70th Anniversay of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings: Around 70 Laureates to Participate
To mark the 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, the organisers are delighted to announce that a record number of highly decorated scientists will be attending: Almost 70 Laureates have already agreed to take part during the week from June 28 to July 3, 2020. From among the latest laureates, William Kaelin, Jr., Michel Mayor, Olga Tokarczuk and M. Stanley Whittingham are expected to attend. The Nobel Laureates represent 13 different nationalities.
Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Council, commented: “We are glad to have a network of scientists that spans the world and bridges the generations. In the history of the conferences since 1951, the relevance of science has been reported again and again, also basic research, which is, after all, an open-ended research. And in later years, its benefits for society became clear – for example magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or cancer therapy as well as, more recently, the lithium-ion battery in all our mobile devices.“

The Island of Mainau is closed for visitors due to the coronavirus.

Due to the ordinance of the state government on infection protection measures of March 17, 2020, § 4, No. 11, the island of Mainau remains closed until further notice. We want to do our part to slow the spread of the coronavirus as much as possible. We will continue to make the flower island tangible for you via our social media channels. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Mainau as soon as possible. Stay positive, healthy and take care of yourself!
Your Island of Mainau
Herzlich willkommen - Insel Mainau

The flower island of Mainau, one of the most famous tourist attractions in the southwest, is becoming even more sustainable and is now sourcing gas with a 25 percent share of biogas from its local supplier, Stadtwerken Konstanz. The biogas comes from residues from a sugar beet factory. Among other things, the sugar beet leaves, from which no sugar can be produced and which are therefore usually disposed of, are used in a special biogas plant to produce raw biogas, which is then processed and fed into the natural gas network.
- It is important to us to source environmentally friendly energy as locally as possible in line with our Mainau energy and climate protection concept. In this respect, this fits perfectly with the cooperation between the island of Mainau and the municipal utilities for more climate and environmental protection in Constance, which we want to tackle together, said countess Bettina Bernadotte, managing director of Mainau GmbH.

Coronavirus restrictions – Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings 2020 postponed to next year
The 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting and the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences – both scheduled for this summer – will be postponed: The 70th Nobel Laureate Meeting (Interdisciplinary) will now take place 27 Juni – 2 July 2021, the date for the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences is to be determined. This decision was made by the committees of the Council and the Foundation for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.
"Until the very end, we had the hope that we could stick to our planning, but the consequences of the spread of the coronavirus particularly affect the participants of our Meetings, the Nobel Laureates and young scientists from all over the world", explains Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Council. "This decision was particularly difficult for us with regards to the young researchers who have shared their enthusiasm and anticipation over social media in the past few weeks. However, we were able to promise them that their invitations will also be valid for 2021. The interruption of the 'Lindau tradition' is also a great disappointment for the Nobel Laureates – for us it is a historic break."
The health of the residents of Lindau, who would normally have welcomed the Meeting participants from over 100 countries, also played an important role in the decision.
“With all the sadness, there is also the opportunity to try out one or the other new thing for future Meetings. We also want to make selected programme items accessible to the public, as we’ve done before. In this case, we can offer these not only to Lindau and the region, but to those interested worldwide", said Countess Bettina Bernadotte.
Lindau Meetings 2020 Postponed to Next Year

At the end of last year, Dagmar von Arbin, the king's oldest relative, passed away 103 years old.
She was born in 1916 and was married to Nils-Magnus von Arbin, with whom she had five children: Marianne, Louise, Cathrine, Jeanette and Madeleine.
She was close to the royal family and called the family Bernadotte's "grand old lady".
In mid-March, the estate inventory was ready. In total, she left assets worth more than SEK 3.7 million. Among other things, she owned a kakemono painting from the late 19th century, and an oil painting signed by Prince Eugen, also known as the painting prince.
She also owned a women's portrait and several rococo style furniture that her children and grandchildren will share.

On 24th March the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings sent a press release, that this year's meetings are postponed to 2021.

Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Board of Trustees for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and member of the Board of the Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, has written a letter to the website of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.
Dear friends of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings,
none of us could have imagined the current situation and the far-reaching consequences that we will certainly have to face in the coming time. We have also continuously monitored and evaluated all available information about the new corona virus...
... We did not take the decision lightly and we are aware that many of our long-term business partners will also be affected. We very much regret this, but in the current situation we do not consider ourselves able to organize the 2020 meetings in the usual way. The health of the Lindau population, which would normally have welcomed the conference participants from over 100 countries, also played an important role in our decision.

Mainau Island opens again on May 6th - with restrictions
After seven weeks, the flower island in Lake Constance opens its doors to its guests again - albeit with restrictions. It thus follows the decision of the federal and state governments of Baden-Württemberg to reopen botanical gardens in compliance with official requirements.
The team on the island of Mainau worked intensively on the reopening of the botanical garden - the safety of guests is as important as that of the employees.
"We are pleased that we can open the outside areas of the island of Mainau again as part of the new state regulation. We are already in the process of implementing the official requirements, strict hygiene measures and distance regulations for a safe visit to the park and gardens, and all of our employees will do everything possible to adhere strictly to the requirements", explains Managing Director countess Bettina Bernadotte. "It's time to get used to the new everyday life."
Admission only with a pre-purchased online ticket & time slot
In order to be able to adhere to the maximum number of guests and to reduce the risk of people gathering, especially in the entrance area, tickets are currently only online with a visit day and a specific time slot in which to enter the island can be possible.
The island of Mainau will currently be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the moment it can only be reached via the island entrance. The island bus is not used. The restaurants remain closed and various stations on the island offer take-away meals and drinks. The Mainau Träff with a farm shop at the entrance to the island is still open, with its own Mainau products and small dishes to take away. The palm house can be visited, the orchid show has been extended until May 24th. The spring exhibition is also open and has been extended to visitors until July 5. The playgrounds for the little visitors will also be reopened, pony rides will not be offered until further notice.
Increased hygiene and precautionary measures
With a controlled, responsible reopening, the Mainau wants to give visitors the opportunity to enjoy nature, especially in this turbulent time. However, this can only work if everyone adheres to the clear hygiene and behavior guidelines, which is why the hygiene standards in the park and gardens have been increased and occupational safety has also been ensured in the visitor service, taking into account the new requirements of the Federal Ministry of Labor. Among other things, only two people or a household can visit the island of Mainau. In principle, other people must keep a distance of about two meters. Contactless payment is desirable. On the island of Mainau, a variety of precautions have been taken to maintain hygiene and distance, which is indicated in various places in the park by means of posters / displays. The Mainau recommends wearing everyday masks.
Responsibility for guests and society
“The health and safety of our guests and our employees have top priority. In times like these, cohesion and mutual respect are even more important", says count Björn Bernadotte. "In your own interest and in the interests of your fellow human beings, it is therefore important to support us in implementing the necessary measures", he appeals. “We would like to thank our guests in advance for their understanding that they are currently not able to visit the island as spontaneously as they have been used to before and for their help, otherwise we run the risk of taking a step back in the fight against the virus. All of Mainau are very happy to welcome visitors soon for a real walk on the Mainau".

Here she is - Crown Princess Victoria's (to many) unknown relative! 31-year-old Elsa Bernadotte has the last name that makes everyone cringe, but her super career as an entrepreneur she has created entirely of her own strength.
In 2015, she founded the food app Karma, which conveys food that restaurants, cafes and shops would otherwise have thrown away. All for half the price and to 1.3 million users.
Elsa is the daughter of the king's third cousin Carl Bernadotte, 64, and his wife Lotta, 65, and grew up on the estate Frötuna in Rasbo outside Uppsala, where the king's father often hunted.
- I have many fond memories from all the visits that I and my family made at Frötuna Estate, where we were always met by a great hospitality and a dear family community, the king has told to Svensk Damtidning.
And soon Elsa Bernadotte steps out in the royal spotlight: She and Prince Daniel will both be involved when his Fellowship broadcasts live from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences now on Wednesday.
It will be an encouraging event that appeals to Sweden's young people and Elsa Bernadotte will, among other things, talk about how she became an entrepreneur after dropping off the prestige job at Chanel - and how she then found her business idea.
Kronprinsessan Victorias okända släkting! _ Svensk Dam

Elsa Bernadotte was a mentee at Prince Daniel's Fellowship and its entrepreneurial programme in 2017-2019. Elsa's great-grandparents were count Carl Bernadotte af Wisborg and baroness Marianne de Geer af Leufsta.

This Elsa Bernadotte? Daughter of Carl Bernadotte, Count af Wisborg (*1955) and Countess Charlotte, nee Urban (*1954)?

"Elsa Bernadotte, Countess af Wisborg (*1988), engaged to Hjalmar Ståhlberg Nordegren (*1989)" (Hein Bruins Page)

Why would the last name Bernadotte make anyone cringe in egalitarian Sweden?

Royal expert and author Roger Lundgren's memorial words of Dagmar von Arbin in Fokus are now open for everyone, previously it was behind a paywall.
Even with our current royal family, there was a lot of contact. Dagmar von Arbin lived the last years of her life at a retirement home in Nockeby in Bromma - very close to Drottningholm Palace. Had it been celebrated somewhere with the royal relatives, the royal couple always insisted on taking Dagmar home, and each time the king escorted Dagmar up to the apartment door. "You can think that the aunts in the home were watching", Dagmar laughed afterwards.
The future of the monarchy in Sweden never worried Dagmar over. She had good contact with Crown Princess Victoria and was very impressed with Princess Estelle's way of dealing with the public interest despite her young age.
At the royal weddings, children's baptisms and birthday parties of recent years, Dagmar always participated as one of the guests of honor and then became a bit of a celebrity for the many TV viewers around the country. After all, it was true that, more than anyone else, she brought the Bernadotte family together through so many years.

Tomorrow and on Sunday on Mainau Island
Midsummer weekend 2020
Experience Sweden with the whole family
Midsummer, the festival for the summer solstice, has a long tradition in Sweden and the other Nordic countries, where it doesn't really get dark at night during this time of year. It is one of the largest festivals of the year and is celebrated with relatives, neighbors and friends on Saturday closest to the longest day of the year. The Bernadotte family, who have their roots in Sweden, would like to bring this Swedish tradition closer to the guests of the island of Mainau:
But everything is a little different this year. Around the Rothaus Seeterrassen, we have put up information boards for you about the typical Swedish traditions on midsummer, which provide information about one of the most beautiful festivals. A maypole will also be visible and in the park you will be able to discover many Swedish decorations.

Countess Bettina Bernadotte, the President of the Council of The Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings, visited Lindau's new Mayor Claudia Alfons on 8th June. Among other things, the program of this year's Online Science Days 2020 was a topic.

This year's Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings were postponed to next year. But on 19-21 June there is an Online Sciathon 2020. 48 groups will work on their projects during 48 hours.
"I imagine the young guys will be like me, and if it were me, I would be very happy to have that online discussion." #NobelLaureate Edmond H. Fischer, a patron of our #Sciathon, talks to Countess Bettina Bernadotte about the project:

Edmond H. Fischer is 100 years old.

Lindau Online Science Days 2020
From 28 June – 1 July the scientific world will gather for the Online Science Days 2020 of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Normally, the two meetings planned for 2020 would have been held in Lindau, and Germany would have had the pleasure of welcoming hundreds of the world’s best young scientists as well as many Nobel Laureates. This year, we will gather online instead, for a digital exchange between different generations, cultures, and disciplines.
Science Days 2020 _ Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

we'll start off the Online Science Days 2020 #LINOSD with a conversation between Countess Bettina Bernadotte and @karan_khemka: Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in a Nutshell

Bunte has interviewed countess Bettina Bernadotte:

About the flower island Mainau: "I am impressed by the high quality of life in the region"
For countess Bettina Bernadotte, the island of Mainau is a place to slow down and relax - and her home. In the interview, she reveals her favorite places.
From 150-year-old trees to colorful blossoms and baroque palace complexes - the small island of Mainau in Lake Constance attracts thousands of tourists every year with its Mediterranean charm. While count Lennart Bernadotte led the island until his death in 2004 and was largely responsible for the flower paradise on the island, today countess Bettina Bernadotte (46) and her younger brother count Björn Bernadotte (45) are in charge of the family-run business company. In the interview, the countess revealed what makes Mainau Island so interesting and versatile.
BUNTE.de: What is special about the island of Mainau?
Bettina Bernadotte: The island of Mainau is very close to my heart. It is a place to slow down and relax. With our gardens, tree collection and seasonal flowers, we offer a nature experience that brings visitors out of everyday life and appeals to the senses. We incorporate nature-pedagogical aspects into this experience in order to bring the guests closer to various elements of their environment - for example information about the pollination performance of the insects, which can be experienced in our insect garden. The Mainau is also a place for festivals, events and international encounters.
What was it like for you as children to live on an island?
The Mainau was a huge adventure playground - even if our parents might not have liked to hear it sometimes. There was a lot to discover for us children. As soon as the visitors left the island, we thoroughly researched and played on the entire island. Trees that were easy to climb were particularly popular, of course. My siblings and me were often found playing in watercourses and piles of leaves.
And how did your home shape you?
Our parents have given us a deep sense of responsibility for the island from childhood, and they have always given us the freedom to go our own way, for which I am very grateful. Today I am happy to continue to work in close cooperation with my brother in the interests of our parents, together with our employees for our guests.

New rose is called 'Ile de Fleurs'
After roses with the names 'Insel Mainau','Mainauperle','Mainaufeuer','Gräfin Diana' or 'Großherzogin Luise' there is another variety from today in the beautiful roundabout of roses from the breeder's house W. Kordes' Söhne, die have a connection to the flower island in Lake Constance: Countess Bettina Bernadotte christened on 16th July the purple-violet shrub rose, which can also be seen in the promenade of wild and shrub roses in Mainau, in the melodious name 'Ile de Fleurs'.
In the presence of count Björn Bernadotte, Mainau garden director Markus Zeiler and the breeders Alexander Kordes and Thomas Proll, the christening of the rose, which was originally envisaged on a larger scale, was now celebrated in small groups in the palm house. "In these difficult times we wanted to send a positive signal with this christening of the rose and hope that this beautiful flower will please many rose lovers in the future", said countess Bettina Bernadotte.

In 2020, the cult game CATAN celebrates its 25th birthday. For the anniversary, an oversized CATAN field with the typical honeycomb structure has been created on the Island of Mainau, which has now been officially opened. In realizing the project, Mainau worked closely with the KOSMOS publishing house from Stuttgart, where the game was first published in 1995.
Mainau managing director countess Bettina Bernadotte completed the round of opening speakers: "My family and I are big game fans. CATAN is part of our regular program. That is why I was immediately enthusiastic when the Kosmos publishing house asked whether we could imagine to create a large CATAN field on the island of Mainau It has always been exciting to take an imaginary trip to CATAN during the game, but to experience the whole thing in reality now - together with Klaus Teuber, in the Imagination the game has come to pass, and Oliver Wnuk, who as an actor is practically constantly immersed in fantasy worlds, is a wonderful experience. Everyone involved in the project did a really great job. "

Mainau Akademie

"Systemic sustainability as a regenerative balance between technical, economic and natural principles."
Mainau principle

Inspired by the “Green Charter of Mainau” and its initiator, Count Lennart Bernadotte, Countess Sonja devoted herself to advanced training in the field of nature and the environment for more than 30 years.
The park, gardens and philosophy of Mainau are a platform for nature education, a healthy way of life and garden culture.
Count Björn Bernadotte took up this commitment and, after completing his degree in social pedagogy, opened a new business field for advanced training at the Mainau Academy.
The Mainau Akademie eV association, as the sponsor, pursues the mental, emotional and physical health of the population as its top priority.
The special purpose of the association is to awaken and further develop ecological and preventive health skills, environmental awareness and enthusiasm for experiencing nature in children, young people and adults.
Another focus of the Mainau Academy eV is to create, secure and convey the balance between technology, economy and nature, as well as natural behavioral patterns, which in turn leads to an improvement in public health and thus promotes academic performance and economic efficiency.
Special emphasis is placed on the five main focuses of the Mainau Academy (health / prevention, communication / leadership, education, social commitment, garden / nature) according to the principle of systemic sustainability, or as Count Björn aptly formulated it according to the "Mainau principle" to convey.
