King Albert surrounded by grandkids for his 70th

4 JUNE 2004

Though King Albert II of Belgium will celebrate his 70th birthday on June 6 with a ceremony in the Place des Palais in Brussels, photos taken in honour of the landmark occasion portray the king where he seems to be happiest – surrounded by his growing family.

The Belgian royals gathered at the palace of Laken for the shots, which show the monarch with his wife and eight grandchildren, who range in age from four months to 18 years.

The latest addition to the family is Princess Louise, who was born in February 2004 to Prince Laurent and his British-born wife Princess Claire. Prince Amedeo, the eldest offspring of Princess Astrid and her husband, Archduke Lorenz of Austria, was the king's first grandchild, born in 1986.

It has been a baby boom of sorts for the royal family in recent years, with four new grandchildren – Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, Princess Laetitia Maria and Princess Louise – all making their debuts since 2001.

Oh it's really nice to see how the youngest grandchildren are looking now. It was a long time that I saw photos of Gabriel. Louise is a cute baby and Elisabeth is really looking like Mathilde. She's really becoming a handsome girl.
Happy Birtday for King Albert of Belgium ;) He 's now 70 years old . But I think he's a great king . The Belgium people love him because he is very social . And he has a beautiful family and very cute grandchildren . He mast be a very luckey man ! B)
On the first pic, Joachim has the same attitude than a "basic teenager".
What adorable photos, thanks for posting them! I loved little Elisabeth with her hair in the headband - so cute. She is really starting to look like Mathilde. Louise is also adorable, as is Letiticia (sp?) Funny how she has dark hair while all of her siblings with the exception of Amedeo are all blondes. The photos of Paola with her arms around Albert are so sweet as well.

I also love the one where it kind of looks like Gabriel is pulling Elisabeth's hair.

My goodness, Philippe looks like him. No one can ever deny that those two aren't father and son.

3rd September 2004.The king & queen payed a visit to the city Hasselt. They were received at the townhall, and then met the people of the city at the "Groenplein". Then the king went to the newspaper "Het belang van Limburg" that celebrated its 125 anniversary. The queen first went to the fashion museum and afterwards to "Boelvaar", a home for elderly people, after that she joined Albert at the redaction of the paper for an official reception.

Very striking portraits of the King.

Were they taken for a particular reason? To comemmorate his recent milestone birthday or something?
