Prince Rainier was hospitalized again today. Apparently he has a respiratory illness again.

Get well soon.

Rough Year for HSH

I think we need to be prepared for the fact that HSH probably won't make it thru this year. He is 81 and has been hospitalized something like five times in the past 12 months. That doesn't sound good to me. I wish him a speedy recovery...but I also hope that he is not in any discomfort.

I don't know about that. Rainier's pretty tough. I think he might be able to survive being hit in the head by a large brick travelling at 300 mph.

He is tough...I agree with you there. But this many hospitalizations isn't a good sign.

Does anyone know what the latest is regarding Prince Rainier? Last I read was that he was still in the hospital, but was at least out of bed moving around.

Rainer in ICU

From the BBC:

Prince Rainier's health worsens

Prince Rainier of Monaco has been placed in intensive care with a worsening lung infection, say palace officials.

The monarch's health is said to have deteriorated since he was hospitalised on 7 March suffering from a bronchial pulmonary infection.

"A relapse of a lung infection has required a transfer to the intensive care unit," a palace statement said.

The 81-year-old has been in and out of hospital in recent months.

He has suffered from heart and respiratory problems for the past decade.

He had been showing signs of improvement since entering the heart and chest clinic, said the palace statement.

Rainier III, who acceded to the throne of the small principality in 1949, is one of Europe's longest-reigning monarchs.

He made world headlines with his marriage to Hollywood movie star Grace Kelly in 1956 after meeting her at the Cannes film festival. He has been credited with reducing Monaco's reliance on tourism and gambling by developing the business sector. However his advancing age and ill-health have led him to delegate more and more responsibility to his son and heir to the throne, Prince Albert.

From AP:

The couple's three grown children, Crown Prince Albert, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie, visited their father in the hospital, an official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Both Albert, 47, and Caroline, 48, had been abroad. Stephanie, 40, was seen entering and leaving the hospital.
