Why was the Royal Wedding not a happy wedding?

Does anyone know how the couple met or why they were comparatively older for a first marriage? Were Aimone or Irene attached to others prior to their marriage?

Wasn’t Irene engaged in 1927 to a nephew of Christian X of Denmark? I think King George of Greece announced the engagement then nothing more was heard about it.

No, that was Olga of Greece. She later married Paul of Yugoslavia.

I thought my memory must be playing tricks when I woke up today, though I’d read about this Princess Irene (not Marina’s sister Woolly) about three years ago!

This is from today’s Wikki referring to the Irene of Greece and Denmark above and a nephew of King Christian.

‘In 1927, her brother, George, announced her engagement to Prince Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe, a nephew of Christian X of Denmark,[1]but no marriage occurred.’

Out of topic but funny in 1927 after Prince Christian of Schaumberg Lippe did not marry Princess Irene , he was a candidate for Princess Juliana , but has been rejected because he was a womenizer.
He married Princess Feodora of Denmark.......

I had no idea Irene was engaged before marrying Aimone. I wonder what happened?

I don’t know, but if word was getting around later that Prince Christian liked the females a bit too much, as Maria-Olivia has posted, then that might also have been true in the mid 1920s. If gossip reached King George of Greece then he might have put his foot down and ended his sister’s engagement.

It’s still a bit strange imo though that Irene didn’t seem to have any other suitors of note until she became engaged to Prince Aimone over a decade later.

Indeed, he had a terrible reputation. Prof. Fasseur mentions him in his WIlhelmina biographies and he is discarded as a candidate for Juliana due to his womanizing.
