What is it with Communists and evening wear? I've never seen one in a tuxedo.......

I don't believe the Princess Royal has purchased any new clothing for at least 15 years. I would peg that ensemble at around 1987..... :-D
I was looking on getty and what is sad is that she does have some nice clothes. I don't know why she chooses to wear the oldest and Imo the ugliest she has.
She is also president of U.K. fashion exports go figure.

One nice thing about her (besides that she is a very, if dour, hard worker) is that she has kept her figure beautifully over the years.

What is that "hat" on Princess Anne's head? She looks like she is about to go fly fishing!

That color combination can work. Diana did it and it came off superb. Anne's outfit is ill-fitting and frumpy.

Her Majesty looked really elegant, and glrorious both with the red outfit for the Welcoming Ceremony and in the dress for the State Banquet, that the dress The Queen ahd worn once on her Golden Jubilee Tour to Canada in October 2002.Its a pity that not seeing many Royals at the Banquet, i just saw The Duke of Kent and Princess Michael of Kent. Thanks everyone for pics.

Her Majesty does look wonderful. The dress is really complimentary, with the almost jacket-like overlay. I wonder why the evening bag is such a different colour, I don't know if the combination suits Her Majesty, seems a little un-matching.

I'm ever so glad that Her Majesty and His Royal Highness are wearing the Order of the Garter, not that they've ever recieved Chinese awards (thank goodness), but sometimes Her Majesty decides not to wear an order at all, but am so glad Her Majesty showed the Chinese how a Head of State and Sovereign should look.

I must disagree re: Princess Anne. I think she looks lovely in her yellow and blue outfit. She's got a figure to die for and the oufit is perfect for her. IMHO.

Yes but Diana did everything perfectly, didn't she! :p

Given the times & the opinions of the Labour gov't in Britain there is no room for the extensive & expensive wardrobes like Diana's. It is more in touch with the public to recycle outfits. The Queen, Camilla, Anne & Alexandra all wear outfits several times. If they like the outfit then why shouldn't they continue wearing it?

Can you believe that the Queen is being criticised for riding in a carriage with the Chinese President and for wearing a tiara at the State Banquet? A radio station had a presenter saying that she should be ashamed of giving the Chinese President the same treatment as she gave to the President of France. Does the man know nothing of politeness and the whole concept of a State Visit? Besides, HM doesn't have a say who she entertains.

I can understand rewearing clothes but going back 20 or 30 years is not necessary she is the Queens daughter. Even the Queen changes her clothes and gets new pieces.

I don't get the criticism of the Chinese president about his evening attire. From what I gathered, tuxedo is not a tradition form of dress for men in Eastern cultures. Just because he is visiting a Western country, doesn't mean he has to adopt every form of Western dress. His suit appears to be well cut and fits nicely. His tie matches the colour of his wife's dress.

I'll bet if her photo is shown to someone unfamiliar with her, he wouldn't be able to guess her age.

Diana recycled outfits also. My point is that Princess Anne can look better with clothes that better fit her body. She has a great figure for her age and there is no reason for being frumpy. Everyone is hailing the coming of Camilla as a strike back for older women, maybe Anne should jump on that bandwagon!

The Queen looks very elegant. :) (I also like the picture where sje reads the note! :D )

HM's gone back to her smaller almost pillbox style hats. I call them her 'flowerpots' as opposed to the wider brimmed creations she has been wearing in recent years.

in the business world western employees are learning all they can about chinese and japanese etiquette (admittingly because they are big potential clients) but it seems a one way traffic.

Is that well-cut Saville Row suit a traditional form of dress in Eastern cultures? ;)

The fact he is in a suit and tie should be obvious your last observation is off the mark. I have seen pictures of Prince Charles in a suite and tie recently while some of the men were in tuxedo and the ladies in evening gown. It just seemed some of the criticism was based on disagreement over his politics rather than based his fashion statement.

Some pics from the Guildhall banquet tonight from ANP.
