Queen Margrethe's 80th Birthday Celebrations: April 2020 {Cancelled}

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Does the drop in number for her abdication reflect the realisation that she is as sharp as a tack and has a stabilising and morale boosting effect following her Covid-19 Speech to the Nation?

Perhaps.

There was a lot of focus on M&F in the past couple of years, Frederik turning 50 and so on. But for several months now, we haven't seen so much to them, while we in contrast have seen a lot of (very positive) coverage of QMII - articles and docus. Not to mention her New Year speech that was deservedly praised and now her personal behavior and her speech in relation to Corona.
And as Somebody points out QMII is still sharp!

So I think that figure is more about the public believing M&F to be ready to take over and that QMII should allow them to take over, rather than a lack of confidence in QMII.

--------------

Now for the coverage.

The public service channels (you may be able to watch DR1 outside DK) will go crazy on Thursday! It will be non stop coverage from early morning to late evening - until every last duck in the municipal ponds have been interviewed or asked to sing a birthday song for QMII. And I'm only half kidding!
I have no idea what they will use all that time on, because AFAIK there will only very limited, if any, direct coverage of QMII and her family.
So I guess it will be documentary after documentary, interspersed with ordinary people being interviewed, and experts and hosts in the studio interviewing each other via monitors.
It will be horrible and comical at the same time!

- Reminds me of when President Clinton came in for a state visit. They had put reporters out everywhere, desperately trying to say something sensible.
One of them (Jes Dorph) stood at Copenhagen Airport and two hours before the President was even scheduled to land he stood and informed the amazed viewers:
"The President will fly in - on a plane - on Air Force One - and then he will land - on the runway - in Air Force One - he will fly in from that direction - or that direction - or another direction - and land - in Copenhagen airport - the President..."
- We got reports like that every five minutes for two hours! We who saw it will never forget it!
It'll be something similar on Thursday.

Lovely photos, thanks for sharing. I think Christian is a good mixture of both his parents.

How has Christian shot up and turned into a young man already?! Someone on Instagram said that Frederik looked rather emotional in the photos, and it does look like he wants to tear up a little!

And FYI from an interview in Berlingske listing QMII's favorite performances in the Royal theater,

»Hamlet« af William Shakespeare

"Something is rotten..." :whistling:

Come on! I know she has a terrific sense of humor but I can't be the only one this seems like a ludicrously bad joke to?

The photos are lovely. I notice QM is sitting in one, has her arms on both in another, and has her arm against the wall in the third. I'm wondering if she was having difficulty standing without support? How has she been doing?

I imagine Queen Margrethe is in awful pain sometimes, but in public anyway she almost always has a bright smile.
I love the photos with her son and grandson. CP Frederik looks very proud. And Christian is almost as tall as his father already! It only seems five minutes since he was a small boy!

She's looking very calm, gracious, attractive and elegant these days. I hope she does something very special for her 80th birthday which she so deserves.

Der Ring des Nibelungen is an opera cyclus, consisting of four loooooooooong operas (Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung). Does the Queen go to the opera as a private person to see all thes four operas (four hours each) ?

I like the pictures, made in different salons. The couleur locale adds to the photographs. I really dislike royal pictures made against an artificial decor. (Why use a studio background when you have the most impressive decors available?). Chapeau to the Queen for using her residences indeed.

Nope! To me too!

These are very good photos. They tell stories. I like them very much.

Never read too much in photo's, is my advice. It is a staged freeze of 0,00001 second. Remember the most fairytale, enchanting, romantic, Walt Disney-esque oooooh and aaaaah last portraits of Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra? Not so long thereafter the dream-couple annouced their separation...

The new pictures are a-ma-zing, but one can never read too much in it. The Queen smiles, so she is happy or has no pain! Is she? Or is it a regal façade? One never knows...

But it are the very best photo's I have seen in long time. The interiors are superb.

Thank you, Polyesco.

Here are the photos in high res:
I like this the first one. This is Her Majesty, friendly and kind, but nevertheless her Majesty!

What a beautiful setting. Crop it and you have a great wallpaper:

These photos were taken on 21st September 2019.

Not all four in a row, I trust!

Yeah, if I think about it: Of course you are right!

I mean, royals are trained their whole life to make a "Bella Figura" for the public eye. That is, why I always thought, they are very well prepared to be representatives of state and people.

But it seems, I forgot this here! Thank you for reminding me! But the photos are really extraordinary!

So many anecdotes come out about QMII that it's impossible to keep up.

But here is one from the actor, Preben Christensen (who BTW is married to Mary's hairdresser, Søren Hedelund) who for many years have made hilarious parodies of QMII. he doesn't nail her looks, but he nails her voice!
He has been doing that together with two others for 40 years now, when he isn't on stage acting that is.

Queen Ingrid had watched the show and went backstage with the performing trio. Here they had a smoke and Campari. And at one point Queen Ingrid asked Preben Christensen: "You are doing the one with my daughter, aren't You?" (That's always at the end of the show.)
Another member of the trio, Thomas Eye, whispered to Queen Ingrid's LiW: "Is that appropriate?" The LiW answered: "It's expected."

A while later QMII came to see the show and the trio wondered whether it would be appropriate to make a parody of QMII, but decided to go ahead.
QMII (both of them no doubt) got a standing ovation when leaving.
A couple of years later QMII went to see them again.
And this time she went backstage.

Preben Christensen had made a parody of her wearing huge braids and he says:
"The Queen has never commented it in any way, (whether she liked it or not) and she isn't obligated to do that either. But by coming to watch the show, she did indirectly.
As far as I know The Queen has never seen Ulf Pilgaard. (*)
I remember the Queen after the show was standing speaking to you two (nodding at his partners in the show). The she suddenly turned towards me and said: By the way there are always bows in the braids. And then she continued speaking with you. - Your Majesty, that shall be corrected by tomorrow.
She has so much dry wit."

Here is Preben Christensen aka Queen Margrethe:
It was actually this particular parody he made - now with bows.

(*) There are two who can nail QMII here in DK, the second, Ulf Pilgaard, has retired, but while he couldn't nail her voice he could nail her looks!

He got the Knights Cross and he was requested to dance with her, so she can't have been that displeased.

BTW, Ulf Pilgaard also made parodies of PH, making in particular our Marie cracking up. Because Ulf Pilgaard speaks with a "French accent" which must have sounded weird to her.

In the video at the top of the article QMII gave her Corona speech, and there is a mini-sculpture in the background of a pair of hands holding a heart.
PH had made that sculpture in a large version, but this miniature was made for QMII for her birthday in 2018. So she got it a couple of months after PH's death.

This is how QMII will celebrated tomorrow.

- And you can take part.
You can write a greeting to her here: Kongehuset | Kongehuset.dk
You can attach a photo, a scan of a handwritten note or a drawing.
- Some congratulations will be published later - with permission from the sender. (Tick the box on the second page.)

Tomorrow at noon there will be a national communal singing in honor of QMII, probably the birthday song and perhaps the national anthem.
That will be shown live from various places in the realm, and at the same time we will see QMII sitting in front of her TV watching people sing for her.

You can watch it too at this link: https://www.dr.dk/drtv/kanal/20875

Later it will be even better.
At 20.00, after a multitude of programs about QMII, there will be an hour of communal singing, it's a special of a popular program called Communal Singing - Apart.
Here we will again see QMII in front of the TV, while she will receive greetings from other royal houses and also from her grandchildren, using their phones or tablets.
That will last an hour.
- But don't worry the clips with greetings from friends and foreign royals are bound to surface elsewhere. So there will be plenty to do for our newsdiggers. ;)

I hope to be around to provide a running commentary from around 11.30 until some time after 12.00 and later from 20.00.

There is a tradition in Denmark to publish commemorative coins in connection with special events in the Royal House. On the occasion of H.M. Queen's 80th anniversary, the National Bank will publish a commemorative coin such as a 500 kroner silver coin and a 20-kroner coin for common circulation.

See the new and previous commemorative coins in this post.

So we got a balcony scene after all - sort of. ?
That song is by many considered our third unofficial national anthem.

That's sweet.

Okay, let's learn what they say:
Nikolai & Felix: "A big congratulations on your 80th birthday, farmor."
Henrik & Athena: "Dear farmor, a big congratulations on your birthday and we hope you will a very nice day."
Christian, Bella, Vincent and Josephine: "CONGATULATIONS!"

Okay, this will be the first of two posts that will updated throughout the day.

This will be a loooong list of trivia about QMII.
It's loosely based on this list of 80 items:
https://www.bt.dk/royale/80-ting-du-ikke-vidste-om-dronning-margrethe

The government and the Parliament have presented QMII with their birthday present: A restoring of her dessert-cutlery from 1874-77. After having been used for more than 100 years, it's a serious need of a loving hand!
The worth of this present is 420.000 DKK.

------------

QMII was the first monarch to visit Communist China (when it was still communist, now it's a one-party capitalist system) back in the 1970's.

QMII was twelve years old before she saw the first black skinned person in real life.

She weighed 3.300 gram at her birth.

She met Elvis Presley back in 1960 in Hollywood. - "I thought he was dreadful."

She graduated from high school in 1958 with an average that is comparable to the second highest grade today.

PH proposed on Sankt Hans Eve 1966 - a traditional bonfire-evening here in DK.

She went on high school at Amalienborg, the first of the three years as the only student. In the second year she was joined by Birgitta Hillingsø, who is the mother of Ellen Hillingsø, a close friend of M&F.

She has worn 20 different pair of glassed when giving her New Year speeches, starting in 1986.

PH and QMII were close to drowning on their honeymoon in Turkey in 1967. When under the aliases of Adam and Eva Mørk they were swept out by an undercurrent and had to swim for their lives.

This, almost universal bowl in Danish homes is named after princess Margrethe. It's great quality, lasts forever! https://samvirke.dk/sites/default/f.../migrated/ml/mlistevis.jpg.jpeg?itok=WO4pxcPD

QMII's first pets were two canaries named hr and fru = Mr and mrs. (Queen Ingrid was not fond of having pets.)

QMII learned to speak early and by age two she spoke fluently. She had a fondness for difficult words and learned the names of the flowers in her mother's flowerbed by heart.

Back in 1994, she underwent surgery for ovarian cancer.

-----------

More trivia later. It's lunchtime.

Resumed.

She has two artificial knees, having undergone her fifth surgery in 2007.

She has never considered stop smoking.

QMII is 182 cm. (Or at least was.)
Frederik is 183 cm.
Joachim is 188 cm.

QMII is #220 in line for the British throne.

When it's personal, QMII sometimes sign with Daisy, also in official letters. Like when she send her condolences to the King of Norway after the Brievik atrocity back in 2011.

She is a huge fan of Tolkiens book Lord of the Rings, which she has illustrated. (I understand Tolkien kept some of her illustrations in his office.)

Back in 1980 the unofficial royal anthem was published by the pop-group Shu-bi-dua - and it is still popular.

There are 2.456 people in DK with the name Margrethe, as per 2019.
And there are 250 named Daisy.

QMII has always avoided taking a walk when she is in the Norwegian mountains. She doesn't mind going uphill, but she isn't keen on going down hill. (And that is the most elegant way of saying I can't be bothered to walk, I have ever heard!)

Before meeting PH, QMII had never before been on a date.

QMII is a fan of the here in DK iconic series of films Olsen Banden - she loves the subtle humor.

When she turned 70 the comedian and magician, Rune Klan asked her to sign a piece of ham, that was used in his show. That piece of ham is now stored in an airtight box.

---------

Time for coffee, more trivia later.

Resumed.

QMII joined Danish Ornithological Society when she was eleven and stayed a member for fifteen years - so she must have had (has?) a keen interest in birds.

Her favorite bird is the raven. (Probably the mythology around that bird appeals to her as well. Odin's two ravens, Hugin and Munin flew around the world every day to inform the god what was going on.)

QMII has been seen to dose off during the PM's traditional speech at the opening of the Parliament. (On the other hand it's a tradition that the photographers try and catch the royals with facial expressions where they look bored out of their pants. A part of the fun. See this photo: https://bt.bmcdn.dk/media/cache/resolve/image_1240/image/141/1411312/23290716-.jpg )

QMII has always been fond of the color blue. That started when she as a child got a blue toilet seat.

In 1980 QMII was almost in the verge of starting a military confrontation with Sweden. On a flight by military plane to the island of Bornholm, two Swedish fighters went up and attempted to force QMII's plane to land as it was over Swedish territory. They were eventually informed that QMII was aboard. Someone screwed up. - The direct line from Copenhagen to Bornholm goes across southern Sweden.

QMII smokes Karelia - a very strong Greek cigarette. (I understand she doesn't smoke that brand anymore.)

QMII was an extra in the movie "The Wild Swans from 2009. Playing an old woman. (QMII was instrumental in the production of that movie.)

In an interview with a Swedisn newspaper recently, she said that she had indeed noticed Gretha Thunberg and the climate debate she was behind. QMII remarked:
"It really is a bit odd that you in a country like Sweden where the distances are so big, must be ashamed of flying. But you can't go by wheelbarrow from Malmö to Haparanda, if I may express it like that." (One end to the other.)

She stopped riding when she was 14-15 or so, when she developed a fear of horses, for no particular reason actually.

The in DK (especially among sailors) cult movie Martha from 1967, is QMII's favorite movie.

QMII hates min-golf. "I could actually think of nothing worse."

As a child she was afraid of the dark, cried easily and was afraid of skeletons. In fact she didn't even like movies that were just a little bit dramatic. It was only around 13-14 she could see such movies.

She has no TV in her living room at Fredensborg. If she wish to watch TV it's rolled into the living room. - (Well, that has changed as we saw today.)

Jungles are not QMII's cup of tea! So shen never went with PH to such places. She is not fond of insects and other crawlies!

When she turned 18, she was presented with a parrot by the then popular song trio, Nina and Frederik. She named the parrot Nina Frederiksen.

QMII has never said "no comments" to a journalist.

As a teen QMII was sent to an all-girl boarding school in England. But in order for her to meet the other sex, so dancing (presumably with boys from a boarding school) was arranged. but all that about flirting and what not completely went over her head, as QMII puts it.

When studying at Aarhus University QMII lived at the college there. And today her room, room 422 is called the Queen Room.

QMII has no cash on her. If she needs to pay for something her LiW takes care of it.

QMII is a huge fan of the Nightingales. They had a Christmas seires where they spoke a comical mix of Jutlandic dialect and English - Jutlish. And even today more than 20 years later she and her good friend Susanne Heering can goof together for hours speaking Jutlish.

Technology especially phones and computers are not QMII strong side! Nevertheless in 2016 she used Skype for the first time.

Her farmor's (Alexandrine) pet monkey Monkey chased a cleaning lady at Marselisborg manor. The ape didn't like people with false teeth.

QMII has kept the love letters from PH over 50 years of relationship.

- All these trivia are verifiable.

And I will end this by adding these photos:

The live coverage thread:

This will also be updated all through the day.

The live link:

In ten minutes there will be a nation-wide communal singing for QMII seen by her on TV.

-----------

A photo of QMII standing listening to her staff singing for her this morning.
https://images.scribblelive.com/2020/4/16/fa6d173d-31ae-484d-ac02-649cfce12834.jpg

---------

People are gathering outside their homes here in DK, also here in the village where we live, but I'll dedicate myself to cover it all here rather than taking part in the communal singing - and scare the local dogs...
People are warming up in various ways.

----------------

The guy behind the piano, will play and people in the homes and on the streets will sing. It will be the birthday song that will be song at 12.00 - all children know that by heart, so that's good.

----------

The clock in the tower of Copenhagen Townhall is de facto the National Clock. (Like Big Ben.)

--------------

There she is. In the couch, in front of the TV.
Singing in Greenland as well.

---------

Not least in the newly opened kindergartens and schools - with considerable distance between the children.

--------------

The next song is Solen er så rød, mor - The Sun is so red, mother - A beautiful song. Implying death and danger outside.

The song after that is one of the unofficial anthems, In Denmark I am Born.

------------

While waiting for the third of four songs, children are congratulating QMII.

--------------

The third song is In Denmark I am Born, by HC Andersen.

----------------

QMII is congratulated by the TV-host.
She responded: Than you for the song, it was a fantastic experience that went straight to the heart.

The songs have been selected by the viewers.

------------

The last song, is very appropriate for QMII, it's called paper-cutting (Artistic.)

--------------

The guy behind the piano leads the country in communal singing each Friday.
There are strong links to the Occupation 1940-45 where communal singing became very widespread indeed as a way to lift the spirit.

-----------------

QMII is standing in front of the doors at Fredensborg waving to people standing singing for her.

-----------

Even the Guardsmen presenting arms, maintain a distance.

----------------

And that was the end of communal singing for now.
It's now up to our newsdiggers to find clips and photos.

-----------------

I will return with running commentaries in 7½ hours, where there will be an hour of communal singing.

In the meantime there will be non-stop programs about QMII and her family, only interrupted by news.

----------------

Running commentaries resumed.

QMII will address the nation in six minutes.

And I'm delighted to learn that she will have a dinner tonight with her sons and daughters-in-law.
It does pose a small risk for QMII but you only turn 80 once.

It is indeed forbidden to congregate, also privately in numbers more of than 10 and even that is discouraged.
But as the society is slowly opening up I think the vast majority won't mind.

--------

PM Mette Frederiksen give QMII a weekly briefing. These days on the phone.
The PM told how QMII at the end of one such briefing asked whether the PM looks after herself. The PM responded that there probably wouldn't be time for that until after the crisis.
Then QMII said: "Well, but now it's aunt Queen who is speaking, and You must take good care of Yourself."
That warmed the heart of the PM.

Aunt Queen is QMII's name for herself when she is in a stern mood.

-----------

QMII has just given her speech and I dare say she will be praised to high heaven for that one!
Apart from thanking the people for her birthday celebration it was thoughtful, expressing hope and confidence and gratefulness to all. But also making it clear that we must not let our guard down yet!
She also expressed her sympathy for those who have been directly affected by this crisis - and who have lost people dear to them.

QMII was visibly delighted and said she would look back at this birthday as something very special.

I'm sure the speech will soon be availiable in English.

- I think this speech was a much needed moral-booster from a political neutral and deeply respected person.

-------------

The video-greetings from other royals was not QMII's idea, nor it it from her staff. They wouldn't presume to address foreign royals behind her back.
I noticed they were almost exclusively people who have a close relationship to M&F. The NRF and SRF goes without saying. The rest are people who have developed a personal relationship with M&F. So I'd say this is something M&F hare organized.

----------------------

In 40 minutes from now there will be an hour of communal sing-along in honor of QMII. Perhaps we will see more of her live?
And perhaps her sons and daughters-in-law as well. We may hope.

In times like this, especially when we are so isolated from friends and family, we need something to be together around. This peculiar celebration of QMII is IMO a much needed celebration, a much needed diversion, a much needed feeling of community.

---------------

In a recent docu about QMII being creative, she was seen embroidering flowers on an evening bag for our Marie, then she looked straight at the camera: "I hope this won't be shown until after Christmas."
She added she would make something similar for Mary, but that would be later, she couldn't focus on too many tasks at the same time.

Resumed.

The one hour sing along has started.
It's basically a nationwide karaoke.

-------------

A man told about when he was a member of the Tivoli Guard as a boy. At an event they played for among other QMII and when the stopped playing the file did an about turn and in the very short moment between the musing stopping and the audience clapping, he locked eyes with QMII who was sitting right in front of him. She leaned forward and said quietly: "How well You play."

---------------

The dude with the guitar has almost as long hair as me...

-------------

The four gentlemen are Sons of the Desert, they are extremely talented in their own right and PH was very fond of them. They naturally sing a Capella, something they also do routinely in their hilarious shows that are full of innuendos, sexual and otherwise.

The song the choir is singing under the arch was extremely popular during WWII. It was actually banned by the occupiers.

-----------------------

- I don't know how many of you actually follow this sing along.
I have often described Denmark and the Danes as a village or a tribe. I think this helps to illustrate the positive sides of tribal community.

The last song had been requested by Mary.

And with that the running commentary ends.

Wonderful wishes by the grandchildren.
I like the Danish model. A modern and relevant monarchy but keeping it all befitting the royal function.

This was such a masterclass in PR! Absolutely loved following along. The Danes truly know how to give a modern twist to the term "royal". I love how everyone called her Aunt Daisy. Happy Birthday to QM Margrethe!

If we will see tonight also videos from Frederik & Mary, Joachim & Marie and perhaps from Alexandra!

I have just seen the videos on Facebook and they are great! Very sweet that so many of the royals called her Aunt Daisy. Happy Birthday, Your Majesty! :flowers::flowers::flowers::flowers:
