Interesting that they relate the abdication to the arab spring in the article posted by dazzling. Like Queen Beatrix in January, the emir mentioned that it was time for a new generation to take over.

Was there a special ceremony for the abdication?

For the sake of us royalty watchers I hope that we will still see sheikha Mozah out & about though.

Thank you ,Imamonarchist for the Wiki link. I guess in retrospect an abdication is not all that unusual for Qatar. I'm guessing there are a variety of factors involved in the Emir's decision. And I also can't see Sheikha Mozah fading away!

With all respect,but this is the most ridiculous statement I have read in the whole thread
People who have followed this power-couple know that they have a lot of respect for each other,they were/are doing a lot of great things for their country and they have seven children together.
They may not have a typical romantic marriage,but they have similar ideas and visions for Qatar. They both have their own spheres and roles to play-he is the politician and and Sheikha Mozah the humanitarian who cares most about education, art and children´s welfare.

If he was over thrown (which is not the case) then most likely he would go to exile.
