I don't understand what is the use from the Gala event with Mrs Murdoch.
seems like fan place where the rich ladies can spend their free time posing for glamour shots for social Magazines IMO:sad:

Queen Rania's NYC visit appears to be a success. It has been a pleasant surprise to see former Prime Minister Brown and Mrs. Brown attending the event. Despite all negative press, I like the couple. It would be nice, if Lalla Salma and Sheikha Mozah attended the event and promoted their causes.
Overall the events are an annual feel-good social gathering, which will help nobody in the end: many lofty word without real actions.

no offense but it sorta feels like she's losing her charm.maybe its just me or the criticizing(but probably truthful) comments but...

No offense, I think what it is is that people are tiring of hearing the same old things said over and over, year after year but no real action being taken. I think this trip to New York was not important except for personal publicity (that is just my opinion and I know some will disagree but hey, that is your perogative). This trip will have run into a cost of several million dollars, private jet costs, suites at luxury hotels, security, staff, accommodation and so on and I truly feel the money would have been better spent at home on the crumbling schools, on safe houses for women at risk, on the many poor people in Jordan or she and her husband could be issuing and taking an active stance against honour killing, sexual trafficking of women and trafficking of people to work in sweatshops that goes on in Jordan which is more important than talking about issues in vague terms. Queen Rania and her husband have REAL power to change these things INSIDE Jordan where their presence would be better put to use than talking in general terms about problems elsewhere that they can't solve and have no jurisdiction over. If you look at CGI etc past reports, the speeches and comments are almost identical year after year. Perhaps that is what people are tiring of. :ermm:
 
I would also like to add that if we are going to talk about education, that Queen Rania spends time and money educating the MEN in Jordan about the importance of sending their girls to school, not marrying them off against their will, thinking it is acceptable to beat women and getting rid of the archaic honour system that prevails which results in girls being killed in the most horrific way way by male members of their families through some perceived slight that can only be put right with the murder of the woman involved usually for petty reasons such as rumours or refusing a bridegroom. MEN need educating so the little girls are alive long enough to enjoy the benefits of their ABC's.
 
i was under the impression that rania had tried making honor killings illegal and/or implementing harsher punishments, but parliament ruled against her. perhaps she is frustrated trying to change things in a system that won't collaborate with her so she focuses on issues she can change, like increasing education

There is no real political will to change honor killings. Most people who commit these crimes get very light sentences, often serving no more than 6 months. ironically you would get a longer jail sentence for saying something bad about the king or queen. The change could have been implemented but it would upset too many people from the tribes on whom the Hashemites rely for their support. Queen Rania doesn't really talk about honor killings, not even in the Arab Press. She doesn't really talk about a lot of what she says to the West in the Arab press. Honour killings is the one crime they have consistently let fly, they might come out with the odd @honour killings is a very bad thing' sentence but NOTHING has been done to train the judiciary or police or educate the public and girls at risk have to be out in prison, even if they are victims of rape or incest, for their own safety. Remember King Abdullah is an absolute monarch and what he says goes, it isn't like other countries where the leader is called into question or can be defeated in the Senate. I don't say he and his wife can change things outside but they can within their own country and as I said there is the slave labour, women forced into the sex trade to survive and other things as well as honour killings that are never dealt with and I would rather see them at home tackling these abuses of human rights than sitting in the USA making speeches.

We should talk about this in another thread really so as not to derail this one but my comment about the work that needs to be done domestically before flying around the globe to talk about everyone else's problems is something I feel strongly about.

I would have to agree that this trip and much of QR's work is for publicity reasons.... I was fortunate to attend the WIE symposium and see QR there but she was only there in the morning for the press conference and to receive her award. Other than that, she didn't do much of anything...

I'm not basing my opinion just on this but the conference made me realize that there are many women doing wonderful work without the political clout, money, staff, private jets, and other resources that are far more deserving of our admiration that QR and KA's publicity parade.

Great to see Rania but a pity that Rania doesn't attend more events but only one event as Shalu mentioned. It would be nice to have a surprise visit or listen to speakers on different days.

So far, she has looked nice on this trip. Hope we do get a few pictures of her & King Abdullah enjoying some private time.

There have been some small but significant changes in the matter of honor crimes recently (of course, that is far from being enough!)

Of course, the legal changes are for now temporary (the government used the time the parliament is still dissolved). But it seems that even before the time when honor killers got only six months in prison was over, since in July 2009, a specialised tribunal was designated to try such cases.

It is great that she has come and tries to bring attention to her causes. Her visit appears to be relatively low-profile though.
