It is impossible to determine what has been happening behind the closed doors of Saudi palaces. King Salman has appointed his sons to be a state minister of energy and an ambassador to USA. So Prince Mohammed bin Salman's appointment is not surprising. It is rumoured that King Salman may abdicate in favour of the current Crown Prince, who is a bold reformer.

you are right you'll never know for sure what happening behind the closed doors, there is also a possibility that the new generation of princes had enough and want to take the lead from the old guards.

Saudi Arabia's Next King Moves to Secure Power By Confining Cousin to Palace
Quote:
The Saudi prince removed as second-in-line to the throne last week, Mohammed bin Nayef, has been confined to his palace in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, according to officials.
The move is reportedly a bid to ensure no challenge to his 31-year-old successor, the modernizing face of Saudi Arabia and son of ageing King Salman, Mohammed bin Salman, four former and current Saudi and U.S. officials told the New York Times. ...
The title in this article may indicate that the US expects Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to succeed his father.

Well, I doubt that anything will happen if then there is not very notable opposition in the royal family. Sauds are not stupid enough that they would begin infighting overy succession.
