a hotly contested subject for debate in USA, but that's what she said.

---------------------------

And wouldn't you know, we have even more from BT: http://www.bt.dk/royale/wintanas-eventyrli...f-frede-og-mary

From Sitar Arts Center.

This time a sweet little story about ten year old Wintana, who after having waited for months got a pic M&F on her phone. She said: "It's just like a real fairytale". And she continues: "(It was) the greatest experience of my life. - It was much, much better than I dared hope for. - The Princess was just so beautiful. But she was also sweet. And suddenly I wasn't nervous at all. We just talked. She said our centre was fantastic. And now I feel an even bigger desire to work on our art. And one day I hope we can visit Denmark".

The Sitar Arts Center is there for the benefit of the less wealthy families of Washington DC.

http://www.bt.dk/royale/vores-boern-er-rimeligt-kreative

And as a follow up: In response to questions from journalists Mary and Frederik said that in their opinion American and Danish children are equally creative. (*)
They said about Christian and Bella: "They paint and dance. They are reeeeasonably creative (**)

(*) As all children on the planet, fortunately, are.

(**) I'll bet you fifteen bananas that was Frederik's words! Interjecting the word "rimelig = reasonable" in that sentence and in that way, is very Danish and typical of Frederik.

Yes right now it's really hot in DC. It's 86F.
I was wondering that too because she does look tanned.

Thanks everyone for all the photos. I love how we are getting great detail photos of hair and jewels! Mary has looked perfect IMO, and I noticed too how she has some color, maybe she uses a good fake tan cream, we have some great natural ones in US! I wish I were in DC, although I can tell you it is Hot there at this time of year and probably very humid!

Mary went from lighter to darker very quickly it seems, I think she may have had a spray tan. She wouldn't sunbake anyway would she?:flowers:

Maybe she's preparing her skin for the white house visit, might be wearing white again.

I'm very pleased that the Crown Couple visited Walter Reed Hospital, I'm sure the patients and staff appreciated their interest and concern.:flowers:

I'd have thought it more suitable to have their photo taken infront of a portrait of HM the Queen, and not a contemporary portrait of the President of the United States. It is afterall the Danish Embassy, which makes it Danish territory.

The portrait of Obama was done by a Danish artist hence the reason for them posing in front of that particular portrait. Love Mary's outfits and hairstyles thus far.

That would of course make sense as to why they would be photographed infront of the portrait. I still think a portrait of HM the Queen would have been a more appropriate setting, personally.

But, I think I'll live ;)

Thank you, Lancchick :flowers:

A more serious part of their visit was Walter Reed. The hospital has treated more than 1.000 seriously wounded soldiers since 2001. Of those more than 10% return to active military duty. - Some in the frontline.

Sergeant Baldwyn, who is well featured in this clip, was wounded in Afghanistan and he is determined to return to his unit by 2012.

The soldiers are retrained to a level that can be compared to sports athletes.

Frederik said afterwards that you leave this hospital in a positive mood, because you sense the pride, strength and determination of the patient, despite what they have been through. A thoughtprovoking visit.

- It is in line with the experiences with wounded Danish soldiers, who are treated at Rigshospitalet. They have astonished the doctors, who until recent years had little experience with severe wartrauma, by recovering much faster and much more determined than "ordinary" patients. The significanse of "comradeship" is also important, as the soldiers encourage each other. - Civillian patients lack that back-up.
Based no doubt on experiences from Walter Reed and elsewhere the Danish military encourage wounded and invalided soldiers to train to and if possibly become a handicapped athlete.

I guess we are going to see a lot of ex-soldiers at the upcoming Olympics for Handicapped.

The first Danish female soldier was killed in combat in Afghanistan this week. Women constitute about 5% of the battalion there.
You will see her colleagues from the Guards Hussars escort QMII & PH through the streets of Aarhus today.

Mary's hair has really been stunning! I have so enjoyed all the photos and videos. The visit seems much more interesting than I thought it would be! Thanks friends!

thanks everyone for keeping us updated on the trip, it doesn't seem to have got much american media coverage, so i appreciate it's difficult to find pictures and videos.

does mary travel with her hairdresser? she seems to be sporting very professional hair-do's.

i really liked the picture of mary patting the dog at the soldier health centre :)

I am sure she does travel with her hairrdresser, I read onc some where that when they travel they go like 16 other people as staff

16 staff people to travel with?!?! Does that include their security detail? Goodness.

The American media for some reason doesn't cover the Danish royals, unless it is a blurb or so about a wedding or funeral. Especially right now with all this oil in the Gulf and the media storm around that.
