Let's hope for the best, but this morning I heard in the news that Prince Rainier is still in intensive care, and news is not that encouraging, as they say he needs a respirator. His kids are at his bedside.

Ciao!

I've read today in an italian paper that it could be Stefania's son who will be second in line after Albert. It seems Albert has the right to decide who will be his successor and he prefers (for whatever reason) his nephew Louis instead of Andrea.

It also says that this decision has affected his relationship with Caroline in a bad way.

Even though they're reporting his condition as stable I'm starting to get really worried about Prince Rainier's health now.

And even though what Ariel said to me sounds a bit like gossip, there's something true there, Albert can decide who will be the heir. I mean a lot of us take it for granted it'll be Andrea, but what if he doesn't want that huge responsability, then the heir could be Pierre or maybe even Louis!

I'm not a hundred per cent sure about this, but I believe under the old Constitution the collaterals (siblings) of the Prince Sovereign weren't in the line of succession and so the Sovereign, if childless, had to adopt an heir.

On the contrary, after the reform of 2002, Caroline will authomatically be Albert's heiress the day (let's hope it is a long time from now) he succeds his father, and Andrea will thus be second in line of succession...I think the possibility of the adoption is ruled out by the new reform, but of course, once on the throne Albert will have the power to try and change the Constitution again (that requires France's agreement), and one or more of those in the line of succession might decide to give up their right.

This is what I read about the Constitutional reform...hope I'm not spreading false information!

I heard on the TV (very strange, here in Argentina royal news aren´t on the TV, except some English news and Maxima but the others.. Well in the News they show Grace and "images of her funeral", but they were of Stefano´s funeral) that he is bad
I hope he will be better soon.
Thanks for the pics Enelle and Ariel, I didn´t heard before something like that, but maybe Lois can be succesor but I think that we have to wait and see how is he as a teenager.

I don't think she did, but most people think that in case she was called to succed her brother she would give up her right in favour of one of her children.

At least that's what I've always heard...

A article of www.lavanguardia.es it´s in spanish. Well, it says that Ranier is reciving "asisting breathing" (??? how can you sais that?) i mean he need help to brethe (if someone don´t understand me) and his state is the same (again, my english,i don´t know how to say that). And other things that everyone knows
For those who can read spanish ...
Rainiero, sometido a respiración asistida

LVD - 23/03/2005 - 18.29 horas

The way the new constitution is written if a paternity suit were filed against Albert and he was found to have fathered the child he would be legally responsible to care for the child but not the mother nor would the child be in line as heir to the Throne. He can father as many as he would like and even adopt children or his own if he didnt marry the mother they will not be in line for the Throne. He has to be legally married to the mother for the child to be his heir.

The way the constitution is written Caroline is next in line to rule after Albert then Andrea.

Monaco's Prince Rainier on Respirator
1 hour, 32 minutes ago
Europe - AP

By THIERRY BOINET, Associated Press Writer

MONACO - Prince Rainier III is suffering from cardiac and kidney failure and has been placed on a respirator, the palace said Wednesday.

An official medical update described the 81-year-old prince's condition as "stable" on the second day of his transfer into the intensive care unit of the Cardio-Thoracic Center.

Rainier, whose movie-star wife, Grace Kelly, died in a 1982 car crash, was hospitalized two weeks ago with a chest infection. After a marked improvement, the prince's health suddenly worsened.

A palace statement Wednesday said Rainier was transferred to the intensive care unit after developing a sudden respiratory infection "with cardiac and kidney insufficiency."

"Breathing difficulties made the installation of artificial respiration indispensable," the statement said.

Rainier has a history of heart problems and recently has been plagued with recurring problems linked to his respiratory tract. The prince has been hospitalized numerous times during the past decade.

Crown Prince Albert, 47 — his heir — traveled from abroad to visit his father, as did 48-year-old Princess Caroline, an official familiar with the situation said on condition of anonymity. Princess Stephanie, 40, was seen entering and leaving the hospital.

Monaco, a tiny principality famous for its casinos, Formula One Grand Prix and tax breaks that attract the rich and famous, is nestled on the Mediterranean Coast between Italy and the French Riviera.

Rainier assumed the throne in 1949. Monaco's constitution was revised in 2002 to allow the unmarried Albert to succeed his father despite his lack of heirs. According to Article 10 of the constitution, Caroline would succeed Albert should he die. She, in turn, would be succeeded by her oldest son, Andrea Albert Pierre, 20.

Daily life in the principality went on as normal despite the news that its increasingly fragile ruler had suffered a setback. On Wednesday morning, Stephanie's three young children were seen going to school as usual.

"He has been a very good man and very good to us, the Monegasques," said Claudia Marino, 85, who says her family has lived here for four generations. "Yesterday, I received an Easter egg with his calling card, the tradition for years."

My thoughts and prayers go out to him at this difficult time. I hope that he is not in any pain. I hope he recovers, however, if this is his time I pray he does not suffer.

Once again my prayers go to Prince Rainier and all of his family. Praying and wishing good is the only thing I guess we can do.

Heart and kidney failures at his age are something serious.

Yes Grace you are rght that in the old constitution the sovereign's siblings weren't considered as heirs and if Albert didn't have a heir he would have to adopt one, but now like you say with the 2002 Constituional change his siblings can have rights to the throne. I don't think Caroline gave down her position in the line of sucession either.

And btw Lady Mac Alpine I find ur signature very touching :)

Thank you Rainier reminds me of my Dad who died in 2000 of renal failure. I saw the look on Albert's face and my heart went out to him. This is a private time and its hard to watch someone you love go through what Rainier is. I wish the press would give the family space right now.
