On this occasion Charlene did definitely look better than Steph, and her outfit was more suited for the event. So now Charlene arrives at events together with the family...interesting...
My first impression was the same since the caption and article stated it was a gala event. But, after looking at more pictures like this one, compared to how other people are dressed at the event (some even have on shorts), Stephanie’s attire seems appropriate for the occasion and Charlene is over dressed (in my opinion). Who's dressed appropriately or not doesn’t really matter anymore in Monaco; it seems that we are entering a new defining era of protocol and glamour in Monaco. I'm learning that once I lower my expectations, it becomes a little more enjoyable to watch. Here are more pictures from Wenn.

Yes, soon it will be the waiters that are best dressed. I already mentioned at the ballet that people were told that they weren't dressed appropriately because of the presence of the prince, but then again neither was he :D I am surprised that a lot of people are attending with regular suits rather then dinner jackets. But then again I don't know how it was announced as gala or as a concert with dinner. I think that is the main problem. On the other hand maybe it is not so important that the people are dressed well, but that they are willing to pay to support a cause. I am sure that Steph doesn't mind what people were wearing as long as many people attend to support the cause. There is an article in todays paper with parts of her answers at the press conference.

Thanks Michelle your Pictures give a different view Stephanie seems to be making a effort to get to know Charlene really great pictures.

steph needs to stop tanning NOW OMG hope it was just an overdone sprayon not actual sun damage:ohmy: it really looks like albert is losing weight and charlene is wearing a beautiful dress (perhaps a more summery color would have been my choice) but with no halter or tube top in sight i'm going to overlook that. not sure about the shoes- need a better photo before i'll commit:lol: (nope i don't like them) Steph smiled, tried and showed up and i applaud her for that. i sure would have loved being a fly on the wall at the greeting before the entrance.

FAM is steph's charity, so they want to show now that she's accepted by the family and that at least steph approves of her. The Bunte article and caro's comments generated a quick reaction. Don't think steph's dreadfull outfit is a mistake, i think that whoever put this together, wanted charlene to stand out, and gave her a better oufit, no purple dress this time but we know she would have worn it if given to her. IMO, steph makes a big error by showing off with her bro's (fill the blanks), it makes her look ridiculous, just like her brother. So she is part of the game too, at least we know that much. It doesn't look like she grew up and is able to say No to her bro.

albert looking like an 80 year old, charlene taller than him. Great shots, what can I say, they are such a perfect match....

let's brace ourselves for next week at the red cross ball. can't wait to see caro's face, even though, I have to say I really hope she will stay away from this.

.

That would imply that someone actually told Stephanie what to wear. :ermm: Emmm , no . She picks her clothes herself. I'm afraid most of you guys read too much of their own thaughts into this.

albert looking like an 80 year old, charlene taller than him. OMG, terrible picture.

FAM is Steph's charity for which she had worked very hard for many years. She was supposed to be a center of attention that night and not Charlene. I do understand that Steph wanted her brother to be with he to show his support, but it seems that she expected Charlene to stay at home for once. PA is making a mistake for loosing insides of when it's OK to bring Charlene with him and when to tell her to stay at home and watch TV. If he wants to flaunt her around and take a spotlight from people who deserved it just so he can be a center of attention by bringing Charlene with him, he should have a guts and present Charlene as his girlfriend at least, or announce an engagement if he is so much in love that he can't stand to be separated from her for one evening. The way he did it it was an insult to Steph and her hard work! I mean bringing "Charlene Wittstock the swimmer" and taking the spotlight from Steph and more importantly HER charity.

As for the dress code, from the way other guest were dressed it doesn't seem like a gala event but more like a casual dinner with a concert event. I must say Steph's outfit might be appropriate for the occasion, but it was dreadful. On the other hand Charlene's dress seems beautiful, but like usual a way, way overdressed. It is obvious that she had put an effort to outshine Steph. Charlene even went to that extend to have her hair professionally done, which she doesn't do even for the bigger events. So annoying, no wonder look on the Stephs face. Poor girl instead enjoying her hard work and success she was put in a position where she had to ignore Charlene's presence through out the night without being impolite. JMO

I am starting to be more annoyed by PA then Charlene. He should know better!

I'm not Charlene biggest fan, or her fan at all, but isn't it excessive to criticize her for dressing nicely and having her hair done? If anything I hope she keeps doing so at every event she happens to attend in the future.
As per the outfits, I didn't find Charlene overdoing or Steph's one appropriate: regardless of how those who attended decided to dress, the dinner was held in a fancy place, at the presence of a Sovereign, so Charlene's dress, black but short, a kind of cocktail dress, was in my opinion a perfectly good choice; the others, who were dressed as if they were having a pizza with friends, chose wrong...again, JMO.

I think you are really off the beat here. No one tells Steph what to wear. She makes her own choices. Personally I like the colour and pattern of the top but I could do without whatever she is wearing over it. It would have been much nicer without it. This way she looks like someone desperately trying to look like a youngster which she isn't and I don't think that she is aiming at that. It just looks like it. Also I don't think we should smell conspiracy at every action. I don't think that Steph is the kind of person who fears being up or down staged by Charlene or anyone else for that matter. She is there for a cause that she is dedicating a lot of work into and that is all that matters to her and that those who came to have a good time left having had exactly that. You should read what she says in Monaco matin about the Roi de soleil evening and what she wanted to achieve. I think quite frankly that this particular evening she couldn't care less about whom her brother was bringing on a date. And maybe she might not be too displeased at the publicity that Charlenes presence will generate for this evening since it is so briefly before the red cross and its surrounding events...

Besides if you watched the video, Albert entered with Steph and Charlene was a few steps behind. Only for the photo op Albert asked her to join in. So it is quite clear who held which position last night.

I agree. Stephanie's not the kind of person to stay back and shut up if something's bugging her. She may seem quite reserved in public but she's also very direct and know's what she wants and how she wants it. She's not a puppet on a string , in fact noone in this family is.

Yeah steph is very strong minded even her mom said that she tells it like it is thats why everyone likes her she is just herself honest about everything .

I think that Stephanie, as a serious advocate for the fight against AIDS, appreciates Charlene's presence because this signifies the latter's support. This is a Princess who did not mind stripping down for a nude pic to raise funds for her charity, so any help is very much welcome.

Stephanie, who knows the power of publicity, is aware that having Charlene there will intensify the media coverage of her event which is good for FAM. And as a mature and compassionate woman, she would have separated her appreciation of Charlene's efforts and presence from her own opinions of Charlene as her irreplaceable mother's successor.

As for Charlene's attire, I would much prefer to be overdressed than underdressed. I feel she dressed appropriately. Unfortunately, she seems to be in the "damned if I do, damned if I don't" category.

FAM always had very good media coverage, and steph has attracted plenty of celebrities throughout the years and campained for FAM so i don't see why she would need the 'publicity help' and 'support' from her brother's girlfriend (cause other than that who is charlene?). It is another good occasion for charene to be parraded arround and be publicly in the presence of a family member at a major event. As hola noted, this is the first time charlene attends this charity gala, so the honor is more for her to be invited there not for stephanie to have her as a guest.
I really see charlene's presence and media coverage as a publicity campaign and help for her, not for albert, his sisters, etc let alone for the actual event she attends.

I do not agree with you on this one. I believe that Steph knew very well what kind of event she is attending, after all she is the one orginizing it. Charlene's dress is not just another cocktail dress, if it was that would certainly be OK. Her dress was way to fancy for the occasion no matter who is attending. There was to much lace and embroidery to be just another cocktail dress. Her hair was overdone as well. It really doesn't matter where event was held. You could be invited to the White House for a barbecue, and that doesn't mean that you should show up in a business suit.

As for the PA/Sovereign being present that isn't big deal any more since he has been showing up in any/every occasion in Monaco. His presence has become nothing special. As someone said before pretty soon he will be attending openings of every food stand in Monaco. The way guests, who knew that he will show up, chose to dress show how much his presence is special and how much they respect him. If PA thinks that he will gain a respect by showing up and flaunting his overdressed friend/companion/girlfriend/swimmer Charlene, he better think twice.

As for overdressing I do agree that if you have no clue how to dress for a certain occasion it is better to be overdressed then underdressed, especially if you are trying to make an impression on the rest of the "ordinary" people. To that I would say to Charlene "you go girl", but just watch out because that could backfire.;)

He is already doing it: He was at the opening of Zenzen (supposedly asian fast food, but I personally would title it: yuckfood, only to be eaten after the last of your tastebuds and sense of smell have deserted you and you are willing to pay a fortune for food that is less healthy then McD), Habitat and Nike, Ichtys (small clothes boutique opposite Casino gardens), Zara, Dresdner Bank (Though they made a donation to his foundation to insure he'd show)

I don't know about the White House, but in Italy, if you're invited to the residence of the President, even if for an unofficial function, you don't go in jeans, or shorts. The Sporting is a place were I would never dress as some of the guests were, regardless of who invited me or who was present; the fact that a Head of State was going to show up, just added to the need of a certain level of formality, still trying not to overdue. Anyway we seem to agree that a nice cocktail dress (whether Charlene's was one or not) would have been the most appropriate choice for such an event.

As for Steph, even thought I really appreciate her efforts in organizing the event, I would never look at her as a model for dressing choices or codes, whatever the occasion.

I do agree on this with you. I even had said in my post that her outfit was dreadfully looking, but still appropriate for the occasion, meaning she was not overdressed/in a long dress and updo. We all know that Steph has a weird style.

I actually think they were both dressed appropriately for the occassion. Charlene had on a little black dress (how can you go wrong with that) and Stephanie's out was lovely was well. Its not like she wore a colorful cotton top with black cotton pants. I think the outfit was made of silk (appopriate for an evening event)...I would have not liked to see the bra straps (if thats what they were) but still nice for an evening event.

I think Steph Pa & Charlene looked great and I think Pa has decided Charlene is the one. I think Steph has accepted her.I hope for the 'happy ending ' to be announced soon in their plans to marry.

Jaya, I happen to agree with you. I am still hoping that he finds someone else to marry. Someone who he keeps in the backgroung until he decides to announce his engagement. We know to much negative things about Charlene.

charlene has a stylist these days, don't think is the same one from one event to another, but she's getting help. her clothes are not SA production anymore. Steph seems to need help as well. It looks like she's so caught up in her AIDS campaign that she forgot about skin cancer and what over exposure to sun can do to you.

Charlene is too young for him i think. There's something wrong with this couple. It's not natural. It's all fake for me. She doesn't have the look of love for Albert. For me, Caroline should be at the place of Albert. She looks royal and she got manners. She's the only real Princess of Monaco. She was able to preserve the mystique around her. There's is a lot of work to do with her kids but it's possible.... Albert doesn't have the statue of an Head of State. Why do they always need to match him with girls perfect for Hollywood but not for a Palace?? Caroline seems to take her distance from Monaco... God she's right!!

Welcome, philqc, I am agree with you, to 100%.

I feel that it is inappropriate and against protocol for Albert to bring a lady friend to official events as his date, as long as she has not been formally announced as his Fiance. Most Princes bring their girlfriends out in public after an engagement has been announced. I also feel that Charlene's presence took away from the real reason for the event and only served as fodder for gossip about the Prince's lovelife. Once again, I would rather see him keep official duties official. He should have attended alone with Steph.

By the way Charlene really looked nice and she actually went to the beauty salon. I hope Albert insist that she does this in order for him to take her in public. I think he need to (A) keep her in the backgroung or (B) announce his engagement. He is beginning to look like a dirty old man, I feel that he might never get married.

First Welcome PHilqc.

My problem is not that he brought Charlene or a date it was the way she came in. She was yards behind Albert and Stephanie all alone like a bridesmaid would parading down the aisle. She didn't know what to do with her hands and ended up clasping them in front as if she had a bouquet. Albert seem to ignore her presence on the red carpet. It was Stephanie who turned around and spoke to her and then she came forward. That's no way to treat a girlfriend or anyone. If he wanted to bring Charlene or a date and they were not going to walk in with him, then she should have already been there and let him parade in with Stephanie. I was shocked at the lack protocol. If she was going to walk in behind him she should have been escorted by someone not left all alone. It is well known I don't feel Charlene is up to the job but this was an awful position to put her in, although I realize she did it willingly grinning like a school girl. It showed Albert in his entitlement role once again. Stephanie came off as a kind genuine human being and passionate about her aids foundation.
