State Visit from the President of the United States: June 3-5, 2019

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
There is a difference between Eric Trump attending a State Dinner IN THE US as a guest of his father to being added onto the guest list in another country.

What the Trumps are doing would be the same as if the Queen brought along all four of her children & their spouses to the US on a State visit. Charles as the direct heir, maybe okay but not the rest.

The closest example I can remember is when King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia visited the UK in the 1980s. Infantas Elena and Cristina did not take part in the state dinner at Windsor or the welcome reception, but they attended the return event offered by King Juan Carlos for Queen Elizabeth.

I understand there will be a US return event on this state visit too and that Prince Charles will attend on behalf of the Queen. I believe it would be appropriate for the Trump children to be there, but not at the state dinner. Ivanka and Jared might be an exception because they are attending the state banquet as part of the US delegation.

I also agree with other posters who mentioned that it is strange to criticize Trump for bringing his adult children along, but give Obama a pass for bringing his underage daughters to meet the Queen and even ride on a state coach, when they had no role in the state visit and should have been left at home in America

You always manage to astonish me....
Being a "royal watcher" for many years and you don´t get the difference between a monarchial and a republican system..?!

All right, I explain it once more to you: A "Royal Family" is a group of noble people related to each other working together like a "firm" to represent their country, based on a hereditary system.
In a republic ONE person is elected for a limited time either only to represent or to represent and to govern. Other than in a monarchy his/ her office has nothing to do or affects his/ her family members, except the spouse or her stand-in in case of widowhood or divorce (apart from being, more or less, "public figures"). Get the picture?

I do not make that difference. I also have an objection of Máxima sitting next to the King when he addresses Parliament as she has nothing to do there. You will not see Mrs Trump or Madame Macron next to the President but rather on the tribune, where they belong.

For me a monarchy is a system in which the head of state is "delivered" by hereditary succession. But for the rest: this is 2019. In most monarchies you see the tendence to be more limiting.

But my point is: we can not blame the one head of state bringing his family along as the other head of state does exactly the same. I would like to say something negative about the Trumps, but we can hardly criticize them when a grandson of the head of state, or a second cousin, attends official functions during the same event.

No one can say what the majority of people in the UK think of Trump as there's never been a poll taken. You certainly won't see many people who like him reflected in the news programs though and those people tend to be very quiet, they don't tend to take to the streets in great numbers shouting their approval of him.

Actually there has been a poll.

Trump:
Favorable: 21%
Unfavorable: 67%

Obama:
Favorable: 72%
Unfavorable: 11%

I'm trying to find the YouGov link as I also saw the stats there. When I locate it, I will update this.

I don't recall the Obama girls meeting the Queen. I don't recall any of the Obamas riding in a carriage or coach.

Afternoon Tea at Clarence House with the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

DM is reporting Harry didn't stick around long for the lunch. He kept his distance from Trump and talked to Ivanka

I don't if it's true or DM wants to keep Nasty gate in the headlines.

What is the poor man supposed to do?

He is about three or four rungs down the royal ladder as is. So why shouldn't he leave before lunch?
He is supposed to mingle I imagine and he did give Ivanka Trump his attention.
So IMO Harry did nothing wrong or inappropriate. He just did his job as a royal who from a protocol point of view is some way from the top.
That he happens to be married to an American is irrelevant in regards to the formalities of a state visit.

.

The difference is location!! Apples and oranges.

The Queen can invite her family members (many of whom who are working members of the royal family) to attend a State dinner she is hosting in the UK. She would not/could not invite those same family member to attend a State dinner in the US hosted by the President.

So yes, we can criticize the adult Trump children for inviting themselves along to the UK. They are the guests, their father is not the host.

The visit itinerary/programs are done in advance and approved by HM. So I do not think that he would skip lunch if he was in the program to stay for lunch.

IMO, The daily fail just wants to create controversy to sell their product.

I saw Harry speaking with Ivanka while walking through the tour of memorabilia and gifts. I didn’t see the Cambridge’s at all.

Sky News Live Coverage: US State Banquet-

Well Eric Trump has arrived at BP;

I'm just, i'm baffled genuinely.

And a running commentary from POTUS;

London part of trip is going really well. The Queen and the entire Royal family have been fantastic. The relationship with the United Kingdom is very strong. Tremendous crowds of well wishers and people that love our Country. Haven’t seen any protests yet, but I’m sure the....

....Fake News will be working hard to find them. Great love all around. Also, big Trade Deal is possible once U.K. gets rid of the shackles. Already starting to talk!

The visit seems to be going very well so far......much better than this thread. I haven't had to put this many users on ignore just to get to factual reporting since Marklegate. Disappointing, really.

I don't recall the Obama girls meeting the Queen. I don't recall any of the Obamas riding in a carriage or coach.

Mrs Obama and the girls were on vacation and visited London in 2009. The girls were 10 and 8. They had a 3 hour tour of BP and got to meet the Queen. As part of the visit, QEII arranged for the girls to have a ride in a carriage on the grounds. Apparently, it was on Sasha's 8th birthday. Later, during some visit, President Obama publicly thanked the Queen for being so gracious to Michelle and the girls.

The State visit is being treated as a sightseeing opportunity, and the sight they are all determined to see is the Queen and the other members of the BRF. It's so crass. And embarrassing.

Well the royals look nice. That’s all I got.

The woman on Sky News is going off on one, unnecessarily I might add, and has literally just said that if politicians in the US need to work around the President she will work with them.

Whilst I find Trump and his entire clan crass, embarrassing and vulgar above all you have got to respect the office he holds and a UK Politician cannot go around saying these things!

*SIGH* I can't really offer a comment without giving away my true feelings. so I'll leave it at that. God Bless the Queen! :flowers:
