It is kind of a missed opportunity. Georgy has lived in Madrid and Brussels. He has travelled all around the world. His fiancée is Italian. Both are used to West-European standards and with everything gigantic Russia has to offer in vast natural resources, he could be a promising alternative, leading the way to a future alike the three former Soviet-occupied Baltic states, all three of them advanced welfare countries. Away from Putin's kleptomaniac nepotist oligarchy.
As long as Georgy is slaying crosses all the time and kissing icons and circling around bearded priests, he remains an irrelevance (and that is probably why Putin is completely okay with it).

Well, not so long ago all Soviet citizens had to pray to the spirit of of the scientifically known future incorporated into to the teachings of Marx and Lenin.
What a pleasant change now: The thingy with God - and they don't have to pray, they are free in their decisions.
The fun part is rather, that the the church back then abandoned the Romanovs by not excommunicating their enemies, the communists and freemasons. And then the church had to learn, that in Russia the Kremlin decides who is prayed to - and it was for long decades not God...

How is it possible that an intelligent gentleman and an intelligent lady, who both grew up in Western Europe, have experienced how Spain, Italy, Germany, the Benelux flourish, how modern technologies, sustainable energy, democratic freedoms or even the existence of budget Airlines are fast changing these societies seem stuck in stuffy mediaeval cross-slaying habits with gentlemen whom by nature oppose anything I mentioned, craving for nostalgic times when the Church was all-powerful and the Russians no more than serfs.
Georgy should be advocating modern arts, sustainable technologies, participation and equality, a democratic Russia looking forward and maybe to become an inapiration indeed. What is the inapiration of an uncharismatic dude kissing icons of "Workers of Miracles" from the Dark Ages while slaying crosses. Pfffff.

Well, the royals are often very conservative - as conservative as the idea of monarchy itself - and seemingly very devout Christians here in Europeland.
Might be rooted in the idea, that God itself was responsible for let them rule from their thrones...
But you are right with your point about modern and cool and fancy things: They should incorporate them more into their activities, especially since they are not longer on the throne and need more than the love of old Grandmas to return....

Well I suppose one answer would be that the Church is one of the only (or at least most visible) organisations interested in working with them. The Romanovs aren't exactly a big deal in Russia any more. We've seen the same thing in Serbia, Montenegro and Romania to a greater or lesser extent, even in France.
He could advocate for Russia to be cutting edge and more western at everything and most people would still take no notice of him. Except maybe Putin.
Whilst many don't there are still plenty of people in Western Europe who enjoy or believe in the more ritualistic aspects of Catholicism for example. And not just Christianity either. And there are many who nostalgically think they would wish for "simpler" times.
I don't see this as being unique to Russia or this couple.
Since until relatively recently Russia went through a long period of enforced atheism, and "no religion" seems to be at 15-20% on two different sources with RO at 70ish%, I don't think anyone is before forced to believe these priests "from the dark ages" if they don't want to.

Rebecca Bettarini, betrothed of Jorge Románov, gave an interview to the Vanitatis website where she spoke about the wedding.
