Christmas Customs of the Habsburgs

With Christmas approaching, I was wondering about the Christmas customs of the Habsburg family. Do all of Otto and Regina's children join them at their home in Bavaria? If so, how in the world do they find room for them all!!?

The name of Archduchess Paola's father was indeed Laszlo, but I don't know if he and the politician-journalist in the 1930-40's you refers to are the same person; Paola was born in 1971, and the Journalist-politician should have been at least 60 years old at the time; quite old to be her father, but it's not impossible.

Current Relations Between the Habsburgs and the Austrian Government

On the thread about the death of Archduchess Regina someone said that it was sad that the President of Austria had not (yet) released a statement of condolence. I know that the Austrian Republic has not treated the Habsuburgs very well (it did depose them!), but from hearing of various events over the years where Otto was received at the Hofburg by the Austrian President I assumed that some sort of cordial if not friendly relationship had been established. Is this not correct?

At the requiem in Pöcking there were funeral wreaths from different politicans and officials, like the President of Georgia. (Archduchess Gabriela is now Georgian Ambassador to Germany). But non from Austrian politicians...

No, there is no cordial or friendly relationship.

Till this day, many of the Austrians think, that the Habsburgs were monsters, reigning as dictators, stealing money and possessions from the people. They think, that democracy started in Austria 1918, with the end of the monarchy.

They think: monarchy=dictatorship
republic=democracy

Some socialist politicians almost freak out, when they hear the name.

If a public person, like a school director uses the "von" in the name of the Habsburgs or addresses thema "imperial highness" there could be easily a court case for them....

There all kind of unhistorical rumors about the Habsburgs (emperors) in general and especially about Emperor Charles (womanizer, drunkard, a wimp, ruled by Zita,...), Empress Zita (traitress, italian, enemy, dominated Charles,...), Archduke Otto (right wing politician, antisemite, ...), Archduke Karl (donations fraud, a little bit crazy because of Habsburg-incest,...). MANY people believe these things to be true. It has gotten a little bit better over the last couple years. Some even say the Habsburgs are Nazis.

When Otto was allowed to enter Austria in the 60ies, 250,000 workes demonstrated against him.

All of the above, because history books in schools are full of lies and history teachers also telling them. Many people hate they Habsburgs and aristocracy because of the untrue propaganda of the socialists and communists for decades...

All that is very sad.

But there is also a growing number of monarchists and people who honor the Habsburgs...

Empress Zita (traitress, italian, enemy, dominated Charles,...)

I've always thought thay this is funny, since Zita the Italian traitress considered herself much more French then Italian; and also Otto once talking about his links to France referred to his mother and her family as French.
This is only because she was born in Italy, her father was the Duke of Parma and because Italy in 1915 entered in the World War I against Austria despite of the Triple Alliance.

It's interesting how people's feelings and perceptions regarding the Habsburg's are still so negative. It's almost as if they're are still brainwashed from the First World War and it's the twenty-first century. I'm sure that since they were the ruling Monarchy, it was easy to make the family scapegoats for the country's hard times after the War. It's very sad that this family still bears the stigma. Members of the former imperial Habsburg family are fighting to win the right to be elected Austrian president, by ending a constitutional ban of such nominations, they confirmed Wednesday. "That is a human rights violation of the worst kind," Ulrich Habsburg-Lothringen told the German Press Agency dpa. The 68-year old agricultural expert and his daughter-in-law have filed their case with the Constitutional Court in early September and hope for a decision before next year's presidential polls.

Austria's constitution states that for presidential elections, "members of ruling families or families that ruled in the past are excluded from being eligible."Habsburg-Lothringen said he was "definitely" interested in running for Austria's head of state, but that he was also working in the interest of other members of his family.

Habsburg-Lothringen serves as a councilman for the Green party in the town of Wolfsberg in Austria's south. He is a third-degree nephew of Otto von Habsburg, the son of the last emperor Charles. The lawyer who represents the two Habsburgs said that the Constitutional Court has the power to strike the words "or families that ruled in the past" from the constitution, if it finds that they conflict with democratic principles.

The daughter of the deceased baron was referring to the hostile treatment with which the Habsburgs have been punished for 92 years. A Constitutional Law in effect since 1919 does not allow any member of the Habsburg family to occupy the office of President of the Republic since the last Imperial couple, Karl and Zita, refused to recognize the Republic in 1918. Fed up with so much discrimination, two months before the election Ulrich Habsburg, a member of one of the family's branches and Green Party counselor for Wolfsberg (Carinthia), has insisted on standing for the election. His political bravery has unleashed a national debate.

Austrians should forget and forgive (although I'm not persuaded Habsburgs have so many things to be forgiven for).

yes i agree 100 %. it is always better to forgive and adove all to be reconciled where possible. however i have reason to believe that there are many members of the family amongst the collateral branches who are quite welcome in Austria, some of which have homes there ( isnt the kaiservilla owned by a descendant of Emperor Franz Joseph) and another branch settled in the village St Gilgen.....etc

i too tend to think, despite of any possiable ill feeling towards the habsburgs, Austria has a lot to grateful towards the Habsburg family, esp the last Emperor Karl. for it is said that his legacy in the long term, may had prevented Austria from becoming a satellite of Soviet Russia after the second world war.......

Yes, the Kaiservilla is owned by Archduke Markus Salvator, the 12th child of Archduke Hubertus Salvator, himself son of Archduchess Maria Valeria, daughter of Franz Josef.

About Austria prevented from becoming a satellite of the USSR, we can't forgot the hard work done by Empress Zita and all his children (in USA, UK, Portugal, Canada, Hungary) during World War II; in particular, Otto and Zita were friends of President Roosevelt and Robert met several times Churchill; their aim was, during and after the war, to help Austria and Hungary to be free and indipendent from the USSR, and possibly again a Monarchy under Otto. They want to create a Danubian Monarcy, with most of the lands of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.

yes i quite agree with you. it does very much appears that this spanish newspaper (El Mungo) has picked up on an austrian article published some months ago and added their own twist to the story....esp inregards Eleonore's use of her mother's maiden name ! ....

Some time ago I read something about Ulrich Habsburg-Lothringen. He's a Austrian poltician who wanted to become president of Austria but wasn't allowed because he is part of the former ruling family. He wanted to take the case to the court and if I remember correctly even politicians of other partys supported it - does someone know what happend to the case?

Family History Help

I'm doing my family tree and have run into a road block. I was reading a biography written by my great great aunt in it she mentions a crowned prince of Austria that gave up his title and crown to marry a kitchen maid. I'm looking for his name, I have a possible time line of the late 1700s to the early to mid 1800s that he was most likely alive. His great great grandsons name was Frank Pitrof but the family name was once Petrovich. Any help is appreciated.

Ulrich von Haburg-Lotharingen is a descendant of Grand Duke Fernando IV of Tuscany. But as Ulrich's grandfather married morganatically he is not an archduke but a count of Habsburg-Lotharingen.

It is time to abolish the 'no Hasburg' rule IMHO. It served its purpose as Austria is a stable republic now and any possibility that Austria will become a monarchy is long gone.
