I love this picture of HM. She looks so powerful and so comfortable in her new role as Queen, even though she is grieving for her father.

Nice commentary on the Queen. He did a great job of stressing the fact that through all the negative things the family has endured the Queen has always managed to keep her wits about her. She has ruled with dignity and grace. I have to agree completely.

I have a feeling, and it's only my thought, that we've seen the last of the great monarchs with Elizabeth II.

It is sad, but I have to agree with you. Her devotion to her nation and position are commandable, as well as her dignity, poise and regalness. She defines the concept of 'monarch' in my eyes.

I disagree.
I think Elizabeth II is the last great traditional monarch, but she is not the last great British monarch. William V will be a great modern British monarch.

I hope he won't be too modern a monarch. In all honesty, there's not much that needs changing about the British Monarchy. Opinion polls have consistently, over the last half century shown that the RF enjoy the support of circa 80% of the British population.

I agree that we'll never see anything like the Queen again in our lifetimes. For one thing, I don't foresee a future monarch celebrating a diamond jubilee, barring some awful catastrophe. The Queen is an icon in her own right, the most famous woman in the world, the most travelled person in the world. We must appreciate her while we've got her.

Charles will, I think, surprise a lot of people and be a well-respected and competent King, much in the Edward VII molde.

Thank you for the article, the one thing I liked most about it was knowing Philip was there for the birth of Edward. Such a shame he missed out on his first 3 but at least he was there for his last child.

Thank you for the pictures. That shade of purple is absolutely stunning on Her Majesty.

[ignore the "Queen clashes with Archbishop" headline, there are some good pictures in the article]

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a multi-faith reception at Lambeth Palace on 15 February 2012.

The event, which offered religious leaders an opportunity to show their affection and support for the Queen in her Jubilee year, also included short speeches from Dr Williams and the Queen herself.

Linking the concept of religion with her anniversary, the Queen said: 'Many of the values and ideas we take for granted in this and other countries originate in the ancient wisdom of our traditions. Even the concept of a jubilee is rooted in the Bible. Here at Lambeth Palace we should remind ourselves of the significant position of the Church of England in our nation’s life. The concept of our established Church is occasionally misunderstood and, I believe, commonly under-appreciated. Its role is not to defend Anglicanism to the exclusion of other religions. Instead, the Church has a duty to protect the free practice of all faiths in this country.'

Leaders from the Christian, the Baha'i, the Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Zoroastrian communities were at Lambeth Palace and the royal couple spoke to each group about their particular faith and significant object.

During her visit, the Queen was also invited to see the ampulla and spoon - the jug and spoon which was used when she was anointed at her Coronation - and said: 'It's nice to see it again.'

Commenting on the event and the two speeches, Sister Catherine, from the Sisters of the Love of God, said: 'I think it was a very impressive occasion. They were very inspiring words from both of them.' Sister Catherine...also expressed her delight at the inclusion of so many faiths, and commended the Queen on making the point that all faiths should be protected. Sister Catherine said that 'to hear that stated so clearly is very inspiring'.

She sounds like a lovely lady, but IMO the words 'enjoy giving birth' are both an oxymoron and a physical impossibility.

I know the DM writes some interesting stuff about the royals but this strikes me as either totally wrong or very badly written: A rumour had circulated that The Queen, who had sought Betty’s help when pregnant with Prince Edward, had asked Betty to help her relax. It had happened not long after intruder Michael Fagan had broken into the palace (making it as far as the Queen’s bedchamber) and Prince Andrew’s girlfriend Koo Stark was exposed as a one-time porn actress.

To me it reads as if the Queen sought Betty's help when she was pregnant with Edward because of the Michael Fagan intrusion and Koo Stark being exposed but...that doesn't make sense as when these above incidents occurred Edward was already 18.

Edward - born 1964
Fagan intrusion - 1982
Koo - 1982 as well.

I think it is supposed to be that in 1982, because of the extra stress she suffered that year The Queen again sought Betty's advise on how to relax because Betty had advised her during her pregnancy with Edward. It might be that the article is indicating that the rumours that Betty had helped the Queen in 1964 surfaced in 1982 but whatever the section is supposed to be saying it is sloppy writing and unfortunately it is something the DM is doing more and more lately.

I took it to mean she had first met Betty in 1964 while pregnant with Edward, and she was so effective she called upon her services again in 1982 during that particularly stressful time.
