The Crown Princess named the research vessel R/V Svea
On Wednesday, September 25, Crown Princess visited Lysekil and participated in the naming of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU's new research vessel R/V Svea, and visited SLU's sea fish laboratory.
The visit to Lysekil began with a seminar on changing sea as well as how SLU worked on acquiring R/V Svea and what opportunities the vessel provides for the research. Several of the speakers who participated in the seminar highlighted the importance of R/V Svea's importance for how SLU and SMHI can collaborate even better in research.
Professor Lars Arneborg, one of SMHI's researchers, talked about how researchers can see the effects of early environmental degradation in the Baltic Sea and how long it can take for a certain type of environmental degradation to disappear.
The ship is an important platform for collaboration
Jacob Granit, Director General of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, summarized the seminar and talked about the need to see the ecosystem in its entirety. For example, what happens to the rest of the ecosystem when we fish? The Baltic Sea is one of the world's most polluted inland oceans, but also one of the world's most researched.
- The work is complex with many different actors and therefore collaboration is important. Svea is a step in the right direction and will be an important platform, Jakob Granit said.
After lunch, the naming ceremony of R/V Svea took place on the Gullmarskajen. The ceremony ended with the Crown Princess naming R/V Svea:
"I give you the name Svea, may happiness and prosperity accompany you, your crew and everyone on board, on your missions over the seas."
The Crown Princess was then given a tour of the ship Svea.
The Crown Princess ended the day with a visit to SLU's marine fish laboratory where Noél Holmgren, head of the Department of Aquatic Resources, welcomed and told about the institution. Researchers Joakim Hjelm and Mattias Sköld spoke about the situation for the Baltic cod, marine protection areas and challenges with fish and fishing.

On Thursday, October 3, the Crown Princess attended the EU Arctic Forum in Umeå.
The forum will be organized on October 3-4 and there will be representatives from the Arctic regions and municipalities, civil society, indigenous peoples, researchers, students, business and others. The purpose is to discuss international cooperation and issues related to climate, environment and sustainable investments in the Arctic.
The forum started with the Crown Princess giving a speech where she said:
“The research station in Abisko is where I first understood - many years ago - how even Sweden faces the consequences of climate change. I wish everyone could go there, to see with their own eyes the dramatic changes taking place in the Arctic right now. I realize, of course, that this is not an option. But what we can do, and must do, is to listen to those with first-hand knowledge.”
The EU Arctic Forum consists of three main sections: a high-level session involving, among other foreign ministers and leading international experts, an "Arctic Stakeholder session" with various thematic and an indigenous dialogue.

Victoria said at her speech also
"Ladies and gentlemen. When we think about the Arctic we think about climate change and the environment. We think about polar bears and melting glaciers. And we should. We have to.
However, the Arctic is also about peace and security. History and culture. It is about sustainable economic development in eight countries, with a total of more than 500 million citizens. It is about the wellbeing of all the people, plants and animals to whom the Arctic is home."

“I want to congratulate the people of Sweden because they have a crown princess who is willing to spend the entire day.” Martin Breum referring to Princess Victoria she is still here @UmeaUniversity in person attending the #EUArcticForum

This is how Victoria engages in the climate - the experts tell us
Climate meeting in Iceland about the Arctic, visit to the sea fish laboratory in Lysekil and study visit on plastic recycling in Motala.
Crown Princess Victoria has a packed climate autumn.
In addition to all other public missions, Crown Princess Victoria continues to prioritize environmental issues.
3.5 years ago, she was appointed by UN then-Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as one of 16 international ambassadors for the Global Sustainable Development Goals.
She has placed particular focus on the world oceans, on changing the global fishing industry and on health.
And she has taken the ambassadorship very seriously. The Crown Princess has since participated in UN meetings in New York, made study visits to fishing companies in Japan and is often present, for example, when Stockholm Resilience Center, an international research unit at Stockholm University, organizes activities.
Johan Kuylenstierna, who until last year was the CEO of Stockholm Resilience Center, told on the Crown Princess's 40th birthday to Expressen about a UN event in New York in June 2017. There, a UN official stated that he had never seen a royal sitting with so long and note so feverish and interested. According to Kuylenstierna, it is also uncommon for a UN ambassador to be as well-prepared as Victoria.
- She masters so many types of issues, not least social issues. She travels a lot in the world, asks questions and has a lot to contribute herself. Historically, environmental issues have been fairly easy for royalty to engage in, because they have not been perceived as political. But they have become political, Johan Kuylenstierna, today vice chairman of the Climate Policy Council, told Expressen.
Professor Johan Rockström, who was also director of the Stockholm Resilience Center and is now head of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research outside Berlin, has spoken of the Crown Princess as a "moral value meter". He gladly returns when Victoria in April 2017 caught the eye of Japanese CEOs at the fishing company Shiogama - and told them to quit unsustainable and illegal fishing.
- She expresses the same message that a Greenpeace activist would like to convey, but can wrap it in her future role as head of state, Johan Rockström told Expressen. He added that as her supervisor, he gets almost tired because the Crown Princess asks so many questions.
- It's like a marathon when you're with her, Johan Rockström explained .
This autumn, the Crown Princess is participating in an EU conference on the Arctic in Umeå, inaugurates an exhibition on the Arctic at the Nordic Museum and is in place in Iceland when the Arctic Circle Assembly gathers for a meeting on October 10-11.
- The Crown Princess has developed very much on these issues and is knowledgeable about them in terms of knowledge. When the Crown Princess was younger she handed out the Junior Water Prize and attended. Now she is much more active herself. She often gives the opening speech and they are very good. She can add a poem and not only refer to science, she really has the breadth and an incredible amount of experience, Johan Kuylenstierna emphasized.
When the Crown Princess last year gave a large interview in DN about her climate commitment, she said this:
- It's so important not to duck for the climate. I will probably keep doing this. And it will probably always be needed.
The Crown Princesss' climate fall:
- August 22: Visits with Agency for Marine and Water Management at the Marine Center, Simrishamn and a visit to Simris Alg, which makes sweets that are marketed as climate smart.
- August 27: Attendance at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, Stockholm.
- August 28: Attendance at Stockholm Water Prize Symposium, Stockholm.
- September 16-18: Visit in Denmark at House of Green, which is a showroom where guests get the opportunity to see Danish innovation solutions for green conversion and sustainability as well as look at Amager Bakke, a thermal power plant where waste and garbage turn into heat and energy.
- September 21: The Crown Princess and Princess Estelle participate in Keep Sweden Tidy's campaign to clean up nature.
- September 25: Attendance at the naming ceremony of SLU's research vessel R/V Svea and visit at SLU's sea fish laboratory, Lysekil.
- October 3: Attendance at the EU Arctic Forum, Umeå.
- October 9: Attendance at the inauguration of “The Arctic - while the ice melts”, Nordic Museum, Stockholm.
- October 10-11: Attendance at The Arctic Circle Assembly, Reykjavik, Iceland.
- October 17: Visit at Swedish Plastic Recycling, Motala.

About the exhibition
The Arctic – while the ice is melting _ Nordiska museet

Victoria's speech, she said among other things:
Nordenskiöld and Nansen. Andrée and Amundsen.
The early Nordic polar scientists are well-known names for most of us. Perhaps we do not associate them primarily with scientific advances, but more with adventurous voyages of discovery… sometimes with unfortunate endings.
But these polar pioneers still deserve their place in the history of science. Their travels contributed to a broad and popular interest in the Arctic - which in turn paved the way for new discoveries.
My own grandfather's grandfather's father, King Oscar II, was himself involved in financing several such expeditions.
At that time, the Arctic was in many ways a mystery. Today we know more. But there is still so much more to discover and understand.

Victoria landed in Reykjavik at 02.00. She attends at The Arctic Circle Assembly today and tomorrow. In the morning Victoria was welcomed by ambassador Håkan Juholt. Victoria has with her Head of her Household Lena Bartholdson, her aide-de-camp Anna-Karin Broth and the director of court's press department Margareta Thorgren. According to Svensk Damtidning Victoria is staying at the President's guesthouse.
When Victoria arrived to the ambassador's residence, she said to Svensk Damtidning's reporter:
Victoria had tea with ambassador Håkan Juholt and his wife Åsa.
- So fun that you are here too!
Ambassador Juholt:
- This visit will be about the Arctic, about life in the seas and fossil-free energy solutions. And the Crown Princess will meet the foremost experts in Iceland in these particular areas.
What does your contact with the Crown Princess look like?
- I am incredibly impressed by the energy and strength she exudes. Her commitment, not least to climate issues, is really deeply grounded.
And what is it like to have Victoria as a guest?
- I am most anxious for that everything works! That she will experience it as smoothly, and that the visit will be as she wishes.
- When she sits on the plane on Saturday, I hope she will feel that this trip, it was useful, it was good for me.
Are you nervous about something going wrong?
- Yes, I can say as such, that the list of things that, hypothetically, could go wrong, yes it is very long , says Håkan Juholt - with a twinkle in his eye.
Crown Princess Victoria in Iceland - this is happening today
- The visit starts at the Icelandic Maritime Research Institute just before your morning coffee (Reykjavik is two hours after Stockholm).
- Then the Crown Princess goes home to Ambassador Håkan Juholt at the beautiful Swedish residence. Here she will see, among other things, a photo exhibition with portraits of the Nobel Laureates.
- In the afternoon she focuses entirely on the big conference Arctic Circle, which starts down in the harbor at lunchtime. The Crown Princess will give a speech, and then she will meet Iceland's former President Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson.
- In the evening Victoria is then guest of honor at the dinner at the Swedish residence. Håkan and Åsa Juholt have invited young people from Iceland.

Victoria's speech
She started by telling about King Oscar II, her grandfather’s grandfather’s father. She told about the trips to Svalbard she made with Haakon and Frederik. And she ended her speech by referring to another Oscar, her son.
Victoria said among other things:
Before I left for Reykjavik, I went into the Bernadotte library, our family library at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.
The library contains some 100 000 books collected by my ancestors, and was founded by King Oscar II - my grandfather’s grandfather’s father.
His own collection of books and photographs clearly reflects his enthusiasm for Arctic research and exploration in the last decades of the 19th century.
Among the projects he sponsored were Nordenskiöld’s explorations to the Russian Arctic and Greenland, and Fritjof Nansen’s Polar journey on the ship Fram.(...)
Coming generations may not have a voice or a vote. At least not yet. But we owe them to make the right decisions, to base those decisions on solid knowledge – and, above all, to act accordingly.
I am quite sure that the Arctic enthusiast King Oscar would agree. And that his namesake, my 3 year old son, Prince Oscar, expects nothing less.

Svensk Damtidning about the dinner last night
The dinner was simply a brilliant example of Håkan Juholt's effective networking:
- My job is to get Icelanders to like Sweden, and to be curious about Sweden, he says.
The result was this wonderful mix of influencers, fashionists, media profiles and actresses. Including! The coolness factor was simply soaring. Which didn't stop them from being a little tense as they sat in the lounge sofa.
But the director of the court press department Margareta Thorgren gave her best practical tips and then Håkan Juholt made everyone relax even more:
- The only thing you must not be tonight is boring! he joked, adding:
- It's just talking. Like loud!
And there she came, tonight's royal main guest. Very expectant and dressed in a midnight blue chiffon dress. The power knot was taut and the heels high.
How does it feel for the evening?
- Well that's good, thank you! I am very excited for this, it will be very fun to meet young Iceland. And inspiring too, I hope!
- Then the day has also been very good I think ... A broad representation around my heart issues.
And as the caring person she always is, she added:
- I hope it has given you something too!

Nevertheless, Norway was briefly mentioned in the opening speeches. It took a Swede to pull Norway into the Arctic.
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden mentioned her forefathers as well as their expeditions to Svalbard in her elegantly delivered opening speech. In that way, both Oscar II Land and the Nordenskiöld Land on Spitsbergen became part of the Arctic storytelling.

H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria visits Climeon’s power plant in Iceland
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Håkan Juholt, Ambassador of Sweden to Iceland, has today visited Climeon’s first geothermal power plant in Iceland where water from the ground is turned into clean electricity.
Today, Climeon and Varmaorka’s first geothermal power plant had a royal visit when H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria visited the site to learn more about geothermal heat power at low temperatures and Climeon’s Heat Power technology. The geothermal power plant in the Icelandic community Fludír is the first in the world to use Climeon’s technology to produce electricity from geothermal water.
- To see how hot water from the ground turns in to clean electricity is incredibly interesting and exciting, says H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria. It makes me proud to see how innovative Swedish companies contribute to a more sustainable development, the Crown Princess continues.
The royal visit began with a happy and curious Crown Princess being guided around the power plant. After that, Veronica Wänman, Climeon's Country Manager and Key Account Manager in Iceland, as well as Joachim Karthäuser, co-founder and CTO of Climeon, briefly presented the company's history and technology. Then the Crown Princess was given the opportunity to build an animated version of Climeon’s Heat Power module as well as run the power plant herself.
- The potential of geothermal heat power as an energy source seems enormous and here, Iceland and Climeon has come a long way. It was very inspiring to see how these small power plants strengthen the countryside through locally produced renewable energy, says H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria.
- We are honored that the Crown Princess with her passion for the environment choses to visit Climeon's geothermal power plant here in Iceland. We hope that we have been able to show the Crown Princess a good example of how Swedish innovation and Nordic cooperation can help fight the climate crisis, says Veronica Wänman, Climeon's Country Manager and Key Account Manager in Iceland.

Hot springs, Icelandic horses and freshly picked strawberries in October. Now Victoria has finished her days in Iceland.
Yesterday, the official part of Crown Princess Victoria's Iceland trip ended with an afternoon and evening in the barren and powerful landscape of Flúðir.
The royal mini cortege rolled in 20 minutes ago and the Icelandic horses that would be in the picture were not cooperative.
But otherwise, the Crown Princess had a successful afternoon, and while the sun went down and dusk became a starry evening, a very special dinner took place at this small community's own celebrity hotel, Hotel Flúðir.
After a record-breaking change of clothes (on type 15 minutes), the crown princess then appeared in a silk dress.
At the dinner attended a small group of experts from the Swedish company Climeon, which Victoria visited during the afternoon.
Climeon is a world leader in transforming low-temperature water into clean electricity, an innovation that is considered to contribute to a fossil-free society. No wonder the Crown Princess had asked to hear more! And no wild guess that this was the big topic of conversation during the evening.
The guests did not sit in the dining room but in the hotel's chambre separée, for this was a smaller and more private dinner than the one the Crown Princess was at yesterday.
As an entrée, we were offered a dish with locally produced mushrooms. Then Victoria got to enjoy the delicacy of cod fillet, and for dessert there were strawberries, picked in October - in Iceland! The secret behind this dream dessert is called heated greenhouses and there are many more of them right here.
Early Saturday morning, the Crown Princess flies home to Stockholm again.

The royal court at its website
On October 10-11, the Crown Princess visited Iceland and the Arctic Circle conference.
The Crown Princess initiated the visit to Iceland's marine research institute, which has been commissioned by the Icelandic government to monitor the development of all living in the seas and give advice that they must conserve the sea's resources.
Swedish residence
At the Swedish residence in Reykjavik, the Crown Princess met with Swedish embassy staff and Ambassador Håkan Juholt. The Crown Princess received information on current issues with which the embassy is working.
Arctic Circle
Arctic Circle is the largest international conference on the Arctic with more than 2,000 participants from 60 countries. The conference is organized annually and there are representatives from governments, organizations, companies, universities, think tanks and concerned citizens.
After a meeting with the conference chairman Ólafur Ragnar Grimson (President of Iceland 1996-2016), the Crown Princess gave a speech for the participants:
“I believe that we in the Nordic family - Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden - are in an excellent position to contribute with the best of our knowledge, ideas and new solutions. It is my hope that the Nordic countries together can be a driving force for a sustainable and peaceful development in the Arctic region.”
In the afternoon, the Crown Princess listened to lectures held in conjunction with the conference.
In the evening, the Crown Princess met young and influential young people aged 22-35 at a dinner at the Swedish residence.

Visits to the National Energy Authority and the Hellisheiði Works
The Crown Princess's visit to Iceland continued on Friday, October 11, with a visit to the National Energy Authority and The Geothermal Training Program of the United Nations University. Director-General of the Energy Agency Guðni A. Jóhannesson gave an overview of the energy situation and described the challenges and opportunities that Iceland, the Nordic Europe is facing.
In the CarbFix project at the Hellisheiði plants, the researchers have developed a method for storing carbon dioxide in the soil. The method captures the carbon dioxide contained in the steam formed in connection with the extraction of geothermal energy from the bedrock. The trapped gas is then mixed with residual water from the power plant and then pumped back into the bedrock where the carbon dioxide is converted into mineral.
Lunch at the residence
After a lunch with President Guðni Jóhannesson and Mrs. Eliza Reid at the Bessastaðir residence, the Crown Princess visited a facility where low-temperature water for clean electricity. The plant is operated by Icelandic Heat Energy together with the Swedish technology company Climeons.

Victoria on the visit: "Here are our sins"
During Thursday, Crown Princess Victoria visited the Swedish Plastic Recycling plant.
-Here are our sins, Victoria said of the plastic mountain according to Motala Vadstena newspaper.
This week, images from a fall walk were spread, where Prince Oscar excelled in chasing plastic in nature.
The prince's mother, Crown Princess Victoria, is a diligent environmentalist and has been seen repeatedly picking up plastic with her children.
On Thursday she visited Swedish Plastic Recycling in Motala, which is the largest plant of its kind in Europe.
During the visit, the Crown Princess received a gift, in the form of a suitcase made entirely of recycled plastic.
- Oh. Then I can always carry a little bit of Motala, Victoria exclaimed according to Motala Vadstena newspaper.
The company's CEO tells the newspaper that the visit was a positive surprise, and that Crown Princess Victoria showed a great deal of knowledge about recycling issues.
The Crown Princess: Hard to be a consumer
The Crown Princess herself does not consider it difficult to sort plastic, but at the same time admitted:
- Being a consumer today and doing the best for the environment can be difficult.
The Crown Princess tells SVT Östergötland that she learned a lot during the visit.
- Yes, it is to think a little about what it is for plastic. Maybe separate the lid from the rest of the package. I have also found out about such things that may be more complicated than machine than what we as consumers think and think. Like a film on top of a package, for example, that it sets some. It is also useful to know. You can actually make conscious choices.
SVT: What about your own waste sorting?
- We work as much as we can to sort. It is useful to see such a business. It may not be possible for everyone, but you can try to learn differently. It's a way for me to highlight what you can do as a consumer.

On Thursday, October 17, the Crown Princess attended Barndiabetesfonden's (the Child Diabetes Foundation) 30th anniversary in Linköping.
In connection with the anniversary, the fund organized a conference in Linköping where specially invited researchers lectured on childhood diabetes. The Crown Princess opened the conference with a speech:
"Through the foundation, I have had the opportunity to follow the scientific advances in diabetes research.
It has been fascinating - but also frustrating. So many children are falling ill with diabetes. But we still don't know why. Nor do we know why incidence is so high right here in Sweden and Finland."
Award ceremony
After the speech, the Crown Princess awarded two prizes to prominent pediatric diabetes researchers in the Nordic countries and Sweden. This year's winners were Araz Rawshani and Per-Ola Carlsson.
During the conference, the Crown Princess took part in several lectures on what is believed to cause type 1 diabetes, and what it is like to live with the disease.
The Crown Princess has been a patron of the Child Diabetes Foundation since 1993.

Victoria said at her speech also
Barndiabetesfonden, the Child Diabetes Foundation, was one of the first organizations for which I accepted patronage. This was in 1993 and I was 16 years old. A few years earlier, a close friend of mine had been diagnosed with diabetes type 1.(...)
At the beginning of this school year, the foundation’s chairman and founder, professor Johnny Ludvigsson did an interview on a national TV morning show.
You, Johnny, spoke of the fact that three out of four children with diabetes have no help at school to handle their disease.
All on their own, these children are expected take responsibility for an extremely complicated treatment of a life-threatening illness. I can only imagine the worry that their parents must feel.
Ladies and gentlemen. We don’t know when we will be able to cure diabetes, or who will make that great break-through.
But what we can do, today, all of us, is to work against prejudice and ignorance about diabetes.
Ladies and gentlemen: I am proud to be a patron of Barndiabetesfonden, and I look forward to following the progress of diabetes research in the years to come.
