The lam is because of his nature, and not because he was lame.

Abdicated shortly before his death, to enter a monestary. The only Danish King to have abdicated.

As a widow, Luitgard became the second wife of the widowed Count Herman II of Winzenburg-Northeim in 1148.

Erik III is indeed the only Danish king to abdicate and that was because he after an accident or illness became lame to at least some extent. Certainly enough for him to be unable to perform his duties as king, which back then meant that he had to be mobile.
There was no capital in the (then much larger) Danish realm, so the king and as such the government and state administration was constantly on the move.

He certainly did not look anything like the person depicted in the official painting!

This mans hairstyle and beard was fashionable in the 1600's. The armor is at least from the late 1300's onwards.

Prince Erik of Denmark was a grandson of King Christian IX by his youngest son Valdemar. He (and two of his brothers who also married unequally) gave up their "of Denmark" but became for example Prince Erik, Count of Rosenborg, and their wives were known as Princess Erik, Countess of Rosenborg (see the Danish state calendar).

Erik's father Valdemar was a younger brother of Queen Alexandra of the UK and King Frederick VIII. He was first cousins of Christian X who was Margrethe's paternal grandfather (making him Margrethe's first cousin twice removed). Erik was the older brother of Princess Margaret of Bourbon-Parma, the mother of the late Queen Anne of Romania. Another brother Axel married princess Margaretha of Sweden, the sister of Queen Astrid of Belgium and Crown princess Martha of Norway.

Thank you so very much for your information. Apparently Princess Erik went off to live in Copenhagen, divorced her prince in 1937 and married his secretary Here is a story that needs further investigation!

Her secretary, and yes she married him days after her divorce was finalized. She died six years later. They lived at her estate in Denmark.

In 1146 Eric abdicated for unknown reasons, the only Danish monarch in history to do so until Margrethe II in 2024. He entered St. Canute's Abbey, where he died on 27 August 1146 and was buried at the cloister. His abdication has been explained as being rooted either in his realization of his inability to govern, or an illness which ultimately killed him.
