The ruby necklace is really not very beauiful. Queen Sofia has several ruby necklaces. Wonder why they did not break one like this up and made a nice diamond and ruby Parure including tiara from the stones
I am not sure there are enough stones in this necklace to meaningfully contribute to a ruby and diamond parure

Glad to see her break out the jewels! She should have worn the sapphire necklace with the blue dress

The bird necklace looks very much 1980s, imo. It wouldn't well anymore nowadays. Also, Letiza wore the earrings at a day events, when such a large necklace would have been too much.

I'm very fond of the lovely floral tiara. But it's over-used. Let's hope for something else in London this summer.

Queen Sofia and Queen Letizia must have had a good rummage through the Zarzuela jewel chest and decided what was being handed over to her daughter in law.

My hunch was correct on the floral tiara its such a versatile piece and really suits Letizia, can anyone identify her brooch at the gala dinner?

As i said Queen Sofia has several other diamond and ruby necklaces. and mopt all the most beautiful if i remember right.

I'm now reading in Foro Dinastias that the bird rubies earrings and necklace set was a design by Salvador Dalí. Not sure if that's true, I've also read in the press that they were an Arab gift to Queen Sofia. Maybe it's just some legend made out of their strambotic design :D

But they certainly could pass for Dalí's jewels. His designs were...well, as "interesting" as all his artistic work:

For a State Visit to the Emperor and Empress of Spain I did expect Letizia to pack out with pearls, for an example the Mellerio diamond-and-pearls diadem or the big diadem with the pearl buttons. It is all so mweh... for me. I expected more.

They definitely look Arab, which is often a style that borders to 1980's Edelkitsch (Dallas, Dynasty) I am sorry to say.

Yes, the jewellery is totally on point! Letizia has really started to pull out the bling!

Gala Dinner:

The earrings need a better view to identify them, but you heard it from me first: they're these from Queen Sofia as usual (they have a matching necklace that she should have worn indeed):

ETA: the bracelet is not new, they're the two bracelets from the passing jewells that she debuted last month, only worn together on the same arm: http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/King+Felipe+VI+Queen+Letizia+Visit+Japan+Day+7M3oHHxS2otx.jpg

Better view on the jewellery of the state dinner, you could be right, too bad Sofia's hairstyle is always in the way!! ;)

I love that Letizia is exploring Sofia's jewellery box and wearing them. Some great earrings on this Japan visit

Yes that is great that she gives long not seen Jewels an outing. I only wish she would also given the necklaces and brooshes outings not only the earrings.

She will get to the necklaces and brooches, just give her some time.

Let's hope so. I think the last time she has worn a necklace (and a simple pearl necklace nothing elaborate) was for the Princess of Asturias Awards in 2015. But she has worn plenty of them in the early years after her marriage.

just give her some time.

Indeed.. I think some Women, [the Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen of Spain spring to mind] may be overawed by the scope and richness of the jewels suddenly available to them, as well as the expectation the public have of them being worn, and worn WELL. It just takes them longer than for 'naturals' like the Queen of the Netherlands and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Whilst I too wanted to see one of the diamond and pearl tiaras get used, I appreciate that Letizia probably wanted to use one of the lower profile, comfortable tiaras. Am sure due consideration was given to the fact that the hostess would not be wearing a tiara at all.

As regards whether pearls needed to be worn as a homage to their hosts, again, I think this is really all about the comfort of the wearer. Whilst the Japanese are fond of pearls, the empress has worn non pearl jewellery herself on many occasions, and on this one, was in a diamond necklace with no pearls.

I can't recall the last time Letizia wore a necklace, the brooches /bracelets are only really worn for State Visits and the rings are but a distant memory.

That might be the case but the Queen of Spain wore more Jewelsm in the first years after her marriage and then stopped at some point.

That is teh case for the Duchess of Cornwall as well. She wore quite a lot of the larger pieces in the first few years and then settled down to a few favorites that are repeated all the time. IMO, this is about what people like wearing at that point in time.
