She wasn't criticising Germans at all. She knows the difference between Germans and Nazis. Prince Philip's sisters were all married to Germans. And the "We'll meet again" sentiment could equally well have applied to ordinary people in wartime Germany, Italy or anywhere else, who were also separated from their loved ones.

It is not unusual for the Queen to make references to speeches or addresses she made years ago - one recent Christmas address referred to her first televised one (1956 I think).

What she has done is highlight the firm continuity of life under difficult circumstances and it staggered me to think she has been in the nation's life from beyond 1940!

The Queen looked beautiful and regal in her green dress - a calming, neutral colour. She used strong words of encouragement and assurance and indeed it was an emotional moment to watch.

I don't know, but I'm not in a good mood, so, this: She was comparing the struggle against the virus with the war efforts of World War 2. So, the virus is a threat like the Nazis.

WW2 was fought against the Nazis, which were German... I am German... Wait, What?

The patriotic friendlyness of Her Majesty the Queen this short after the Brexit might be no by accident... Call me crazy, but I have these associations!

Nobody I spoke to has taken anything about Nazis or Germany from the speech, they took the message re the difficulty of separation as experienced by people during the war.

This is a war we are fighting but we are all in it together, all countries together, sharing knowledge and experience.

Each to their own, sometimes we read into things differently, I know on the forum I have taken something out of context.
I wish you well.

She referenced wartime child evacuation because they were sent away from their families for their own safety. They were isolating. She then linked that experience to the present sadness that many have at not being able to be with their loved ones. She went on to talk about joining with all nations in the struggle against the virus.

It's obvious when you look at her previous visits to Germany that she enjoys going. And this is clearly reciprocated by the German people.:flowers:

I do not think she was comparing this to any situation other than one of difficulty. As the evacuation was. She is genetically largely German as is her husband. Her beloved grandmother: German. Her mother in law. German. I doubt very mu h she has any anti German sentiment.

On a slightly different note...HM's message was seen by 24million people in the UK (well 23.97million to be exact) overnight figures suggest. This would make it the second most watched programme/event thus year with the PM's message announcing the UK's lockdown was watched by 27million.

This figure does not include those who watched online or on catch up services.

That was a beautiful speech, and yes, what an incredible thing to have someone who can speak about her experience in the war. She is a link to what Benedict Anderson calls the “imagined communities” of UK peoples not only geographically but throughout history, especially current history. I know a lot of people, not UK or Commonwealth citizens who thought it was a fantastic speech. She is the UK’s biggest public diplomacy asset hands down.

Queen Mary and princess Alice German? How could we define the ethnicity of someone? It is the blood or the country? It is *jus sanguin is or Jus Soli?
The British royal family has changed her name during the WW1 in order to persuade their people that they were not German. How far behind can we go. For how many generations we can still be considered of still keeping our genes which remain stronger than our education and life?
Difficult to say.
But I couldn't believe that QEII after two WW can feel German

Not that it actually matters but that is a personal choice.

And both were despite of course diplomatic gypsy childhoods of their generations. In the same way the Queen Mother was Scottish.

The speech was pitch perfect and the entire family have been great through this. I sincerely hope we see more of Eugenie in the future.

Sorry if it's off topic but Queen Mary's paternal grandmother was from Transylvania & an ethnic Hungarian. The Queen Mother was mostly English by blood I think with quite a lot of Anglo-Irish thrown in.

HM QEII is a great queen, her almost uncanny ability to rise to just about every occasion is amazing.

This is the kind of voice of leadership that Britain...and the WORLD needs right now:ermm:

There was an interesting article about why she wore that particular broach. One of the reasons given was turquoise is thought to be healing.

On Maundy Thursday the Queen distributes specially-minted Maundy Money to pensioners from across the UK at an historic service.
This year she has sent it to 188 recipients instead, along with a letter in which she describes how it is one of her most rewarding duties as Sovereign

I think it is good of the Palace to share the letter sent out. A lot of people do not understand the concept of Maundy Thursday, and I think the letter clear demonstrates how HM views Maundy Thursday.

The Royal Family on YouTube uploaded an excerpt from the Maundy Thursday service too. It's nice that HM is still keeping in with the BRF's Easter traditions even if remotely.

What a marvelous thing to do and a very, very good reminder of the Queen's positive affirmations she's stressed to the people.

I think out of all the speeches and words pouring forth from presidents, monarchs, health professionals and the latest from Celebrity X, the Queen's message is the one that has most hit home with me and resonate with me.

Yeps... that speech was absolutely *THE* Queen's Speech!! ?

It is a very interesting explanation about the Maundy Money..

Queen Elizabeth's message is lovely. Sadly so many families are suffering loss.
It's terrible, just terrible to hear of the deaths.
Good friday is a time for reflection and to see the face of our steadfast, Christian Queen plastered above the city is a familiar face of hope.

That was lovely, I'm really glad HM did this. It's a little difficult to remember that Easter hasn't been cancelled right now as I'm away from my family and can't go to church or anything I would normally do. I like how she connected the messages to other faith's as well.

There seems to be a concerted effort to have the Queen and other senior members as "visible" as possible at this time.

I agree, last time she spoke as The Queen to the UK, the Commonwealth and the World. This time she spoke as the Head of the Church of England, to the world. The visual was perfect because it wasn't about her but our faith she spoke of.

She reached out to the faithful and reminded us that the Light overcame the darkness and reminded us that a church is it's people not it's buildings. At a time when life seems grim it allows us hope and without hope we are lost.

I’m Jewish, so obviously I don’t celebrate Easter (it’s actually Passover now), but even so, I think the Queen’s beautiful message of hope resonates ...

I love listening to HM - she has such a lovely, reassuring voice
