Anne was born in Windsor. Her father was Edward Hyde, a commoner. Edward came from a family of lawyers, and after the death of his elder brother, became a lawyer himself. His Uncles were Lord chief justice Nicholas Hyde and Lawrence Hyde who was chief counselor to Anne of Denmark. Her mother was Edward's second wife Frances Aylesbury (his first wife died of smallpox several months into their marriage). Her mother was the daughter of Sir Thomas Aylesbury, 1st Baronet. She was the eldest of six children, five of whom made it to adulthood. Her father would be made 1st Earl Clarendon in 1661, and while her brother Henry succeeded their father, her brother Lawrence would be made the Earl of Rochester.
She was born at Cranbourne Lodge.

Her father was an advisor to Charles I. When the royal family went into exile, her family went into exile in the Netherlands. Mary, Princess of Orange named Anne one of her maids of honor. This was in opposition to her mother as Henrietta Maria did not like Edward Hyde.
Anne was quickly a favorite. She was beautiful and fashionable. She was originally involved with Henry Jermyn but then she met James, Duke of York. The two of them fell in love but there was great opposition. Her own father was one, he confined her to her rooms. James and Anne found support though in his brother. Charles believed that Anne was a good influence on his brother.
After Charles was restored to the throne in 1660 the couple were allowed to wed. Anne was already visibly pregnant at the time. They were married September 3 in a private ceremony in London. Anne was 23 and James was almost 27. They were married at Worcester House, her father's house on the Strand, married by James' chaplain. The stigma of her low birth remained.
Anne was never popular at court but she was well liked by Charles. Though she was jealous of her husband's lovers, her and James were well known for public shows of their love.
Anne converted to Catholic shortly before her death. And while her husband converted after her death, she was a major impact on him doing so.
Anne never recovered from the birth of her youngest. She had been ill for some years. She died from breast cancer March 31, 1671 at the age of 34. Three of her children would die before the end of the year including her only son.
She was buried in the vault of Mary, Queen of Scots in Westminster abbey.
Her husband remarried 2 years later. This time he married Mary of Modena, a daughter of the Duke of Modena. Her husband came to the throne 14 years after her death but he was deposed 3 years later. James would die in 1701, 30 years after her death.
The couple had 8 children but only 2 reached adulthood. They had no grandchildren together (his only grandchildren came from Mary's son James).
-Charles: born 2 months after his parents were married. He died from small pox when he was seven months old.
-Mary: succeeded the throne as Mary II with her husband, after the Glorious revolution in 1688. Married William III, Prince of Orange. Her husband ruled after her death until his own. William was then succeeded by her sister.
-James: died of the bubonic plague at age four
-Anne: succeeded William as Queen Anne. She married Prince George of Denmark, a son of Frederick III. The couple had 17 pregnancies, but 12 ended in miscarriage and 2 died at birth. The longest living was a son who died at 11. She was succeeded by George I, a grandson of Elizabeth Stuart, James' aunt.
-Edgar: died just short of his 4th birthday, the same year his mother died.
-Henrietta: died in infancy
-Catherine: born a month before her mother died, she died at 9 months old.
